Last min discussing of our girl names list ( surprise gender) I was due 3 days ago
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]My[/name_f] partner is Scandinavian and he suggested [name_f]Thora[/name_f] today. I think it’s so pretty so we both really like it and it’s Norse meaning.
[name_f][/name_f]
The only problem with it that I need help on is that it’s technically pronounced “Tora” in Norwegian/swedish. [name_f]My[/name_f] partners family all are still over there so they would pronounce it this way. Note it doesn’t sound as “sharp” in their accent as it does when it’s said in [name_f]English[/name_f] if that makes sense, it actually sounds quite pretty when they say it “Tora”. However it is different in pronunciation as there is no “th” sound when it’s said, like there would be in [name_f]English[/name_f]. I do feel like [name_f]Thora[/name_f] in an [name_f]English[/name_f] accent is nicer sounding than Tora…
[name_f][/name_f]
Basically I want to know……. Would this slight difference in pronunciation between the languages strike out the name for you?
[name_f][/name_f]
The only other thought I had would be to just go with “Tora” and spell it and pronounce it this way in both languages. However if I am honest I do like “Thora”more and the sound of the “th” makes it softer and more feminine to me with our [name_f]Aussie[/name_f] accent. It is also the more traditional way of spelling the name as it’s technically a feminine version of the masculine Norse name [name_m]Thor[/name_m] ( which In Norwegian/swedish is also pronounced “Tor”).
[name_f][/name_f]
We currently live in Australia but do travel back to visit family over there often and my partner does speak the language to the kids at home.
[name_f][/name_f]
Would you go with either name or too hard???
[name_f]Thora[/name_f] is gorgeous (with any pronunciation)! To be honest, I think you’re overthinking it a bit – a name having multiple pronunciations is very normal within multicultural families! [name_f]My[/name_f] own name is pronounced differently by my partner’s family than how I say it, and it has never bothered me. It’s even fun having this special, different version of your name within certain circles! I’d go for it.

I think it’s fine; as tallemaja says, it’s a fairly common thing in multicultural families [name_f][/name_f]- and I think there’s something kind of cool about her have ‘two names’ in one

It’s lovely and while you’ll definitely get the “Th” sound in [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking countries at first, if that’s not a big deal to you then go for it!

As tallemaja has said, I don’t think it matters if the pronunciations are different. One of my best friends is called [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and her dad is [name_m]German[/name_m], so the [name_m]German[/name_m] side of her family pronounce with an ‘ah’ sound at the end, as is standard in [name_m]German[/name_m]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] her dad pronounces it this way, with her mum pronouncing it the [name_f]English[/name_f] way, so she’s grown up with it and it’s perfectly normal to her. I think she would agree with tallemaja, that it’s quite special to have these different versions of her name.

I love [name_f]Thora[/name_f]. I wouldn’t be bothered by relatives accents pronouncing it different.

Great reply thanks so much!! Yes my husband would say it as [name_f]Tora[/name_f] and I would say [name_f]Thora[/name_f]. But I don’t like the spelling [name_f]Tora[/name_f] / how [name_f]Tora[/name_f] is said in [name_f]English[/name_f] as much as [name_f]Thora[/name_f] so I would love to go with [name_f]Thora[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]! So this helps with my question thanks a lot
Thank you! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you have any suggestions for a middle name, we had [name_f]Summer[/name_f] but [name_f]Thora[/name_f] is goddess of [name_m]Storm[/name_m] so [name_m]Storm[/name_m] [name_f]Summer[/name_f] is a bit much lol
I love the Th sound in [name_f]English[/name_f] more than how [name_f]English[/name_f] say [name_f]Tora[/name_f] so yes I would go with [name_f]Thora[/name_f] not [name_f]Tora[/name_f] spelling
[name_f][/name_f] do you have any middle name suggestions?
[name_f]Thora[/name_f] is lovely! [name_f][/name_f] I actually love the idea of a name said differently in [name_f]English[/name_f] vs. another culture… I remember one of my best friends got such a kick out of going by [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] when she visited the U.S. several years ago! [name_f][/name_f] She was a [name_f]French[/name_f] Jew and her real name was [name_f]Amelie[/name_f] haha. [name_f][/name_f] Both [name_f]Thora[/name_f] and [name_f]Tora[/name_f] are fun, although I would prefer [name_f]Thora[/name_f]. [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Tora[/name_f] reminds me of the Torah, the Hebrew Scriptures. [name_f][/name_f] I do like [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] best still but [name_f]Thora[/name_f] is also very lovely and goes so nicely with Kasper’s name!

I suggest [name_f]Thora[/name_f] for you!
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]- You like it best
[name_f][/name_f]- The Scandinavian soft T pronunciation is not that much different than [name_f]Thora[/name_f], so it would be easy for her to learn and adjust to
[name_f][/name_f]- She will be known by way more people in Australia since that is where she will be raised, so it is better for her to use the spelling/pronunciation you like best since it’s the natural one for that anyway. She will only have extended family in Scandinavia, but will have friends, classmates, teachers, neighbors, co-workers, etc. in Australia. I think it would be a bummer for you to choose a less-preferred name that only a small percentage of people would call her otherwise, especially since they can still use the Scandinavian pronunciation.
[name_f][/name_f]- The proper spelling of the name is still [name_f]Thora[/name_f] in Scandinavia anyway, right? If so, the spelling wouldn’t need to be changed to accommodate their pronunciation anyway
[name_f][/name_f]- With naming her [name_f]Thora[/name_f] and letting your extended family call her by their natural pronunciation, you still get the best of both worlds!
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]
To me, all the factors point to the [name_f]Thora[/name_f] spelling, and I can’t see any factors that make [name_f]Tora[/name_f] better

Another vote for [name_f]Thora[/name_f].
[name_f][/name_f]It seems to check all the boxes for you [name_f][/name_f]- the family will pronounce it as they will regardless, and Aussies will pronounce it like you like it too!

Aussie here, Thora is pretty! I would let her have a special Scandi pronunciation with the same Thora spelling. Also Tora in Australia might sound like “Torah” (Hebrew bible).

Thank you!!! I’m still pregnant lol hopefully this baby will come out soon it’s driving me nuts!!
[name_f][/name_f]I’m hoping that it will just click with what name we go with when we look at them but I do love [name_f]Thora[/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]! Her/his movements have been sooo strong throughout my pregnancy so a “strong” name might be fitting haha. I love the “strong empowered women” vibe [name_f]Thora[/name_f] gives me
[name_f][/name_f] love [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] too but it’s a different vibe!
Thank you! Isn’t it funny because of Torah bright ( Australian snowboarder)
[name_f][/name_f]
I definitely will go with [name_f]Thora[/name_f] if we choose that name

Thank you! Yes agree [name_f]Thora[/name_f] it is! Now just need to decide if [name_f]Kaia[/name_f] or [name_f]Thora[/name_f] suits her, and then a middle name for [name_f]Thora[/name_f] if that’s what we go with

haha oh no! [name_f][/name_f] Hoping sweet babe comes soon! [name_f][/name_f] You’re almost a week past your due date, yes? [name_f][/name_f] I hope baby’s name clicks perfectly for you, too, and it’s easy to decide for you. [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Thora[/name_f] does feel very “strong empowered woman” [name_f][/name_f]- the only [name_f]Thora[/name_f] I’ve come across is in a trilogy I read several years ago [name_f][/name_f]- she was a widowed woman running her husband’s hotel, she was definitely strong and empowered for the time she lived in!
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Kaia[/name_f] feels strong, but in a totally different way for me [name_f][/name_f]- she also feels optimistic and sporty and friendly.
[name_f][/name_f]
Can’t wait to see what sweet babe’s name will be

That’s very cool. [name_f]My[/name_f] son was born on his exact due date too.
[name_f][/name_f]
[name_f]Thora[/name_f] is a great name. I have it on my own list. The only thing that would discourage me, but only slightly, is that it’s fairly unusual so it might be misheard it as [name_f]Zora[/name_f], [name_f]Flora[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f] etc. It’s a little clunky so it won’t be to everyone’s taste either.

Hahaha! [name_f][/name_f] I came right on my due date too, and I think all my siblings (I’m the oldest) came early… guess this little one wants to take his/her time! [name_f][/name_f] Best of luck with everything
