This or that girl trio + merits/demerits

What do you think of these sibsets of three? What works and doesn’t work for each? What do you see as the common threads that tie each set together and what leaves them unfinished? Which would you be more apt to use?

[name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elin[/name_f], “[name_f]Hildie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] [name_u]Jule[/name_u], “[name_f]Roz[/name_f]”

OR

[name_f]Chrysanth3mum[/name_f] [name_f]Helen[/name_f], “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]”
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] Carnelian or [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], “[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]”
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], “[name_f]Frances[/name_f]”

[REVISED with new combo possibility ]
OR

Chrysanthemum H3len, “Xanthe”
Wilhelmina Pearl, “Winnie”
Frances Hermione, “Frances”

The first, but I’d prefer “[name_f]Tillie[/name_f]” “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]” and “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]” personally

I think the first sibset works really well. The longer first names, balanced by the short and sweet middle names, just feel like they go together, while still maintaining their own identities. Overall the sibset feels classic and elegant. In the second sibset, [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] (though I think it’s a cool name!) is a pretty adventurous choice in comparison to the more old-fashioned [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f], so it doesn’t work as well to me.

I love the first set and would absolutely use it, or something close.

I feel like I’d prefer [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Helen[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. I also really love the name [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. So cute together!

I’ll go for the second, however I prefer a mixture: I love [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], and [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. Also like [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]. I don’t mind [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], but dislike [name_f]Roz[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Rosy[/name_f] or [name_u]Romy[/name_u] or just [name_f]Rose[/name_f] for [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f]. [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] nn [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] is really interesting and I quite like it.

The first. I reallu like [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] [name_f]Helen[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], but next to the two of them, [name_f]Frances[/name_f] seems a bit too ordinary. I’d make [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] the first name in that case… although with sister [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], my potterhead brain can’t neglect the connection. :stuck_out_tongue:

[name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] sound great together.

I like the names in the first, and I think they go well together, but I prefer the unusual quality of the second set. I really like the idea of Chrysnathemum, but I prefer Chrysanthe (or just [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]) with the rest of the set. I also agree with @luneth, that [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] would probably work better as a first than [name_f]Frances[/name_f], in terms of the sibset, but then there’s the strong HP vibe (although I don’t think I’d personally mind that). I think I’d go for the second set, but Chrysanthe/[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] would be really awesome!

Thanks all.

The [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is because my husband really really wants a little girl named [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (he imagines the illustrated badger), and he doesn’t like [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] as a first name. It honors the same [name_m]Herman[/name_m] and [name_f]Frida[/name_f] that [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] nods to with his initials, which is why I would keep it in the third spot because if I had two little girls, I would still be holding out some hope that we would have our [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m] and wouldn’t want to double up on the same initials (albeit in reverse) for two babes and not the other (we are set on three total). I think [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is just such a sweet combo, but I agree that [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] makes more sense stylistically with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]. I would be hesitant to put [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] together just because of the grandiloquence of the association that speaks so loudly to those familiar with the potterverse.

I’m glad to hear that some think I can still use [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elin[/name_f] and [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] with [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] though.

This post really comes down to my fear that my first choice for a girl will stylistically box me in to certain choices for subsequent girls and boys (because [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] is so bold and I wouldn’t consider it for a sister to [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] – especially if her sisters aren’t born in [name_f]Autumn[/name_f], and if this first babe is a girl, it’s very possible that her Chinese name will incorporate the character for [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] even if she is [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], so that pushes it even further from the realm of possibility of me using for a subsequent daughter), so it feels like it’s now or never and I have this huge decision before me to go for the bold or not.

At this particular moment, I’m in love with [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elin[/name_f], my [name_f]Hildie[/name_f]. But my feelings change all the time and they are so fickle compared to my ever-undying faith in my constant love for [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] [name_m]Felix[/name_m]. By comparison, everything seems to come up shy of perfect.

Sigh.

I agree with pretty much everything @myosotis and @luneth said—I’d pick the second set because it’s more interesting [name_f]IMO[/name_f], but [name_f]Frances[/name_f] does feel a bit off with the other two. I think [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] or [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] would also be a good third name with [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] (I normally wouldn’t go for [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] in the same set, but since you’re using [name_f]Hildie[/name_f], I think they’re different enough to be sisters.) I also think [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] would be fine as sisters, especially with potential brother [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] to sort of bridge the distance of vintage and quirky.

[name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elin[/name_f], “[name_f]Hildie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] [name_u]Jule[/name_u], “[name_f]Roz[/name_f]”

My only complaint for this one is that [name_u]Jule[/name_u] seems a bit unfinished, and my brain wants to autocorrect it to [name_u]Jules[/name_u]. Otherwise, I like how old-fashioned and buttoned up this sibset sounds.

[name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] [name_f]Helen[/name_f], “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]”
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f] Carnelian or [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], “[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]”
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], “[name_f]Frances[/name_f]”

I’d switch [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] into the first position, since the other two first names have Greek mythological ties ([name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] & [name_f]Minerva[/name_f]). [name_f]Frances[/name_f] seems bleak by comparison. For this combo overall, I prefer [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] over [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] Carnelian, just because it keeps with the theme of one traditional, down to earth name plus one wildcard name. I guess it just depends on how much you like patterns though. It’s an adorable sibset regardless, and I’d pick this one over the former.

I love [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elin[/name_f]! You posted it on another thread and I was floored. I really think it’s a great name. Of your first names, I really like [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f], [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], and [name_f]Frances[/name_f]. I think any combination of those would work. [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] and [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] are much harder to fit into these sets for me. I’d also probably switch around some of the middle names for a bit better flow, for example using [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] [name_f]Elena[/name_f]. As stated above, I love [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elin[/name_f], and I think [name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is darling.

I would say the first set is linked by its Germanic heritage and the second by Greek/[name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology. The names in the first set feel more wearable to me, although a few of my personal favorites are dispersed throughout the second set.

I’ve revised the original post to get some feedback on

[name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] [name_f]Helen[/name_f], “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]”
[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], “[name_f]Winnie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], “[name_f]Frances[/name_f]”

As a set. If I don’t name our first [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f] [name_f]Elin[/name_f], I think these are my three favorites for little girls. I think they can work, but they’re far from seamless. Worried they don’t fit together.

[name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f] “match” stylistically, but [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] is way out of left field. If cohesiveness is a concern, I would go for [name_f]Helen[/name_f] [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f].

Sorry for the long post…

Might [name_f]Franzetta[/name_f] or [name_f]Franziska[/name_f] /[name_f]Francesca[/name_f]/[name_f]Francisca[/name_f] (or [name_f]Francine[/name_f] /Francette/Francoise/[name_f]Fanchon[/name_f]/[name_f]Franca[/name_f] etc) be a closer fit with [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] or [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] and [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f]? You could use [name_f]Frances[/name_f] as a nickname.

I don’t know if it’s your style, but I think [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], [name_f]Mina[/name_f] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f] (or [name_u]Frannie[/name_u]) work well together (as do [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], Winnieand [name_f]Frances[/name_f]/[name_u]Frannie[/name_u]).
Or, might your husband be open to [name_f]Hermia[/name_f] or [name_f]Hera[/name_f] (or another H name) as a first, with [name_f]Frances[/name_f] as a nn? Hrafnhild (Hrafnhildur) works for [name_f]Frances[/name_f] , and definitely stops that name being “the common one” ; - )

Those thoughts aside, I think our namenerd focus on sibsets can get a bit overwhelming. When they’re children, most people will only hear the names they commonly use as a set (so, if they mostly go by nicknames, [name_f]Frances[/name_f]'s friends and their parents might not even realise [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]/[name_f]Minerva[/name_f]-[name_f]Mina[/name_f]-[name_f]Minnie[/name_f] even have other names).
When they’re teenagers and adults, they’ll have their own separate friends and separate lives.
If you called one child [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] and her sister Eormenburh (just because you liked the sound), that might cause some resentment, but [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is outside the top 500 in the USA, and you have a good reason.
I’ve known many siblings with more disparate names, and they never struck me as odd.

I have every confidence that whatever name(s) you choose will be wonderful.

[name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the first one, however, I also love [name_f]Mathilda[/name_f], [name_f]Wilhelmina[/name_f] & [name_f]Frances[/name_f] together.

With “[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]”, I really like [name_f]Minerva[/name_f] & [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], though not necessarily together (too HP).

The first sibset is my favourite! I love all the combos and nicknames.
