First of all, my husband is determined that if we have a boy his first name is going to be [name]Jon[/name] (my DH is the 5th generation of first sons named ‘[name]Jon[/name]’ although all have different middle names) after himself, which is fine by me. However, the middle names are up to me.
For starters, my maternal grandfather’s name is [name]Clifford[/name] and as he was more of a father to me than anyone else, I’d like to put that in there (that’s a non negotiable).
However, the second middle name is raising a few eyebrows.
I moved to [name]Missouri[/name] when I was 22 (I’m 29 now) from Australia and I immediately fell in love with the state and everything about it. I’m crazy into history and literature, and have fallen in love with the works of [name]Mark[/name] [name]Twain[/name] since moving here (undoubtedly the world’s most famous Missourian along with [name]Walt[/name] Disney) in addition to having a great deal of admiration for the man himself.
[name]Mark[/name] [name]Twain[/name]'s real name was [name]Samuel[/name] Langhorne [name]Clemens[/name]. I’m not keen on the names [name]Mark[/name] or [name]Twain[/name], or the name [name]Samuel[/name] or [name]Clemens[/name]. Although Langhorne is [name]OTT[/name] ‘American’ sounding, I actually quite like it.
Therefore, the full name including our surname (last name) a son would be:
Since the [name]Jon[/name] and the [name]Clifford[/name] are not up for debate, what are people’s opinions on the name Langhorne? I think it’s going to be one of those things that you either love or hate. I’m still curious though as to what others think!
Middles aren’t referred to very often, so if you like it go for it! However, you could also come up with some sort of Twainish name that come from one of his characters like [name]Sawyer[/name] or or [name]Huck[/name] or [name]Finn[/name].
I adore the name [name]Clifford[/name]! So handsome! And I really love the alliteration you have with Langhorne [name]Lee[/name]. Since the name has a special meaning to you, I think that it is perfect.
Well as an Aussie myself I would want to keep an element of Australian heritage in my choice of names.
Why not go for something really Australian like [name]Banjo[/name]?
[name]Jon[/name] [name]Clifford[/name] [name]Banjo[/name] [name]Lee[/name]
or
Literary
“From the Term of His Natural Life” by [name]Marcus[/name] [name]Clarke[/name] the most fabulous Australian classic and choose [name]Marcus[/name] which has the [name]Mark[/name] [name]Twain[/name] connection too?
Combo
Oh my gosh he sounds like a Civil War [name]General[/name]. I really like it. As a side note, I’m in law school and we keep learning about these old man Supreme [name]Court[/name] Justices who have awesome names like these and I just think this name sounds like a [name]Justice[/name].
sparrowfinch: Haha this is true, it does sound like one of those names from back in the day, doesn’t it?
rollo: Thanks for your input… honestly, as awful as this sounds, I feel no affinity toward Australia whatsoever. I realize I grew up there- but I have never felt a connection to it as others have. On the flip side, when I moved to [name]Missouri[/name] I fell completely in love with it. I moved away for a few years (to [name]North[/name] [name]Carolina[/name] as my DH was in the [name]Marine[/name] Corps) and I was ‘homesick’ for [name]Missouri[/name] every single day and couldn’t wait to finally move back! I have never felt that strongly about Australia or experienced the same emotions. I guess I’m a bad Australian So I just wouldn’t feel comfortable giving my baby a name inspired by a place I genuinely don’t like, no offense,
Gosh, I love Langhorne! I agree with [name]Sparrow[/name], he sounds like a Civil War general, how awesome! [name]Jon[/name] [name]Clifford[/name] Langhorne [name]Lee[/name] is amazing, I would absolutely go for that name.
[name]Reading[/name] the post I was certain the name would be horrid, but when I read Langhorne it just said click!
Oh glamatomic you are making me cry. Australia is the best country in the world, I am enormously proud be an Aussie. Didn’t you shed a tear with the famous [name]Peter[/name] [name]Allen[/name] when he or [name]Hugh[/name] Jackman sang the famous song, “I still call Australia home”?
The Qantas anthem. honestly every time I have flown to Australia all the expat Aussies start crying when they play that song upon entering Australian airspace.
[name]Jon[/name] [name]Clifford[/name] Langhorne [name]Lee[/name] is fantastic. I completely agree that it sounds like the name of a handsome, distinguished Civil War general. I love how meaningful it is to you as well.
It is certainly a mouth full. The name is very nice, however, I would limit it to one middle name. That’s just my opinion, though. Like I said, it is a nice name. I am a huge fan of [name]John[/name]/[name]Jon[/name].
