My husband very much likes the name [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] nn [name_f]Andi[/name_f]. I haven’t been able to find a lot of information on people’s responses to this name, so what are your thoughts? My feelings right now are that it is a big name, with a lot of history, and nn options that give a child flexibility if she doesn’t like it. She could go by [name_f]Ann[/name_f] if she wanted. We believe in giving a child a name that we like and that doesn’t make any assumptions about who they might be. I feel like the history plus nn options leaves room for [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] to shape any life she wants. All that being said, I’m not sure how to balance a name like [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] with other sibling names…I don’t want our naming style to be characterized as too out-there…or too greek- or celestial-inspired…too erudite or too crunchy. Overall I’d like names that feel balanced and thoughtful: think [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_u]Story[/name_u] and [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Atlas[/name_m], a much loved nameberry sibset.
Other first names on our list:
[name_m]Desmond[/name_m] possibly nn’d [name_m]Dex[/name_m]?
[name_m]Gareth[/name_m] possibly nn’d [name_m]Rhett[/name_m]??
[name_m]Alistair[/name_m] possibly nn’d [name_u]Ash[/name_u]?
[name_m]Rupert[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucian[/name_m] nn [name_m]Luc[/name_m]/[name_m]Luke[/name_m]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_m]Fred[/name_m] ([name_f]Andi[/name_f] and [name_m]Fred[/name_m] is too theme-y though, right?)
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] (too starry/celestial right? And there’s the extreme length difference…is that a problem?)
[name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] (is it too pedestrian next [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f]
[name_u]Juniper[/name_u]
[name_f]Laurel[/name_f]? [name_f]Marguerite[/name_f]? Not sold yet

I’m definitely open to hearing honest opinions (or I wouldn’t be asking!) and would love to know your thoughts on sibling name options. Please feel free to offer ideas to add to our list! [name_f]TIA[/name_f]!
P.s.I am hoping to be pregnant very soon so…fingers crossed!
Honestly if I was using [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] I’d go full out with the constellation names. [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f], [name_m]Draco[/name_m], [name_u]Orion[/name_u], [name_m]Sirius[/name_m], ect, but thats just me
I love the name [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] (especially with nicknames [name_f]Ann[/name_f]/[name_f]Annie[/name_f]/[name_f]Andi[/name_f] bringing it down to earth and making it totally wearable) and I think it fits in fairly well with the other names you like, particularly your boys’ names. I can easily imagine [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] or [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_m]Gareth[/name_m]. It’s not a bad fit with your girls’ names, either, although perhaps a tad more elaborate and unusual. I myself have a name that’s longer and more unusual than my three siblings’ names, but I think it still sounds fine in the set, especially since we all go by nicknames of roughly the same length.
If you’re after something balanced and thoughtful, I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is the way to go. I know it looks long on paper, but when said aloud, [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] is actually pretty short.
If you’re after something bolder, [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Cait[/name_f] or [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_u]Winter[/name_u] would be cool. More vintage, go for [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] or [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f].
Middle names aside, I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is an awesome name with nn options that make it totally usable. I’d be very excited to meet a little [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]!
I love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]! It’s such a cool name with lots of good nicknames and interesting meaning/history. I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Andy[/name_u]/[name_f]Andi[/name_f] as a nickname. For the record I think [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] are fabulous too, and could totally work in a sibset :). I actually think varying name lengths/styles in a set can be a good thing.
With regard to your concerns, it’s good to put a lot of thought into a name (how wearable it is, how it works in a sibset, etc) but don’t let those things bog you down too much. If your intuition says that [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is THE name, it will work fine. Especially if it’s your first child–you never know how many others you’ll have and what their genders will be, so might as well use your favorite one the first time! I also agree with @geeknamezyo’s middle name suggestions.
Thank you, guys! It took a little while to get responses so I assumed that I hadn’t gotten any at all tried on the other forum. You all are so sweet. He’ll be thrilled you all love [name_f]Andi[/name_f] and [name_m]Gareth[/name_m], those are his two top picks I’ll take everythimg you’ve said into consideration–again, thank you so much for your thoughtful responses. I love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and I am so glad that you like it in a sibset with [name_u]Juniper[/name_u]. [name_f]Andi[/name_f] and [name_f]Juno[/name_f] <3
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is undeniably a big name, but I don’t think it’s too big. It’s recognisable, with lots of great history and connotations and, as you have already pointed out, it is nickname rich. I think it would be a beautiful name to use.
In terms of boy siblings, I think [name_m]Gareth[/name_m] and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] sound a little ordinary to be siblings to [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]. I love [name_m]Alistair[/name_m], though you posibly don’t want to go down alliteration way, and also [name_m]Rupert[/name_m]. I could see [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] being siblings. For girls names, my favourites are [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], both are unusual enough to not seem too pedestrian next to [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], but in a different way, so nobody could accuse you of having a ‘theme’. My favourite is [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], I don’t think [name_f]Andi[/name_f] and [name_m]Fred[/name_m] is too similar, just really cute!! I think [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is too short and also too celestial. [name_f]Laurel[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] are lovely names but don’t quite fit in for me. If I had to create a sibset I would have [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f].
My favourite middle names for [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] would be:
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]-This is lovely and the classic [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] helps to ground the slightly more unusual [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]. [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] isn’t as long as you think it is either, which is good.
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]-Gorgeous, and importantly, not too long.
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u]-I love this so much, but I think it might sadly be too much.
I think my ideal sibset here would be [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f], [name_m]Rupert[/name_m] [name_m]Tavish[/name_m] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_u]Valentine[/name_u].
Agree with lamantchenille on all points! I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] is definitely ‘out there’ to non-nameberry folks but it’s a lovely, dramatic and surprising choice. [name_f]Andi[/name_f] definitely brings it down to earth–very cute! Again, seconding pp, [name_m]Gareth[/name_m] and [name_m]Desmond[/name_m] don’t quite match up to [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]'s uniqueness. But then again, I can’t think of many names that are on that level! I like [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] as a sister and [name_m]Alistair[/name_m] or [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] as brothers. [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is my favorite combo.
I love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]!
I wouldn’t go with a long middle even if it’s pronounced as a shorter name because it will be bothersome for her to write it down every time she has to, lol. I also like it better balanced with a shorter name.
On the other hand, I don’t thing it looks well with shorter names, like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], even if they share a theme.
From your suggestions, with [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] I like: [name_m]Desmond[/name_m], middles [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]/[name_m]Tavish[/name_m] and [name_f]Frances[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Ruth[/name_f] as middles for [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f]. [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] also on its own, for a sibling.
