Thoughts on Agnes?

I’m really starting to like this name and wondered how others felt about it? DH isn’t sure but he’s not entirely against it either. All berry opinions, good or bad, would be helpful and appreciated

It’s a great name, but not my favorite. I guess I just picture a very different girl (not like I picture my future daughter) when I hear it. I’d love to meet somebody named [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], though.

I don’t really have any feelings about [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], not a huge fan of it but don’t see a reason why it shouldn’t be used either. The one thing I like about [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is the nn [name_f]Aggie[/name_f], which I find adorable! (and a great alliterative for parents who love [name_f]Addie[/name_f] but find it too popular.) Part of issue for me is I can’t picture [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] on a little girl, but if I were to meet a little [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] that would change and I imagine I would really like the name.

I love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and [name_f]Agatha[/name_f] I love using [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] as a nn, and [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] sounds adorable. For some reason, to me, ‘old people’ names sound absolutely adorable on little kids, and I prefer seeing names like [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_m]Ernest[/name_m] used over [name_u]McKinley[/name_u] and [name_u]Hayden[/name_u].

I like it a lot! The nickname [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is just so cute! I think that the tides are changing in terms of “old lady” names…they’re becoming quite chic nowadays, not just on Nameberry. The name [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] was used in the movie Despicable Me, which was rather popular, so I think more people wouldn’t be so opposed to hearing the name [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] or similar names on a young girl.

Maybe give [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] a more “mainstream” middle name ([name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], [name_f]Jane[/name_f], etc), so that if she doesn’t like her first name, she can go by something else. But I wouldn’t mind being named [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. So much history, cute nickname, great meaning…what’s not to love?!

I’m not a fan but I can’t really say why! [name_m]Just[/name_m] something about it…maybe it kind of reminds me of agony?

I agree  [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is so adorable!

As for mn’s, I was thinking [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]… What do you think?

Oh my gosh the meaning - pure - is just beautiful isn’t it!

If we ever had an [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] she would probably be a sister to [name_f]Nora[/name_f] and/or [name_m]Henry[/name_m] - do you think they make a good sibset?

I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I watched Despicable Me, I fell in love with it.
I couldn’t dare use it for a middle though… First name only!!

[name_f]Agnes[/name_f] [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u] [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is gorgeous! And [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Nora[/name_f], and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] is a perfect sibset!

I like it but my fiance hates it

I love another form of the name much more - [name_f]Ines[/name_f]. The trouble with [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is the sound of it. It’s heavy and clunky. I also prefer the [name_m]French[/name_m] pronunciation of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] to the English (ahn-YEHS vs. [name_f]AG[/name_f]-nes) but not many English speakers would pronounce it that way. I think an [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] would “fit” right in with the vintage names on the scene today like [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and [name_f]Florence[/name_f]. While it’s not my favourite vintage name, it certainly isn’t the worst either. [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] is not on the same level as [name_f]Bertha[/name_f], [name_f]Beulah[/name_f] and [name_f]Myrtle[/name_f].

I could see [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] coming back in the next five years or so. We’ve had [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], [name_u]Abbie[/name_u], and [name_f]Addie[/name_f], so [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] does feel like the next logical step.

Personally, I think it sound really old, like a grandmother’s name. I don’t think it is completely unusable, but I would never consider it. I guess it will eventually come back in style and [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is an adorable nn.

Sorry, but I don’t like it at all. I can’t imagine it on a child. It sounds like a grandma name to me.

I love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]! I particularly love it said in [name_m]French[/name_m] (ahn-YESS), and I imagine the cutest little [name_m]French[/name_m] girl, very chic and sweet and kind and helpful. Unlike everyone else, I don’t like [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] (all I can think of is old hag, but it does have that same sweet feeling that [name_f]Addy[/name_f], [name_u]Abby[/name_u], [name_u]Allie[/name_u], [name_f]Maddie[/name_f], [name_f]Maggie[/name_f], etc., have), but I do love the idea of [name_f]Annie[/name_f] as a nn for [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], or even [name_f]Anya[/name_f], with the [name_m]French[/name_m] prn. I would be tickled pink to meet a little [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]!

I adore [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]. It’s chic and strong at the same time. I think it has already lost the old lady image and is really a great choice. Go with it.

I know a 2 year old [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] and she has absolutely brought me over to loving this name. She also isn’t called by any nicknames (yet), which may change as she gets a little older. [name_f]Aggie[/name_f] is cute, but it seems much cooler to just wear the clunky name and really make it work (which she does).

This name will always cause me a bit of naming regret. I LOVED this name, and have loved it since reading [name_m]David[/name_m] Cooperfield (there’s a lovely character named, [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] Wickfield). To me it’s the perfect combination of sweet and strong.

However, I just couldn’t get my husband on board. So we went with [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] (which of course I do love). Buuuuut there are occasional moments where I wish we could have used [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], especially since my daughter actually seems like an [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] to me (quiet, strong-willed, sweet, but feisty when she warms up). Oh well, naming is a joint sport, so it wasn’t meant to be for us. But I’d encourage anyone else to use [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]! I think it’s a wonderful name!

I love [name_f]Agnes[/name_f] - go for it. x

Can I point out that Mother Teresa’s birth name was Anjeze which translated to english is Agnes!
