Thoughts on Dorothy?

What are everyone’s general thoughts on [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]? I’m not sure about the name.

What are some good nicknames for it? Would it work better as a first name or a middle name? Does it automatically make you think of The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m]? Is it too “old” sounding? What does the name make you think of and how do you picture a child with this name?

I love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]! The NN that I have heard are [name_f]Dottie[/name_f], [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Doro[/name_f]. I love love love [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]. I and pregnant with a little girl right now and wish DH was on board with having a little [name_f]Dot[/name_f] but sadly no :(. And no I do not think of the [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m].

One of my best friends has a little niece (she’s 5) named [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] and she is a sweet, girly girl so I picture her when I think of the name. My mind doesn’t automatically go to Wizard of Oz and I’m not sure if my friend’s niece has gotten associated with it but the connection will probably still be there which isn’t a bad thing. I don’t find the name too old-sounding and I think it’s quite sweet to hear whether it’s a first or middle name. I love [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] as nicknames for [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f].

I adore [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]. She has such a fun, spunky sound, she ages beautifully, everyone knows how to spell and say it, etc. I could go on and on about her. I don’t immediately think of Kansas, but the association is there, in a good way. The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m] adds a bit more retro charm to a wonderful name. I can picture [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] on any child, but particularly on a spunky, freckly little girl with curly red hair and big brown eyes. [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] nn [name_f]Dot[/name_f] would be the very smart, very mischievous friend: a bit of a prankster, very loyal, very willful, with a very strong personality. She wouldn’t do anything by halves and is very honest. I love the name.

I feel that [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] is still slightly stuffy, but I think she’ll be fine in a year or two. I love the nickname options of [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Dotty[/name_f]! However, I do prefer [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f]. It currently does make me think of The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m] straight away, but that’s because I’m currently reading a book called [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] Must Die, which is sort of a sequel/retelling to the aforementioned story. However, before beginning this book, I didn’t think of The [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m] straight away, but even when I did, it’s not a bad connection.

I think it is too clunky, not in a good way (sorry). [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] are cute but I just find the formal name unattractive. I also had a teacher in nursing school who I really hated who was named [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] so maybe I can’t get over the association. It has been widely enough used though that the [name_m]Wizard[/name_m] of [name_m]Oz[/name_m] isn’t the first association that comes to mind.

I picture an old lady from my church, and the phrase “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore.” Not a huge fan. Maybe [name_f]Doris[/name_f], [name_f]Isadora[/name_f], [name_f]Edith[/name_f]?

I think it still sounds dated. [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought was the character on “[name_u]Golden[/name_u] Girls!” But I think this type of name is working its way back into the lexicon, so it will probably sound fresher in a year or two. The nn [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] much improves it to me because I can easily picture that on a young girl. I like [name_f]Dorothea[/name_f] better than [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f], plus it lends itself not only to [name_f]Dot[/name_f] and [name_f]Dottie[/name_f] but [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as well.

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it. I know a [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] (5). [name_f]My[/name_f] chicken is called that too.

I love [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]! I can totally see a little girl pull this off especially with the nickname [name_f]Dot[/name_f]

Thank you for the replies on [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]! It definitely helps my view of the name and I love the nn [name_f]Dottie[/name_f]/[name_f]Dotty[/name_f] for a young child and [name_f]Dot[/name_f] or just [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f] for when she’s older.
