Thoughts on Antigone, Millicent and Ottilie?

These are my newest name loves as such - I have been fond of them for a while, but now I am loving them more than I have before.

[name]Just[/name] a side note, I pronounce [name]Antigone[/name] as anne-tig-oh-nee and [name]Ottilie[/name] as oh-till-ee-uh.

Very interested in hearing other’s opinions on these names whether they be good or bad.

Thank you!

[name]Millicent[/name] is lovely, feminine and [name]Mille[/name] is an adorable NN.
[name]Antigone[/name] sounds okay the way you pronounce it, but I believe everyone will say it like it looks: Anti-Gone. I don’t like it at all, sounds really harsh and negative.
Otillie is cute, but I also think it will be mispronounced all the time. I see it and think O-[name]Tilly[/name].

I don’t think that the stories behind myth names are always dealbreakers, but to me, [name]Antigone[/name] has basically the most tragic story in all of the Greek myths. I wouldn’t want to give that name to a little girl.

I love Milliscent. I think it’s gorgeous and [name]Millie[/name] is one of my favorite nicknames. Ottillie is very pretty. I think there’s some pronunciation issues, but if that doesn’t bother you, it doesn’t bother me.

[name]Antigone[/name] is not at all usable. First of all, she’s the product of an incestuous relationship between [name]Oedipus[/name] and his mother. In and of itself, that’s tragic, but in Sophocles’ [name]Antigone[/name] she hangs herself (everyone kills themselves in this play, if I remember correctly). I can’t imagine what it would be like to be named [name]Antigone[/name] when my high school class reads that play. From an ugly beginning to an ugly end and when pronounced correctly, it sounds a lot like agony. Which, I guess, is appropriate.

I quite like [name]Antigone[/name], and [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Ottilie[/name] (aw-till-ee), but I think you are asking for pronunciation problems saying [name]Ottilie[/name] the way you do, maybe spell it [name]Ottilia[/name] for your pronunciation. [name]Ottilie[/name] has nothing to indicate an -uh sound at the end. [name]Millicent[/name] is just okay, like [name]Millie[/name] though!

I adore [name]Antigone[/name], and I don’t let the mythology bother me. My own name is very tragic and involves rape and it has never bothered me in the slightest and I have known the story since I was, like, 11?

[name]Ottilie[/name] is another long time love of mine - I pronounce it differently, but in the US, I do agree that [name]Ottilia[/name] [name]MAY[/name] serve you better.

[name]Millicent[/name] is not a favorite of mine, but there is nothing wrong with it.

Completely agree. Also I really have to agree with pp’s that [name]Antigone[/name] is not usable at all. Plus it reminds me of the word antagonist or agony which don’t have good associations either. I think it would be a hard name to live with. [name]Millicent[/name] is great in theory, but I don’t think a little girl would like to be named [name]Millicent[/name] very much. [name]Just[/name] my opinion.

[name]Antigone[/name] is on my list. I adore it.

And to the poster who mentioned incest, we are all products of incest. [name]How[/name] was it [name]Antigone[/name]'s fault? And yeah, she hangs herself. Greek tragedy is called tragedy for a reason.

I think [name]Antigone[/name] is usable, I even know one. Her story is amazing, she’s so brave and inspiring. No one can help where they come from, and the incest between [name]Oedipus[/name] and his mother was an accident as well.
I don’t like [name]Millicent[/name] at all, it’s such a fussy old lady name, a house smelling of old tea and stale biscuits.
Being an [name]Ottilie[/name] I have to say in English speaking countries it will be pronounced o-tuh-lee. I pronounce it the [name]German[/name] way (like you do) and it’s been a pain. I would spell it [name]Ottilia[/name] (although I prefer the look of [name]Ottilie[/name]) unless you think the Aussies will pronounce it right (they very well might!).

I think [name]Antigone[/name] is only usable as a middle. It looks quite negative to me - I see the word Antagonist in it - and it’s not the easiest to pronounce.

I’m indifferent on [name]Millicent[/name], though I love nn [name]Milly[/name]. [name]Millicent[/name] sounds a bit too much to go by on a daily basis.

I wouldn’t say Ottillie anywhere near how you say it - ottuh-lee - and I find it a bit too fussy for my liking.

Woah [name]Ottilie[/name] is pronounced “Oh-[name]TILL[/name]-ee-uh!?” My world is shaken. It’s an excellent name, either way.
I like [name]Millicent[/name], despite her fustiness. Miniver too. Eccentric and delicate and old-ladylike.
[name]Antigone[/name]- very heavy association. I wouldn’t use it meself.

I had never given much thought to [name]Millicent[/name] until I met a little preschooler recently named [name]Millicent[/name] who went by [name]Millie[/name]. She was possibly the cutest 3 year old I have ever met. So happy and gregarious, not fussy or cranky at all. I first thought that [name]Millicent[/name] is a whole lotta old lady name for a little one but it is growing on me. That little girl changed my mind about it.

I like how [name]Ottilie[/name] looks but I am not sure about pronunciation.

I recognize the literary richness and history of [name]Antigone[/name] but I have a hard time getting past how negative it looks. Sorry.

Thank you everyone for your feedback!

I did agree that [name]Antigone[/name] wasn’t exactly usable until a brother became friends with a lovely girl named [name]Antigone[/name] and I fell in love with it all over again. ([name]Antigone[/name]'s brother is named [name]Atticus[/name].)

I’ve met an [name]Antigone[/name] before. [name]Said[/name] it a bit more like anne-tig-uh-nee than a strong “oh” sound in there. Called Tiggy. Didn’t seem unusable, still doesn’t seem worse than [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Eurydice[/name], [name]Isolde[/name], [name]Persephone[/name], [name]Jocasta[/name], or similar. It’s not really my style but not rampantly unusable?

I prefer Bellicent to [name]Millicent[/name] but [name]Millicent[/name] is more well-known so that might be an advantage. I’m fond of [name]Minerva[/name], but, well, I’m strange. Haha.

I dislike [name]Ottilie[/name], sorry. [name]Ottavia[/name] or [name]Octavia[/name] would be more appealing to me personally.
