Thora?

I’m really liking the name [name]Thora[/name]. I also love the meaning, “Thunder goddess”.

So WDYT?

Thanks!

I agree that the meaning is cool… but not loving the name [name]Thora[/name]. Is there a longer name that could make a nn [name]Thora[/name]? Makes me think of thorns. Or maybe [name]Thora[/name] would make a nice middle name with a longer more femenine first name. Sorry.

Maybe a nickname for [name]Theodora[/name] or something similar…

I think [name]Thora[/name] is a cool name, it’s quirky and unique but still pretty. I love the meaning too, and I’m kind of fond of [name]Thora[/name] [name]Birch[/name].

[name]Love[/name] it. I think it’s fantastic. I’m a huge [name]Thora[/name] and [name]Thea[/name] fan

Not my usual style at all, but I love it!

Please, please, please don’t do this to your daughter. If you do, be prepared for her to change her name when she gets old enough. If you absolutely must use a variation of [name]Thor[/name] (and I don’t recommend it), then I would use [name]Thorin[/name].

[name]EDIT[/name]: Know a guy named [name]Thor[/name], and he completely agrees with me, don’t use [name]Thora[/name]! He also hates [name]Thorin[/name]. He has never liked his name. And he was subject to tons of name-teasing growing up.

I still like it and I’m not pregnant. [name]Deirdre[/name] your comment was a tad bit rude, though I know you were just trying to be helpful. It kind of hurt my feelings…

Sorry, Evanescencedolly, I didn’t intend to hurt your feelings. I just reacted strongly to the name [name]Thora[/name] and wanted to be honest, since you were seeking advice here. Best of luck.

P.S. If you look at the “What names are you considering for your baby?” section, you will see that I have also strongly advised against the male name [name]Thor[/name] because of my close ties to a guy named [name]Thor[/name]. That is why I reacted so strongly to your choice. Although I adore the person I know named [name]Thor[/name], I am very aware that he dislikes his name and has trouble with it.

[name]Thorin[/name] is a great name. I love it. I have a very close friend who is married to a [name]Thorin[/name] and he loves his name and gets compliments all the time. [name]Thora[/name] is great, too! I hope you use it when the time comes…

One other comment.

I don’t think [name]Thora[/name] “means” thunder goddess. [name]Thor[/name] is the name of the god of thunder in the Norwegian pantheon. But [name]Thor[/name] does not mean “thunder” or “God of thunder”. It’s just his name. Does that make sense? It’s a lot like [name]Zeus[/name] in the Greek pantheon. Consequently, [name]Thora[/name] is simply the feminized version of [name]Thor[/name], who is the god of thunder. As a name, it’s parallel to the name “Zeusa” – a feminization of a god’s name.

But the god’s name, [name]Thor[/name], does not have its own meaning the way some names do. For example, the name [name]Mary[/name] means “sea of bitterness”. [name]Mary[/name] was also the mother of [name]Jesus[/name]. But [name]Mary[/name] does not mean “mother of [name]Jesus[/name]” just because that was her name. If [name]Thor[/name] (and [name]Thora[/name]) have any meaning apart from their association with the god, [name]Thor[/name], I am not aware of it. Perhaps someone else could help with that question.

I hope I am expressing myself clearly!

I think [name]Thora[/name] is a very pretty name. Loved [name]Thora[/name] [name]Birch[/name] in “Patriot Games”. [name]Don[/name]'t like [name]Thoren[/name] as much. Sounds like a cough syrup. No offense! Sorry.

I like [name]Thora[/name], too! I think I first saw [name]Thora[/name] [name]Birch[/name] in a movie called “Paradise” (or something like that) when she was little, and I thought she was darling!

Good luck!

I like “[name]Thora[/name]” too. I have even seen it spelled “Thorra” and I thought that was pretty as well. “[name]Tyra[/name]” is, interestingly enough, also related to the name.

[name]Don[/name]'t sweat it Evanescencedolly. I think [name]Deirdre[/name] has hurt a lot of feelings around here. But I do think she provides a valuable service. Think of her as the prosecuting attorney. If you can defend your case, the name is good to go!

Again, didn’t intend to hurt feelings!! My, oh my!
Go for it! [name]Thor[/name], [name]Thora[/name] … most everyone else seems to like those names. I like the name [name]Thor[/name]. [name]Thora[/name] is still strange to me, but it has a nice sound.

Thank you. You inspired me to do a little research, and I learned something!

So it turns out that [name]Thora[/name] was a character in Norse mythology in her own right. (That is, she has her own stories and is not just a derivative from the god, [name]Thor[/name]). According to Wikipedia, she was a Swedish princess, whose husband won her hand in marriage by slaying a serpent:

And another mention of a mythological [name]Thora[/name], whom I assume is a different person:

[name]Alas[/name], this [name]Thora[/name] does not have a happy story!

I will have to study up on my Norse mythology and Viking history!

Again, didn’t intend to hurt feelings!! My, oh my!

[name]Don[/name]‘t worry, [name]Deirdre[/name], people are Nameberry are kind and love you. Especially 50-year-old me, because I can’t remember most of the posters’ names. [name]Every[/name] day they are fresh and new posters who have always been lovely. I think I remember you though. I remember about 25 posters, I think. Now I know who Norsedad is.

Well, I instantly thought of [name]Arthur[/name]'s “Grandma [name]Thora[/name]” on the kids’s how [name]Arthur[/name] by [name]Marc[/name] [name]Brown[/name], so to me the name feels a little old ladyish which probably indicates it is due for a revival, I would love to meet a little baby named [name]Thora[/name]!

I think [name]Thora[/name] is quirky and interesting. It’s not my style, but I don’t get a visceral response to most names that aren’t my style. I don’t understand a strong warning against this name, some people just don’t like their name. It doesn’t seem to have any serious red flags like “just too weird” or have a potty word in it or something, or trendy or misspelled. I think if you like this name, it’s ok, and if you don’t like this name, at least it’s not your name or your kid’s name!
