Thinking about the future

Our son [name]Philip[/name] was literally just born so it will be at least two years before we have a third baby- but I can’t stop thinking about names! I’d love it if you would humor my hypothetical-at-the-moment questions!

My husband and I have both fallen hard for the nickname [name]Gus[/name]. It just sounds so handsome and preppy to us - exactly what we want in a name. But do we go with [name]Augustus[/name] or [name]August[/name]? We’re torn. [name]Augustus[/name] definitely seems stronger- but maybe a little too strong. [name]August[/name], on the other hand, seems softer (in a good way), but I’m worried it would be perceived as too hippy, nature-y because it’s a month name. Nothing wrong with that image- but it’s definitely not us. Also, is [name]August[/name] unisex?
Which sibset do you prefer?
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name], and [name]August[/name]. [name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Gus[/name].
or
[name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name], and [name]Augustus[/name]. [name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Gus[/name].

Switching genders, we love [name]Margaret[/name] for a girl. We had planned on using [name]Maggie[/name] as a nickname, but I’ve been loving [name]Maisie[/name] lately. Which do you prefer? What do you think of [name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Maisie[/name]?
Thank you!

Yes,[name]August[/name] is unisex and sound great with other two siblings.

[name]August[/name] is all male to me, but I know that there are people who would say it’s unisex. I say go with [name]Augustus[/name]. It has a similar feel to [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name].
[name]Margaret[/name] with the nickname [name]Maisie[/name] is adorable and is on the extended version of my short names list.

I love how [name]August[/name] sounds, but that’s because I’m a sucker for month names! But I feel that it is a unisex name. With the nickname [name]Gus[/name], though, it’s obviously a boy! Congrats on [name]Pip[/name] by the way! Enjoy!

I love [name]August[/name]! [name]Theodore[/name], [name]Philip[/name], and [name]August[/name] would be such a handsome trio. [name]Augustus[/name] is nice but just too much name next to the classic [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name], imo. [name]August[/name] nn [name]Gus[/name] is too cute.

I love [name]Margaret[/name]'s nicknames! [name]Maggie[/name] is undeniably sweet but I think the quirky [name]Maisie[/name] might work better with the more quirky [name]Teddy[/name] and [name]Pip[/name]! I’m torn, haha. I actually love [name]Margaret[/name], nn [name]Greta[/name], too, though–I think [name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Greta[/name] would be perfect! (Like I need to make this any more complicated, haha.)

Good luck! And congrats on little [name]Pip[/name] again!

I prefer [name]August[/name] to [name]Augustus[/name], which feels a bit overembellished to me - I think [name]Gus[/name] is a great nickname, and also love [name]Augie[/name].

[name]Maggie[/name] would be my preferred nickname for [name]Margaret[/name]. I like [name]Maisie[/name] in theory, but it’s just a little cutesy for me next to the more grounded [name]Maggie[/name].

Good luck

Have you considered [name]Augusten[/name]? It’s a bit of a middleground between [name]August[/name] and [name]Augustus[/name].

If it was me I would be naming him [name]Angus[/name] nn of [name]Gus[/name], it is a great name and works with [name]Teddy[/name] very well and I think a sister named [name]Maggie[/name] would fit the bill beautifully. (I don’t mind [name]Maisie[/name] I just like [name]Maggie[/name] more.)

[name]Angus[/name], [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Margaret[/name] nn’s [name]Gus[/name], [name]Teddy[/name] and [name]Maggie[/name]/[name]Maisie[/name]

rollo

I much prefer [name]August[/name] over [name]Augustus[/name], quite like the nn [name]Gus[/name] and [name]LOVE[/name] the nns [name]Maggie[/name] or [name]Maisie[/name] for [name]Margaret[/name]! Great sibset, either way!

[name]Gus[/name] & [name]Augustus[/name] remind me of old men!

Thanks for the feedback! I think we’re leaning towards [name]August[/name] - but we have plenty of time to decide. What do you think of the combo [name]August[/name] [name]Owen[/name]? Is it too “soft” sounding?

@ashthedreamer - [name]Greta[/name] is adorable! I think I’ll just have to have three daughters named [name]Margaret[/name] and call them [name]Maggie[/name], [name]Maisie[/name], and [name]Greta[/name]. Choosing is too hard!

@eskay- [name]Augusten[/name] is interesting. Something about it looks weird to me though.

@rollo - [name]Angus[/name] is a great name, but it’s not really our taste. Thanks though.

@mom9 - We clearly have very different taste. [name]Paisley[/name] reminds me of a pattern, but hey - to each their own. We love so called “old man names”.

Thank you!

I prefer [name]August[/name]. Not a fan of [name]Augustus[/name] because I think of [name]Willy[/name] Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and it also seems like a really serious name for a little boy. For those reasons I’d go with [name]August[/name]. [name]Love[/name] your sons names, by the way

I think [name]August[/name] is a good choice.

Depending on your accent, [name]August[/name] [name]Owen[/name] could sound a little like “a gust o’ wind”.

I don’t find [name]August[/name] nature-y, and it is definitely not unisex. All boy for me. I love [name]Augustus[/name] too. I don’t think you could go wrong with either one. [name]Gus[/name] is so much fun.

@strawberry shortcake - it’s been so long since I’ve seen that movie! I completely forgot that there was a character named [name]Augustus[/name]. But after a little Wikipedia research, I see that he’s described as “enormously fat”. Not the most attractive description, huh? But in the end, I don’t think that would be a deal breaker for us. And thanks!

@eskay - It could sound like “a gust of wind”? If you don’t mind me asking, where are you from? I can’t hear it at all in my Connecticut accent. I pronounce the A in [name]August[/name] more like “aw” than a long A sound, and the the -gust is even more like a “gist”. Also, while people around here are horrible about annunciating their Ts, they’re pretty good about pronouncing the f in of and similar words.

@shaymin2- [name]Glad[/name] you don’t think it’s too nature-y or unisex! Thanks for your feedback!

I have an [name]Augustus[/name] (NN [name]Gus[/name]), so I’m partial to that name, but [name]August[/name] is great too. If you’re concerned about [name]Augustus[/name] being too much name for a little boy, calling him [name]Gus[/name] solves that issue. We went with [name]Augustus[/name] over [name]August[/name] (also considered [name]Augustin[/name]) because we preferred the classical version and because our little one was born in [name]December[/name] (not that that really matters).

@lorijohnson - I’m glad you like [name]Teddy[/name], [name]Pip[/name], and [name]Gus[/name]! I think we’re pretty set on either [name]August[/name] or [name]Augustus[/name]. [name]Angus[/name] is a little too “cow” for us, and [name]Gustav[/name] is a little too Germanic sounding.

@lyricmom - [name]How[/name] has the reaction been to your son’s name? I completely agree that [name]Gus[/name] eliminates the “too much name” problem, and I do worry that any boy named [name]August[/name] would inevitably be asked “were your born in [name]August[/name]?” again and again. Not necessarily a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind.

I think we’re leaning towards [name]Augustus[/name]. [name]Theodore[/name] and [name]Philip[/name] have clearly masculine names, and the fact the [name]August[/name] is unisex bothers us a little. If this was for our first, it would matter as much. But given our boys’ names, I think [name]Augustus[/name] might be the better match.

[name]Just[/name] throwing around middle names, we thought of [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]. Thoughts?

Thank you all again for the help. Names have been a nice distraction from our sleep deprivation.

Maybe don’t worry about “a gust o’ wind”. I’m from the UK, and it’s the “-gust [name]Owen[/name]” part because [name]Owen[/name] is like o-win when I say it.

But also, growing up, there was an inordinate amount of wordplay in my family, so I’m probably hypersensitive to these things. My dad will twist everything he can, especially names. He’s merciless.

[name]Augustus[/name] [name]Quinn[/name] is the most gorgeous name! It has to be the one!

@eskay - Ok. I hear it now. Once I tried on my (admittedly terrible) British accent, I heard it right away. But that’s ok. We’re leaning towards [name]Augustus[/name], anyway. And I’m so glad you like [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]! Like I said, it’ll be a while before we have our third, but it would definitely be “the name” right now.

Anyone else have thoughts on [name]Augustus[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]?
