I asked some questions about [name_f]Elsi[/name_f] last week but I’d like to hear general thoughts. It’s an Amharic girls name and I have recently learned it is pronounced “ILL-sigh”. Thoughts? Is it usable in the US?
I’d assume it’s an alternative spelling of [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], and I can’t find any info online about it being an Amharic name. Nonetheless, it is a pretty name and I think it is really usable. Maybe you’d have to correct people a few times buy if you’re okay with that you’re good to go.
I think it looks really pretty! I like its minimalistic feel.
The pronunciation definitely wouldn’t be my default, though. It’s doable if you don’t mind occasional corrections imo
There aren’t a lot of online databases of Amharic names at all unfortunately. SO is Ethiopian and confirmed that it is a name used there so I’m going off of that! I believe it is originally a diminutive of the name Elsabeth that is also used in Ethiopia, but Elsi is also used on its own
I also fact check any Amharic names I found by searching “(insert name) Addis” or “(insert name) Addis Ababa” on facebook to find actual people in Ethiopia with the name, and I found at least 50 with the name Elsi! This might be creepy but it works
I like [name_f]Elsi[/name_f], cute and prefer it to Elsie/Elsey. You would probably have to correct people on pronunciation all the time. Maybe spell it Ilsi? Ylsi?
Very usable.
