I posted a while back about this name and got a negative response but I cant help but still think about it. I think that Arienne (ah-ree-EN) is super pretty but a lot of people said it sounds like [name_m]Aryan[/name_m] (which has white supremacy connotations) so do you think that they are too close? Overall what are your thoughts on Arienne?
I think Arienne, which evokes the elegance of [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] and the boldness of [name_f]Adriana[/name_f], would fit right into this naming climate if not for the white supremacist soundalike association. I had a classmate named Arienne, and people usually pronounced it like [name_m]Aryan[/name_m] until she corrected them, sometimes several times. She also had instances where upon pronouncing it, people spelled it as [name_m]Aryan[/name_m]. So, like [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] and a host of other names with a lovely sound, I think cultural ties render this one unusable.
My first though was “oh cute”, but followed up almost immediately with “oh, no, it would sound like [name_m]Aryan[/name_m]”, even before I read your comment about that issue.
To answer your question, I just don’t think Arienne is worth it. It is cute and trim and feels right with names like [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], but I think it would cause a lifetime of confusion and potential embarrassment. I think any name that stands to be confused with a word with serious negative ties is best avoided.
But what about a similar name, like [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f], [name_f]Adriana[/name_f], [name_f]Ariana[/name_f]/[name_f]Arianna[/name_f], or even [name_f]Ariadne[/name_f]? Or what about [name_u]Wren[/name_u] or [name_u]Eden[/name_u], to have a similar end sound?
My friends have an [name_f]Arielle[/name_f]. I personally dont like it because to me it sounds like an off saying of [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]. My mind also goes to the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid.
I like [name_f]Ariana[/name_f] more because it’s more common and no one will think of anything racial.
You could do Arienna? I think that would also solve it!
I
I prefer [name_f]Adrienne[/name_f], [name_f]Ariana[/name_f], or [name_u]Ariel[/name_u]/[name_f]Arielle[/name_f] to Arienne for the reason that has been mentioned.
Are you in [name_u]America[/name_u]? [name_m]Ah[/name_m]- is not the first pronunciation people would go with, unfortunately. I like the above poster’s idea about [name_f]Ariana[/name_f].
I pronounced it ah-ree-ehn and did not even think about [name_m]Aryan[/name_m] until your comment. I think it’s really pretty but I don’t know as it’s useable. What about Ariellie/Arielly pronounced like [name_f]Arielle[/name_f] but with and ee sound ending. I think it’s cool and useable.
