Thoughts on Coya?

DH and I couldn’t agree on a nickname for [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and then I remembered a congresswoman I had read about named [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] who went by Coya. I think it has the same kind of charm as [name_f]Cora[/name_f] while being a little bit lighter sounding and Coya Knutson lends it a bit of history and heft.

What do you think of it and how would you pronounce it?

I really like it actually! It’s really fun - it kind of reminds me of [name_u]Calypso[/name_u] and [name_f]Maya[/name_f] mixed together. I would pronounce it a coy-uh.

As a nickname for [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f], it’s unexpected, cute and funky! I like it! I’d pronounce it like coy-uh (coy rhyming with toy)

I love it! It’s cool and cute at the same time, and I like that it’s not too far of a stretch as a nickname for [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f].

I would pronounce it like coy-uh

This piqued my interest because I have the Japanese ‘Koya’ on my list. Though the intended gender of Koya is masculine, I prefer the name on a female. So I love your thought of Coya as a nickname for [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]. What a cool idea!

I pronounce it “coy-uh” the same way as the previous posters. I especially like how the sound of Coya has a strong likeness to [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f]. The letters follow the same order as they do in [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] so there’s a fairly obvious connection to the full name.

I think Coya is adorable! I would pronounce it coy-uh, same as PPs.

I think it’s fine as a nickname. I would pronounce it just like the word “coy” with an extra syllable. Or is it meant to be more like COH-ya (similar to [name_f]Zoya[/name_f])?

Coya is cute, but [name_f]Nell[/name_f]/[name_f]Nellie[/name_f] seems more intuitive

I knew a girl named [name_u]Sequoia[/name_u] who went by Coya, (koi-ah) although I have no idea if that is how she spelled the nickname. I think it’s cute, stands on its own, and not confusing as far as pronunciation. ([name_m]How[/name_m] else would you pronounce it besides KOI-ah? Are you worried people would say Ko-yah? I don’t get the impression that would be a common mistake).
