Thoughts about Flora or Virginia?

I had a great grandmother named [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. My husband is from [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. Can’t quite decide what I think of these names. Let me know how they sound to you. Thanks!

I like both, especially as I have a great- grandma with the name [name_f]Virginia[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Florence[/name_f] [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] sounds nice, but I love [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f].

I know that [name_f]Florence[/name_f] isn’t [name_f]Flora[/name_f], I just thought that it flowed a little better. It would still honor your
great- grandmother in my opinion, so I wanted to throw that one out to you.

ETA: If you don’t like both together, I’d pick [name_f]Flora[/name_f] over [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] just because it’s a family name rather
than a place name. Also, I love the nickname [name_f]Vira[/name_f] for [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [V-ear-ah], and love it so much more than “[name_f]Flo[/name_f]”.

I prefer [name_f]Flora[/name_f] over [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] myself. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] has a more feminine feel to it and a few cute nn’s…[name_f]Florrie[/name_f], [name_f]Flossie[/name_f], [name_f]Flo[/name_f]. [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] reminds me of [name_m]Virgil[/name_m] with a more masculine feel, however I do like the nn [name_f]Ginnie[/name_f].

I love both of them!

[name_f]Flora[/name_f] is robust and abundant, a floral wreath of a name. None of the shyness of a [name_f]Pansy[/name_f], yet softer than [name_f]Zinnia[/name_f].

It has the great nicknames [name_f]Flossie[/name_f], [name_f]Florrie[/name_f], and [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Dora[/name_f] (a classic old red rose).

[name_f]Virginia[/name_f] is stately, queenly, elegant.

Reminiscent of [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] and the soft greenness of the state of [name_f]Virginia[/name_f].

Many nickname options: [name_f]Gin[/name_f], [name_f]Ginnie[/name_f], [name_f]Ginny[/name_f], [name_f]Ginia[/name_f], the [name_m]French[/name_m] [name_f]Virginie[/name_f].

I like [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] as a whole name (sounds better somehow than [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Flora[/name_f]).

I love the name [name_f]Flora[/name_f].

Not crazy about the two names together, but I suppose [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] could work. I’m just not crazy about the “a” sound at the end of both.

I prefer [name_f]Florence[/name_f], with the possible nn [name_f]Flora[/name_f], to [name_f]Flora[/name_f] on its own. [name_f]Florence[/name_f] just has a nicer sound to me. [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] is nice, but it just makes me think of how the state of [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] was literally a reference to [name_f]Queen[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]'s supposed virginity. And when she’s a teenager the virgin jokes will be overwhelming. Though it [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] is a lovely way to get to the cute nickname [name_f]Ginny[/name_f].

As a [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], I thought I would add my thoughts to this conversation! To be honest, I have never really enjoyed having the name [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. It didn’t fit as a child or teenager - it always seemed too formal and was highly teasable. Now, as an adult, I mostly go by [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] or [name_f]Gin[/name_f] in my personal life, which is often mistaken for [name_f]Jenny[/name_f] in social situations. Professionally I use [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] but this has caused confusion when coworkers become friends. Oh, and a scary number of people cannot spell [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], regularly missing the final I or replacing the first I with an E or, to my horror, an A! As a middle name, I think it would be just fine but possibly paired with something other than [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] or [name_f]Florence[/name_f] are lovely first names. Good luck!

I like [name_f]Flora[/name_f] more than [name_f]Virginia[/name_f], and I would use an honor name over the place. If you want to use both, I actually think [name_f]Flora[/name_f] [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] sounds really nice and has a good rhythm, despite both ending in A, which is something I usually avoid ([name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Flora[/name_f] just sounds like you are describing the plants in VA).

[name_m]Both[/name_m] names are lovely

Some other suggestions:

Cheers

I much prefer [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. It’s vintage, charming, feminine but grounded rather than frilly. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] is a bit cutesy for me, I’d prefer [name_f]Flora[/name_f] nn [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. I second the suggestion of [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f].

[name_m]Both[/name_m] are really great names. I prefer [name_f]Flora[/name_f]!

Thanks everyone. This was helpful. I was already leaning towards [name_f]Flora[/name_f]. I hadn’t actually considered doing one or the other for a middle name, but that’s a possibility.

I really like [name_f]Virginia[/name_f]. It’s one of the names that I’d love to see being used more. [name_f]Flora[/name_f] sounds quite frumpy to me. I prefer [name_f]Florence[/name_f].
