Thoughts on Anastasia & middle names

We’ve been thinking about using the name [name]Anastasia[/name]. It’s between [name]Anastasia[/name] and [name]Victoria[/name] (we like the combo [name]Victoria[/name] [name]Maureen[/name]), but we’re open to all suggestions. My DDs name is [name]Primrose[/name] Achlys. (Ak-liss)

A few questions:

  1. Does [name]Anastasia[/name] remind you of the animated movie [name]Anastasia[/name]/Grand Duchess [name]Anastasia[/name]? Are these the first things you think of?

  2. What are some nickname possibilities beyond [name]Ana[/name] and [name]Stacy[/name]? If I wanted my daughter to go by the full [name]Anastasia[/name] instead of a nickname, how do I “prevent” nicknames? Would it be strange for [name]Anastasia[/name] to go by her full name as her older sister goes by Prim or [name]Rosey[/name].

  3. [name]How[/name] do [name]Primrose[/name] & [name]Anastasia[/name] sound together?

  4. Any middle name suggestions?

I like [name]Anastasia[/name], though admittedly, the duchess is the first association I have with the name, but people would get over that.

As for nicknames, Personally I believe they’re unavoidable, certain people will always shorten a longer name… But some others to consider beyond [name]Ana[/name] & [name]Stacy[/name] could be: [name]Anya[/name], [name]Asia[/name], Tasie, [name]Sasha[/name] ( a little bit of a stretch)

I really like [name]Anastasia[/name]. It’s a high contendor for a middle name for me (not because I don’t like it for first, I just have other names that suit my husband’s taste, and our last name, better).

[name]Anastasia[/name] and [name]Primrose[/name] are both somewhat uncommon (though [name]Anastasia[/name] is rising), [name]Primrose[/name] and [name]Victoria[/name] is a little less matched for popularity/familiarity, although I think they really balance nicely because they both feel “Victorian”.

A few more [name]Anastasia[/name] nicknames I can think of:
[name]Annie[/name]
[name]Asta[/name]
Sia
[name]Asia[/name]
[name]Tay[/name]

I don’t think it would be too weird for her to go by her full name, despite the length and her sister going by nn’s. I know plenty of sibsets where some use a nn and some use the full name, it doesn’t seem to be a huge deal. I do think that pp’s are work, some people are inevitably going to make a nickname, but I do think you can prevent most polite people from doing it by just being clear when you introduce her.

I do think of the historical figure (not the cartoon), but I also think of the [name]Tori[/name] [name]Amos[/name] song and the meaning of resurrection and the young adult series of books with a character called [name]Anastasia[/name] Krupnik. I think the name is strongly but not unbreakably associated with the duchess. Something to be sure you know: this is the protagonist of the 50 Shades of [name]Gray[/name] novels. She goes by [name]Ana[/name] I believe.

Good luck!

I always go by my full name, you just have to be gently insistent in correcting people who try to shorten it and it shouldn’t be hard with an uncommon name like [name]Anastasia[/name]. The only [name]Anastasia[/name] I know goes by her full name (my only quibble is that I say [name]Anna[/name]-[name]Star[/name]-zia while my husband says [name]Anna[/name]-Stay-sha).

My great, great aunt - [name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Grace[/name] - was referred to as [name]Nancy[/name].

A few questions:

  1. Does [name]Anastasia[/name] remind you of the animated movie [name]Anastasia[/name]/Grand Duchess [name]Anastasia[/name]? Are these the first things you think of? YES!

NOPE & MAYBE

  3. [name]How[/name] do [name]Primrose[/name] & [name]Anastasia[/name] sound together? [name]ONE[/name] HAS MORE SYLLABLES SO NOT WELL

I like [name]Anastasia[/name] quite a lot. The Duchess comes to mind - But so does 50 Shades of [name]Gray[/name], which isn’t the best association.

I really like the nick name [name]Tacy[/name] for [name]Anastasia[/name] (as in the [name]Betsy[/name]-[name]Tacy[/name] books series). It’s different enough from [name]Stacy[/name] to make it interesting. While the name [name]Anastasia[/name] may forever be associated with the duchess, it has been widely used enough to make this much less important.

Why are you still doing this?

I liked the combination you posted on the “if I had a baby today, I would name it…” thread. [name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Primrose[/name] is sweet.

(it would be an odd choice if she actually had a big sister called [name]Primrose[/name], though…)

Nicknames are NOT unavoidable, I say this as someone who has a name that everyone wants to shorten/has a popular nickname. Once I politely correct someone once, it’s never an issue.

That being said, when she’s older she might like one of her nickname options.

I love [name]Anastasia[/name]. I think it’s a real head turner when you hear it. Go for it!

What about [name]Anastasia[/name] [name]May[/name], [name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Jane[/name], [name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Claire[/name] or [name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Grace[/name]?

First off, swooning at [name]Anastasia[/name] and [name]Primrose[/name]! I love it! You can’t prevent nns 100%, but if you call her only by her full name then it won’t be as common, some nn i can think of are [name]Anya[/name], Sia, [name]Sisi[/name] (cece), [name]Asia[/name], or [name]Stasia[/name]. I think immediatly of a princess, more of a cute and elegant disney princess though!

[name]Anastasia[/name] does remind me of the animated movie/Grand Duchess. Then my mind leaps to Fifty Shades of [name]Gray[/name]. As for nicknames, I’m very much lost besides [name]Ana[/name] and [name]Stacey[/name]. It’s such an elegant name though, I wouldn’t want to shorten it. Nicknames are sometimes inevitable. [name]Primrose[/name] might not be able to say [name]Anastasia[/name] at first, so it might get shortened. But I think that if you call her [name]Anastasia[/name] and she introduces herself as [name]Anastasia[/name], other people with call her that too. And I don’t think it would be strange to have [name]Primrose[/name] use a nickname and [name]Anastasia[/name] not. I’ve seen it countless times before.

I don’t think that [name]Primrose[/name] and [name]Anastasia[/name] sound perfect together, but I also don’t think that’s the most important thing. If you love the name [name]Anastasia[/name], then use it! As for middle names, I like:
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Blaire[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Corinne[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Eileen[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Faye[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Harriet[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Isabelle[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Kate[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Louise[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Nell[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Olive[/name]

I don’t care for [name]Victoria[/name]. I’ve only met unpleasant ones, and I hate the nickname [name]Vicky[/name].

I babysit an [name]Anastasia[/name], so she is the person I think of first, but admittedly before she was born I only associated it with the animated movie. I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing though. Also when she was born, honestly my first reaction was “Wow, that’s a lot of name” - partly because her last name is a 4-syllable, 9 letter monster that is VERY Greek, also because I tend to like names that are two syllables or less. But she has made it much more wearable to me.

I think [name]Anastasia[/name] and [name]Primrose[/name] are fine together. [name]Victoria[/name] and [name]Primrose[/name] sounds slightly better but I dislike the name [name]Victoria[/name] because of bad associations.

[name]Anya[/name], Tasi, [name]Stasia[/name], [name]Tasia[/name] are all nickname options. I could see [name]Tia[/name] as well. I also like the suggestion of [name]Nancy[/name], although the [name]Anastasia[/name] I know goes by [name]Ana[/name].

I don’t remember the movie very well. I watched it when I was little and got really scared. I’ve pretty much hated it up until now because of that, but it’s starting to grow on me. I think it sounds really pretty now, but I probably won’t use it. [name]Primrose[/name] sounds great with it.

  1. Yes, it does. It isn’t the worst association in the world though.
  2. [name]Asia[/name]? I prefer [name]Anastasia[/name] as is. No nicknames.
  3. I think they are mismatched, and [name]Primrose[/name] is too “Hunger Games” for me (even though I liked that movie and book).

[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Jasmine[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Mary[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Iris[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Lucy[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Helen[/name]
[name]Anastasia[/name] [name]Dorothy[/name]
