Thoughts on Artemis?

I’m really loving Artemis at the moment, so just curious as to what others think of the name? Also, what of Artemisia? Which name would you prefer?

I like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] - it has an interesting and distinctive sound and I like the ending and nickname potential.

[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] is nice too but I prefer [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]

I agree with what the pp says

I really like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]. It strikes me as a brave and distinctive choice. I also like [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] but feel it would be mispronounced a lot in Anglo cultures.

Agree with the PP.

I love the name, but for me it has been ruined by “It’s Always [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] in [name_u]Philadelphia[/name_u]”. For that reason, I prefer [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] - same cool factor, but more feminine and melodic

[name_m]Long[/name_m] time ago, when I didn’t know much about names, I thought [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is a boy’s name (I knew a guy named Artem). I had no idea that some ancient goddess is named [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]. But from there on I have always felt [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] is more feminine and a little more softer. I really like [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f].

I like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] on a boy, don’t care for it on a girl. So I definitely prefer [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] out of the two, for a girl.

I know [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] was a goddess but it sounds more like a masculine name. I am personally not fond of the name on either gender. Also not fond of [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f].

I find [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] very cool. I know many of them in all ages. Very pretty. [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] is beautiful but too frilly for my taste.

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] has long been one of my favorite names. I love the connection to the fierce goddess, as well as the flow and sounds. However, I have always preferred [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] on a girl, as I find it melodic and feminine but also strong. I’m also drawn the the Italian painter [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] Gentileschi as a namesake.

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is currently my second favourite girls’ name, so I definitely love her a lot haha. She’s strong, feisty, and feminine all rolled into one, and that’s what really got me. I also enjoy the mythology/goddess link and the facts she’s familiar but unusual and not overused. [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] is okay, but doesn’t have the same cool, tough feel that [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] has.

I know it’s a goddess/girls name, but I do find [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] more masculine. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f], it’s a big name but fits all ages. [name_f]Missy[/name_f] for a nn?

I love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]-- it’s a great name-- I had a childhood friend named this who went by [name_m]Artie[/name_m] as a nn-- very cute! I like [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] too, but it is often quite a mouthful. It does sound more feminine to me.

I know that originally [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] was a [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] but since the first place I ever heard was on a male TV character, Atremis [name_m]Gorden[/name_m], from the 1960’s show The [name_m]Wild[/name_m], [name_m]Wild[/name_m] [name_u]West[/name_u], I just can’t see on a girl.

BUT it is a name I love.

On the flip side, [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f]? Um, no. I don’t like it. Sorry.

I like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], and I definitely see it as a girl’s name. However, I’m not a fan of [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f].

Until about five minutes ago I didn’t know about the goddess [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]. I did think of the [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Fowl series which makes it solidly male for me. I don’t know how big those books were though- and people use unisex names all the time.

[name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] however feels more solid girl. I think I prefer it, but I generally don’t like unisex names. Both would be a brave choice with nickname potential.

I love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]! [name_m]How[/name_m] amazing would it be to share a name with a literal goddess? I don’t care for [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] though. [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is 100% girl to me (I cannot imagine it on a boy at all), so I wouldn’t add the unnecessary -ia for the sake of making it more feminine.

Thank you all for your replies. I’m still loving them both. I’m a bit worried about the flow of [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] with a surname that starts with S- (and includes a second S). Too hissy?
