Thessaly?

[name_m]Just[/name_m] wondering how people would pronounce this name? I love the nns [name_f]Tess[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessie[/name_f]/ [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] but I’m not keen on the usual longer names, but I think [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] is very sweet.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you think it is compatible with the names in my signature?

I would definitely pronounce the “th” (like in [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]), rather than treating it as a silent “h” (like in [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]). So like theh-sa-lee.

I say this because [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] is a Greek place name and the place is pronounced a certain way—so as a name, I would pronounce it like the place. See this video:

That said, given that the shortened version would be Thessa, I wouldn’t use [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] as a nickname for it (or the other versions). It’d be like using [name_m]Teo[/name_m] as a nickname for [name_f]Theodora[/name_f].

My mother’s name is [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], and I’ve always liked it. Honestly though I’ve only ever heard it as an actual name, rather than a nickname for a longer name. To me, [name_f]Tess[/name_f] and [name_f]Tessie[/name_f] would be nicknames for [name_f]Tessa[/name_f].

I thought it would be pronounced with a T sound ([name_f]TESS[/name_f]-uh-lee) and I got my husband to glance at it and he said it as THESS-uh-lee. I wouldn’t be surprised either way. I don’t know how well it would work in the real world but certainly it would be a perfectly usable middle name, and if you were mostly using it to get to [name_f]Tessa[/name_f]/[name_f]Tess[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessie[/name_f] anyway, sure, it would probably be easy enough to wear.

I do think it fits with the rest of the names in your sig - for example, [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], [name_f]Paloma[/name_f] and [name_f]Athena[/name_f] would work so well together!

Thanks for the replies! I think I actually prefer the [name_f]Tess[/name_f]-uh-lee pronunciation personally…do you think it would work?

I instinctively go for Thess-uh-lee based on the spelling. It’s a minor thing to correct people if you prefer [name_f]Tess[/name_f]-uh-lee though.

The word [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] is pronounced with the Th. It is a place in Greece. I’ve never heard it pronounced without the H before and I wouldn’t want to go around correcting people on the pronunciation if it were me. That said, I think you could still get [name_f]Tess[/name_f] out of it while pronouncing the name properly. I love the name [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] and I also like [name_f]Tesla[/name_f]. [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f] does go well with your names, IF you pronounce it correctly, as you have a lot of Greek names listed. But if you mispronounce it and have other Greek sibling names, that will sound silly to me.

I’ve always said Thess-a-lee

I say THESS-aly, no silent H. Super awesome name, looks good with your other sig names!

I’m a huge fan of [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f], it’s only my ‘names I’d use if I’m ever brave enough’ list, and I pronounce it thess-ah-lee.

I’m a believer that you can’t just change pronunciations to suit you, especially when it’s a place name, which has an official pronunciation.

You can still use [name_f]Tess[/name_f] as a nickname.

I love [name_f]Thessaly[/name_f]! There’s something springy and energetic that I really like about it, and I think it would fit perfectly with the names in your signature. It has an exotic Greek vibe similar to all the names in your sig. that really works! I say THEH-suh-lee. I like [name_f]Tess[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessie[/name_f]/[name_f]Tessa[/name_f] as nns too, and [name_f]Sally[/name_f]. Awesome name!

Thanks for the replies! After listening to a pronunciation video on YouTube I’m very much in love with the original pronunciation- which is good as it seems that’s how everyone says it!
