Thinking about Gaia – WDYT?

I love [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]!! It’s such an underrated mythology name.

It’s very evocative of the earth and of nature to me, like a spring breeze or bouquets of wildflowers, but it feels more grounded than similar flowery names. And I love it with [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], and [name_f]Anouk[/name_f], they all have the same unexpected, playful, yet still grounded vibe!

My name is [name_f]Gala[/name_f] (Gah-la)! Not exactly the same but similar vibe, the only thing I’d say is some people call me [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] occasionally and pronounce it wrong. Being called [name_u]Gay[/name_u]-a as a 7 year old was not my peak. It’s a hella cool name and I do love my name but just something to consider x

This is my biggest hesitation with it. I can look past the popularity of -aia/-aya personally, because of the long history behind this one, but I just wonder if it could sound a little boring/samey to some people.

So pretty  I’d definitely do a longer middle with [name_f]Gaia[/name_f], love the flow of this.

I love this description! This is exactly the vibe I look for in names, I’m glad you think [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] fits in well.

I think [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] is in theory a really cool spunky choice that has great mythological references and would definitely work as a sibling for [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u] & [name_f]Anouk[/name_f]. The reason why I’m not overly enthusiastic about [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] is that I think it has teasing potential with people pronouncing the name ‘gay a’ I can imagine idiotic 7 year olds having a field day with that one.

It has a pretty sound, but I prefer [name_f]Maia[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] goes very well with [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], and [name_f]Anouk[/name_f]!

Love love it.

I do think people might think it boring, also due to the popularity of [name_f]Maia[/name_f]/Maya. Like it sounds like it’s a popular name already.

It’s not really my style (the strong association with the mythology and the sounds aren’t my favorite), but I do see the appeal! I know you’re a fan of mythological connections, and this is a particularly regal and lovely one! I am also generally not a fan of “aia” names, which is just a personal preference. It has the strong, short, and offbeat appeal of your other kids’ names.

Overall, I think it’s intriguing and cool (though not for me). It goes excellently with the sibset!

Gaia is nice! I feel bad, because I wish I liked her more. I love me a good -aya/aia name ([name_f]Maya[/name_f]/Maia, [name_f]Amaya[/name_f], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], [name_f]Alaia[/name_f], etc., are all huge favorites), but maybe it’s because of the mythology tie that I’m just not keen? I am a bit weird about honoring someone from another religion, above my own? I know others don’t necessarily feel the same way, but it just doesn’t sit right with me. (I know [name_f]Maia[/name_f] is also Greek mythology, but I love the Hebrew roots with [name_f]Maya[/name_f].)

I think [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], [name_f]Anouk[/name_f], and [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] could definitely work, and I don’t hate it, but somehow with that -aia ending, it does seem a bit frillier than [name_f]Juno[/name_f] and [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]? I think something else might work a bit better, slightly, but if you love it, I don’t think it’s a bad match by any means? Sorry to be such a wet blanket lol.

Used to not like it at all, but I really do now! I think it goes well enough with your kids names

The only thing that bugs me is there’s a store around here with [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] in their names & they say it as ‘[name_f]Gia[/name_f]’ so so does everyone else around here & it drives me nuts lol. But I feel like the pronunciation is generally pretty straightforward due to [name_f]Maia[/name_f], [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], and [name_f]Amaia[/name_f]. I also don’t think pronunciation issues should necessarily be a contributing factor in not using a name.

Oh man, I really want to love this, but something’s holding me back! I think the G sound is just too harsh for my personal taste (which is usually very soft and girly).

It goes perfectly with your kids’ names imo!

I think you’re exactly right. I like [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] but I don’t quite love it, and it’s because I can’t get past the ‘guy’ sound. For that reason I prefer [name_f]Maya[/name_f] and [name_f]Kaia[/name_f]. There is something quite cool about [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] though and I can see it with your kids’ brilliant names!

I love [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]. It has such pleasing sounds; I love how the hard g balances out the more airy and familiar aia. It’s an interesting mix of spunky and elegant. And it’s lovely with [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u] and [name_f]Anouk[/name_f].

[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] is the name of [name_f]Emma[/name_f] [name_m]Thompson[/name_m]'s daughter, and that’s always given me the warm fuzzies.

I definitely see what you mean. This is a big hesitation with another favourite of mine, [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. They definitely feel more unambiguously feminine in terms of sound than my daughters’ names.

Yes, I love this too.

And this! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts: [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_u]Romilly[/name_u] is such a stunning combo.

[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] is definitely a name that deserves more love! I think the main thing holding it back is the potential for it to be (innocently) mispronounced as gay-uh, which is obviously not going to work these days. With the rising popularity of [name_f]Kaia[/name_f], I’d hope that helps people to intuitively get it right, but people can be a bit knuckle-headed with uncommon names no matter how many clues they have :weary:

Others have also indicated the teasing potential, but I think the chance of it being accidentally mispronounced in an unfortunate way is almost worse for some reason. Like, she could be in class and the teacher calls out on the roll call,

“[name_u]Gay[/name_u]-uh?”

and everyone giggles. She either has to answer to that name, or correct it verbally in front of her classmates. It’s an awkward situation to be in.

Despite that - I do like it. I appreciate the divine feminine/Mother [name_f]Earth[/name_f] association and I think it’s a very powerful and meaningful namesake for a girl. I wouldn’t use it for 3 reasons,

  • Mispronunciation concerns
  • I tend to gravitate towards longer names
  • When I do go for a shorter name I prefer a softer sound (like [name_f]Enya[/name_f] or [name_f]Lula[/name_f], for example)

That said, I’d be thrilled to see it getting some use elsewhere. I think it’s lovely with your sibset! The only thing I would say is that it seems less warm and androgynous than the rest of your kids’ names - it kind of has a more dark, feminine feeling to it. Still lovely though!

I’ve always liked [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]. It has a mystical, earth goddess vibe. I think it definitely works with your sibset. However, the “gay-uh” mispronunciation would concern me somewhat for reasons other posters have mentioned.

@katinka I think I should clarify that the [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] I know irl hasn’t had someone mispronounce it as gay-uh! Most people in my area seem to go with a soft g sound, like “jay-uh”.

I just wanted to offer my thoughts on the concerns around the gay-uh mispronounciation and potential teasing… I think we underestimate our young people by assuming they will think the word gay is something to tease about. Maybe in some places but definitely less so than previously. The world has come a long way since many of us here were in school and I find younger generations on the whole are a lot more progressive.

I actually taught a girl named [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] once. I think she spelled it Gaiya. Something about the sound doesn’t really appeal to me. She was a very sweet girl though. The personality vibe I get from the name is kind of jolly and naive.

I love [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]! It’s gorgeous, even though the “[name_m]Guy[/name_m]” part bothers me sometimes. I love [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] together due to their meanings “earth mother” and “queen of the heavens”, and the Goddesses

I adore [name_f]Gaia[/name_f]! I think it stands out from the more popular -aia/-aya names, and that makes me like it more. I don’t hate the strong ‘guy’ sound, and that’s a boyish nickname option for the child if they decide they want one at some point. [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] fits in so well with [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_u]Kit[/name_u], and [name_f]Anouk[/name_f]! Some combos just because I love playing around with this name:
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_f]Sabine[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_f]Jacinda[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] (too nature-y?)
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_f]Corinne[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_f]Lucille[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_u]Vivian[/name_u]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_f]Marielle[/name_f]
Plus I’ll second [name_f]Gaia[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] that was suggested earlier.
