DH and I are trying to find boys names for future children, and we’re torn on [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]. I really like it as a whole, and DH likes [name_m]Ed[/name_m], but is it too dated? Is [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] ready for a comeback or has it gone the way of [name_m]Elmer[/name_m]? (So far gone it’ll never be usable on a baby boy)
Numbers-wise, [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] is still in the top 400 in the U.S. (as it has been since the 19th century), but it’s been on a downward trend the last 10 years or so. Based on that alone, you could say it’s somewhat evergreen but not so stylish right now.
Personally, I don’t find it as dated as some other old-fashioned names ([name_m]Alfred[/name_m] and [name_m]Herbert[/name_m], for example), but I think [name_m]Edmond[/name_m]/[name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Edwin[/name_m] and even [name_m]Edward[/name_m] feel fresher. That said, [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] has some great literary cred and a classic rock connection, so I think it could work as a cool, offbeat alternative to the other [name_m]Ed[/name_m]- names.
I like [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]–I think of the Wuthering Heights character or [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] [name_m]Allen[/name_m] [name_u]Poe[/name_u], so a Victorian gothic feel. It’s definitely usable and I think will age well. I think it’d be super cute on a little boy!
I don’t see any problem with [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]. I think that it would go really well with [name_m]Charles[/name_m] [name_m]Joseph[/name_m].
I love [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]!
I like [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] in theory, but I don’t think it’s really ready for a comeback. Not like [name_m]Elmer[/name_m], more like [name_f]Agnes[/name_f]- it’s coming back into fashion, but it’s not quite there yet
I like [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] I think it has the clunk-fresh feeling (which I obviously love). It is a name my hubby really likes for our little one too
I like it. I’ve met several young Hispanic men and one young man from the [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] Coast named [name_m]Edgar[/name_m]. It doesn’t feel like an old man name to me. If [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] and [name_m]Arthur[/name_m] are alright, I don’t see why [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] isn’t.
I love [name_m]Ed[/name_m] names. I have to admit that [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] is currently my least favourite, but I will probably come around to it eventually. I understand that it is actually in the top 1000 in USA, making it more popular than [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], which is not. Here in the UK, [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] is in the top 1000. I personally feel that all of the [name_m]Ed[/name_m] names are going to be popular. I currently go back and forth between [name_m]Edmund[/name_m] and [name_m]Edwin[/name_m], as personal favourites, and do love [name_m]Edward[/name_m], also. I also adore [name_f]Edwina[/name_f], and actually feel that this is ready for a comeback. I mainly associate [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] with [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] [name_m]Linton[/name_m] in “Wuthering Heights”. It is very usable.
I’ve known two kids named [name_m]Edgar[/name_m], and it was great! Their names didn’t really seem all that odd or old when being used in real-life, so I would say it is very usable.
I highly dislike it. I hear egg.
I think [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] is refreshing and perfectly usable for a modern boy.
I like it. I think it’s very strong sounding and would pair well with other names.
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_m]Edgar[/name_m], but mostly for artsy associations.
“Creme de la creme ala [name_m]Edgar[/name_m].” Is my first thought, and literally haven’t watched the movie in years! I actually don’t think of [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] [name_m]Allan[/name_m] [name_u]Poe[/name_u], I think of him more as just [name_u]Poe[/name_u]. Not a fan, much prefer other [name_m]Ed[/name_m]- names, [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Edward[/name_m], ect.
[name_m]Edgar[/name_m] is fantastic!
I’ve always liked [name_m]Edgar[/name_m] and I think it’s quite usable. The only one I’ve ever personally known was a boy on my school bus when I was in elementary school, so since I only knew him as a kid the name has never felt old-fashioned to me.
Old thread, but I love the name!
