Thoughts on Ashlyn or Athena?

[name_f]My[/name_f] husband came up with [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] but I’m so unsure! It’s really different and unusual for me. Is [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] weird? Also how would you spell it?

Also another name we’re thinking about is [name_f]Athena[/name_f] but I’m also unsure about it.

Welcome to Nameberry!

I adore [name_f]Athena[/name_f]! It’s a beautiful, strong name. [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is not really my style, but I don’t think it’s weird. I knew one growing up. I associate it with other -lyn ending names that are very popular so it’s not that out there in my mind. Subtle difference but I really like [name_f]Aisling[/name_f]/Ashling (pronounced ASH-ling).

It does! Thank you so much. I think I like ashlyn more but I believe my husband likes [name_f]Athena[/name_f] more. I use to work with animals and there are a lot of dogs named [name_f]Athena[/name_f] so that’s probably why I’m unsure

Athena is one of my favorites.

Ashlyn is kinda cool. I’m not familiar with it but I dont hate it. It seems like a fresh take on [name_u]Ashley[/name_u].

My vote would go to [name_f]Athena[/name_f] because I love that name but [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is spunky and I know so many Ashleys so I like that its a different approach.

Both are very pretty names, but I prefer [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f]! I’ve always liked [name_u]Ash[/name_u]- names for girls; [name_f]Aisling[/name_f] is on my UC  I’ve never met one either, which makes it even better imo

I think [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is lovely, sounds modern. I do prefer [name_f]Athena[/name_f] though, for it’s strong namesake.

I don’t find [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] weird at all. I heard it many times, and it’s has the trendy -lyn ending.
I love [name_f]Athena[/name_f]. It’s strong and bold and beautiful. And it’s more uncommon, if you’d like that. (Well, [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] isn’t popular either but it’s similar to [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] and the whole -lyn trend, so not as unique)

I love both. [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] has a beautiful meaning

Ashlyn is elegant and mystical

Athena feels more unusual than [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] and yet more classic. I like [name_f]Athena[/name_f]. [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is ok and it fits in with all the other -[name_u]Lyn[/name_u] names but I prefer [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Adelynn[/name_f] and [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f] to [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] or the Irish spelling [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f].

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] and [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] are two of my very favorite names. I most prefer the spelling [name_f]Aislinn[/name_f] for the latter, but [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is totally workable and lovely too and unless you are Irish/living in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], may be easier for people to spell and pronounce than any of the more “traditional” spellings. I don’t think either name is weird at all! I’ve actually come across two [name_f]Athena[/name_f]’s IRL and with the popularity of [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], I doubt many would even raise an eyebrow at [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] (depending on where you live of course).

Ashlyn reminds me of [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], a name I’m tired of. It doesn’t make much of an impression on me.
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] is one of my favourites, it ticks all of the boxes. It’s a little unusual, striking and very lovely.

Hi there! [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] is a pretty name, not my style really, but I do like nickname [name_u]Ash[/name_u] for a girl! I definitely prefer [name_f]Athena[/name_f] - it’s elegant but spunky! But I think both are sweet! X

Ashlyn is a really common name where Im from (southern us). Probably popped up when [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] was so popular. Its a nice name and that spelling makes sense to me. It might be a smidge dated? Unsure about this. [name_m]Ive[/name_m] never known an [name_f]Athena[/name_f] though Im familiar with the name. Both are lovely names.

Ashlyn is pretty! I know a few Athenas, it’s quite popular where I live, so I think I’d vote for [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f]!

Both are pretty cool names. I prefer [name_f]Athena[/name_f] a bit more cause [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] might have some spelling issues.

Ashlyn and [name_u]Ashley[/name_u] were really common when I was younger so [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f] feels slightly dated to the 90s and early 00s to me. I love [name_f]Athena[/name_f] though! It’s spunky and fresh!

Exactly my thoughts! Though I do like the name, it just lacks the sparkle that [name_f]Athena[/name_f] has! I vote [name_f]Athena[/name_f]

Ashlyn I don’t care for because so many other girl’s names end with -lyn right now. [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Adalyn[/name_f], [name_f]Braylyn[/name_f], [name_f]Caylyn[/name_f], [name_u]Brooklyn[/name_u], [name_f]Madelyn[/name_f]…etc. I don’t feel it stands out enough.

Athena I like more, it’s definitely unique. You have to be prepared for the comparisons to the greek goddess, though. I know the name is becoming more popular but a god/goddess name can be very hard to wear, and the stuff from their legends may not always be things you like. [name_f]Athena[/name_f] has also been identified as the goddess of war, an association you may not love.

There were two Ashlynns in my school. It’s not weird at all, an anglicization of an Irish name. Despite their spellings, I’d stick to [name_f]Ashlyn[/name_f], it’s simpler.

Athena is a good name with a strong namesake. The lack of nicknames could be a concern (only one that comes to mind is [name_f]Thea[/name_f]), also its rapid growth in popularity.

I’m sorry to bother you about this but how do you highlight names??
