This is a name I’ve loved for a long time, in part because of my love for The Neverending [name_u]Story[/name_u], but also just because of the sound. It’s like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] (which I also adore), but less common.
It’s not a name that gets much love on here though so I just wanted to ask:
What do you think of the name [name_m]Bastian[/name_m]? What sort of a name is it to you?
In my quest to name this baby I’m going through my list and attempting to get a sense of how people perceive the names I love, just so I don’t find myself surprised by something once I’ve already named him.
I much prefer [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] to [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]. It has a lovely strong sound to it but also a sort of carefree and gentle feel. I slightly prefer the -tien spelling personally because i looks like less of a nickname for sebastian. That would be my only concern is that people would assume the full name was sebastian or would hear sebastian everytime you introduced him. But, that’s easily corrected and people would get used to it. Honestly, I say go for it!
I prefer [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], but [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] is still very handsome. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] feels more classic, whereas [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] to me feels more rough and tumble. [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] plays [name_m]Rugby[/name_m], [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] plays American Football.
I think some people might assume it is a nickname for [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], but I don’t think that’s the end of the world - there are loads of ‘nickname names’ in the world and people are fine with them!
I know [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] is a normal likable name but I cant dissociate it from the [name_m]Little[/name_m] Mermaid crab. I was a kid in the 90s so maybe this is why. I can almost see [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] as an olympic ice skater, but not an American ice skater. I fully admit I have a weird stereotype of [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and for me [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] is the same vibe… except that I would fear teasing related to a very close word. All this said I can understand the appeal for someone else.
I like [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] a lot! It feels nicely European, but wearable elsewhere. The vibe is very cool and sweet, and I can’t think of anything negative to say about it.
I like [name_m]Bastian[/name_m]!!! I know a little [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] (just [name_m]Bastian[/name_m]) whose little brother is [name_m]Caspian[/name_m]
I love [name_m]Bastian[/name_m]. You’re right that it’s like [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], but somehow hasn’t at all caught on in popularity. I find it romantic & dashing, artsy yet still strong & masculine. I feel like it may get misspelled or mispronounced occasionally, but worth it for such a cool name. I love the nn Bash too. Some people say ‘[name_m]Bas[/name_m]’ or ‘[name_m]Baz[/name_m]’ as a nn, it’s more Bash-tee-in, right? So, Bash makes more sense.
So I’ve never really heard [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] before so I’m not quite sure how to pronounce it. Is it really just [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] without the [name_m]Seb[/name_m]?
I will say looking at it I’m rather turned off from it visually as the first four letters remind me of a rather not nice word that also starts with those same letters.
I love [name_m]Bastian[/name_m] as a slightly more rugged alternative to [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], which can sometimes have a bit of a smarmy vibe to me - probably because it’s used for so many thinly written male protagonists in romance novels and soap operas. [name_m]Bastian[/name_m], on the other hand, in addition to the lovely Neverending [name_u]Story[/name_u] reference, is also a homonym for bastion, which refers to a fortress. That might be where my feeling comes from that this is a stronger, slightly edgier, less sleek variant compared to [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]’s smooth charm. [name_m]Seb[/name_m] is the diplomat, while [name_m]Bas[/name_m] is the warrior.
