I don’t see much discussion on the name [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] so I have some questions
~ What imagery do you get from [name_m]Alvin[/name_m]? What about with the nickname “Al” or “Alvy” ?? What kind of kid or man would [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] be?
~ Would you say he’s more tied to a certain time period, or more classic? He ranks fairly low in the top 1000 now, but has ranked much higher in the past.
~ Associations? I definitely think of chipmunks! But it’s not necessarily a bad association for me.
~ Alternative boy names to [name_m]Alvin[/name_m]? Thanks!
I want to like it, but I instantly think of the chipmunks, which isn’t necessarily a bad connotation. [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] feels vintage to me but not dated. [name_m]Al[/name_m] gives it more of an old-man feel, while [name_u]Alvy[/name_u] livens it up. [name_f]My[/name_f] only other thought is [name_m]Elvin[/name_m], but I wouldn’t let the chipmunk association stop you from using/liking [name_m]Alvin[/name_m]!
@kidpix21 right, i immediately have a picture of a chipmunk in my head. Personally i actually like [name_u]Alvy[/name_u] as a full name better, but i think in general it comes off a little childish to most people! Thank you!!
I actually think it’s a handsome name (And [name_u]Alvy[/name_u] is cute!) but it is both strongly associated with the chipmunks and very dated/old-mannish in general. I’ve encountered a fair amount of Alvins when reading about the 19th century, but in real life none who would have been born after about 1940, and SSA name stats (at least for the US) line up with that. So I think it’s not tied to a specific period, but is too disused to be considered a real classic.
Similar names: well, obviously, Albert/Alby and Alfred/Alfie. Similar sound and vibe but no chipmunk association. Also [name_u]Arthur[/name_u], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], or [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] give me similar vibes as well.
[name_m]Alvin[/name_m] gives me sort of clunky-cutesy, 80s/90s sitcom vibes - like the brainy kid, the musical teen, the slightly quirky best friend - something like that?
I love that!! The sitcom vibe!! I love the name suggestions. [name_m]Calvin[/name_m] is adorable, I have always liked it a lot. It has a coziness to it. [name_m]Russell[/name_m] is another “feel good” name too!
I have liked [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] since someone I know used it as a middle name for their son. I thought that it made such an amazing middle name - he has a very common, traditional first name - so [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] really livens it up.
I’d love to see it used a first name! Seeing it on a cute baby or kid, I would find it irresistible. It’s smart and distinctive, but soundwise it still fits in with a lot of common names these days.
I’ll suggest [name_m]Allan[/name_m] as an alternative. Also [name_u]Edison[/name_u] - because I always think of [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_u]Alva[/name_u] [name_u]Edison[/name_u] when I think of [name_m]Alvin[/name_m].
I love [name_m]Alvin[/name_m]! It’s a green toned, acorns in the forest with the elves sort of a name to me [name_u]Alvy[/name_u] is an adorable nn!
[name_m]Alvin[/name_m] feels pretty vintage, but I have never met a single person with this name that I can remember
I really get ‘chipmunk’ a lot less than you’d think when the Chipmunks strongly featured in my childhood and then my son’s!
Here are some names that feel like [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] to me:
[name_m]Edwin[/name_m]
[name_m]Errol[/name_m]
[name_m]Ernest[/name_m]
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
Elric
[name_u]Aven[/name_u] & [name_m]Eamon[/name_m]
[name_m]Alvin[/name_m] feels buttoned-up and bookish. I’d consider it a name that’s out of style though that can be an attractive quality depending on the person. I would group it with names like [name_m]Horace[/name_m] and [name_m]Nestor[/name_m].
I really enjoy the idea of [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] with your older three. The sibset makes [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] feel retro chic. I don’t have a strong sense of time period for [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] overall but I would lean vintage.
For alternatives I’d suggest [name_m]Elwyn[/name_m], [name_m]Selwyn[/name_m], [name_m]Orson[/name_m], [name_u]Earl[/name_u], [name_m]Marvin[/name_m], [name_m]Ansel[/name_m], [name_m]Irving[/name_m], [name_m]Winston[/name_m] and [name_m]Elwood[/name_m].
i see alvin as sporty but a little bit shy. he’s to me – retro and cuddly!
as a whole he feels a bit vintage, but i could definitely see him on a little one as well, especially with a nn. i like alvy a lot! al feels much more ‘old-man’ to me.
i was good friends with an alvin in middle school, so i’ve always associated it pretty closely with him! the chipminks are pretty neutral of an association for me, and i think will become less tied to the name in newer generations.
I know literally everyone has said it… but I certainly think of the Chipmunk! I never watched them as a kid, but I think of him anyway. Still even besides that, I prefer cozy [name_m]Calvin[/name_m]! I love [name_u]Alvy[/name_u], [name_m]Al[/name_m], [name_u]Cal[/name_u] (or even [name_u]Vinnie[/name_u] would be sweet!?) for nicknames.
[name_u]Ive[/name_u] been thinking about this one a lot recently (my girls loved the chipmunk christmas album this year so we listened to it a lot)
I would love to meet a little [name_m]Alvin[/name_m]. [name_m]Simon[/name_m] & [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] are 100% back in style, I think we need to bring [name_m]Alvin[/name_m] back.
