This main character is giving me a run for my money

[name]Hi[/name] everyone,

I’ve had a main character in mind for a long time, and after endless searching, I decided on the name [name]Leeza[/name] Pope for her. And yet, it still just doesn’t feel right! I would love some help.

So, for a brief synopsis, the character (we’ll just call her she) has just recently lost both her parents and her brother in a fire, which causes her to battle PTSD, especially in the beginning of the book. The fire was originally of an unknown origin, but it is revealed at the end of the book. The book takes place at a boarding school in [name]Maine[/name], and it is soon revealed that she has special powers, which is why she was chosen for the school. [name]Long[/name] story short, it turns into an adventure of sorts, which sounds much cornier than it actually is, I swear.

The character is a true friend (a major theme of the book) that is loyal to the core, and her inability to trust others is linked to the fact that she is only close to a select few. She is excessively calm, almost stoic, at the face of adversity, and her determination and academic brilliance allow her to push through conflicts in a calm, realistic manner. The character’s biggest downfall is her quiet, introspective nature, as she tends to bottle her emotions until they come out in negative ways. Additionally, she is fairly judgemental, but she is often accurate in her judgements, which reinforce her behavior. However, she sees the world in shades of grey, and is very accepting and empathetic towards others.

So, the names I’ve been tossing around include:
[name]Sheridan[/name]
[name]Adina[/name]
[name]Eliza[/name] or just [name]Liza[/name]
[name]Alina[/name]
[name]Liv[/name]

…all preferrably using the surname, Pope.

I’d like if a name can be shortened in some way, such as [name]Sherry[/name] for [name]Sheridan[/name] or [name]Lee[/name] for [name]Alina[/name]. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sorry this was so long!

Thank-you!

Wow, I forgot to mention that the character is fifteen, about 5’2, and has long curly chocolate brown hair. Aside from her gorgeous hair, she’s fairly pretty but plain-looking. She has small facial features, hazel eyes, and is slightly curvy.

I like [name]Alina[/name] Pope…it sorta sounds like her, to me anyways.

I gotta love [name]Liv[/name]! Short for [name]Olivia[/name]. Also, [name]Cassidy[/name] nn [name]Cass[/name]/[name]Cassie[/name]. Or [name]Miranda[/name].

Thanks guys! [name]Alina[/name] has been growing on me lately, maybe I’ll stick with that… I love [name]Liv[/name] as well, but my only problem is it that I don’t like the combination of [name]Liv[/name] Pope. It sounds to preach-y, if you know what I mean! Maybe a last name change, then? If anyone has last name suggestions as well, that’d be awesome.

Thanks again

I adore the name [name]Liv[/name] for a character (mostly because it’s the name of my main character for a book I’m currently writing). I agree that [name]Liv[/name] Pope does a sound a little bit strange. Here are some of the other last names that I was tossing around for my [name]Liv[/name]…

[name]Maxwell[/name]
[name]Bingham[/name]
[name]Samson[/name]
Andrews
McCall
[name]Donahue[/name]

Also, I really liked the idea of [name]Cassidy[/name] nn [name]Cass[/name]/[name]Cassie[/name] for the main character. I almost chose this for the name of someone in my book too but chose something else. It definitely fits your character though!
Good luck!

I’m thinking at this point that I’m going to go with [name]Alina[/name] Pope… It’s been growing on me a lot. I like that it’s unique and that it has strength and femininity simultaneously. (I like [name]Cassidy[/name] as well, but the MC’s best friend’s name is [name]Charlie[/name], and I think [name]Cassie[/name] and [name]Charlie[/name] would be too confusing.) Thanks so much everyone. Let me know if you have any other ideas!
