Thoughts on Atticus

[name_m]Atticus[/name_m] has been a long time favourite of mine, however, since Go [name_m]Set[/name_m] a Watchman; people’s opinions on [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] has changed and apparently the name isn’t as desirable anymore. What do you guys think? I have a lot of bookish/writer friends and I’m not sure if I should be worried about what people think.

Honestly I don’t think it’s an issue.
There are several other people named [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], both in fiction and reality, and the name is popular enough for the [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] asociation not to matter that much. Plus, I’m almost always of the opinion that if you love it and it wouldn’t cause the child any problems you should go for it!

I’m not a fan of the name anyway, although I think [name_u]Kit[/name_u] is a sweet nickname. I’ve not heard of [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u], but personally I don’t think that should stop you.

I don’t think the name has shed its [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] connections. [name_f]Nor[/name_f] should it! I think [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] is still an excellent namesake, one of the greatest characters in literature. If you love the name, go for it.

(As for bookish/writer friends, any literary type worth their salt knows that the publishing of Go [name_m]Set[/name_m] A Watchman was against the author’s wishes, and the manuscript wasn’t finalised by her either, so that [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] isn’t the “real” one anyway.)

It’s very To Kill A Mockingbird to me but in a good way.

Those are my thoughts exactly! Thank you

I completely agree with @srudolph. I haven’t read either book, but I know of the character and that’s he’s major association with [name_m]Atticus[/name_m], although I more think of a character from Downton [name_u]Abbey[/name_u]. I say [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] is usable and an awesome choice!

I don’t like it. However, I can understand the appeal and feel that the existence of Go [name_m]Set[/name_m] a Watchman should be ignored for reasons already expressed in this thread.

I definitely think that [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] is connected to [name_m]Atticus[/name_m] [name_u]Finch[/name_u] (and will be forever, if not at least a long time) but I agree that it’s not a bad thing.

It’s true that Go [name_m]Set[/name_m] a Watchman was never supposed to be published but [name_u]Harper[/name_u] [name_u]Lee[/name_u] had little control in her old age over it. Essentially, that was not [name_u]Finch[/name_u]'s character the way she had developed it.

I definitely understand your hesitations but I think that most people will associate the name with To Kill a Mockingbird, not the other book.

I do think it’s a cool name! On the trendy side but that isn’t a necessarily bad thing.
