For a very long time my husband and I have loved the name [name]Evelyn[/name] [name]Judy[/name] ([name]Judy[/name], after grandma) but I don’t think I could stand using such a popular name. [name]Every[/name] time I see the name [name]Evangeline[/name] I just love it so much, but I don’t like that its a Disney name. So I kind of meshed them together to make [name]Evelene[/name]. What do you think? Does it sound too made up?
It’s pretty; my friend’s friend is named E v e l i e n and pronounces it the same as [name]Evelene[/name]. I believe she was a foreign exchange student from Belgium. I think E v e l i e n looks prettier, but both names have a lovely sound.
When I first saw the name, I thought it would be pronounced as [name]Eve[/name], and then the first syllable of [name]Lena[/name] ([name]EEVE[/name]-leen), but it doesn’t look like that’s your intended pronunciation.
I actually like the idea of combining those two names, but only spelled as [name]Evaline[/name]. In your spelling, not only is there potential mispronunciation, it’s visually unappealing to me (way too many E’s).
And honestly, if the Disney reference is what’s putting you off of [name]Evangeline[/name], I wouldn’t let it hold you back. I had to look up the character to see what movie it came from, and I’m pretty sure she’s a minor character. The first [name]Evangeline[/name] I think of is the heroine of A Tale of Acadie.
Thanks for the thoughts on spelling, I think you guys are right. Now that you point out the [name]EEVE[/name]-leen pronunciation I can’t not see it lol
Yea, I didn’t even know that [name]Evangeline[/name] was “Disney” name. It’s on the frilly side but it’s not like you’re using [name]Cinderella[/name] or even [name]Aurora[/name] or [name]Tiana[/name].
If you like [name]Evelene[/name], I’d use it as a nn for [name]Evangeline[/name], because [name]Evelene[/name] is just too made up imo.
I think it’s lovely! I used to have [name]Evelina[/name] (ev-ah-lee-nah) on my list, for the nn [name]Evie[/name], and I think [name]Eveline[/name] (this spelling!) is lovely, too. I’m not terribly keen on [name]Evelene[/name] (it just looks made-up and trendy, whereas [name]Eveline[/name] is a legitimate name, although I’m not sure its history) or [name]Evaline[/name] (I instinctively separate it into [name]Eva[/name] and line, so it’s EE-vah-line, not EV-uh-leen, which I think is so much prettier). I like the pp’s suggestion of Evel!en, though!
I agree with the pp, though–if we excluded every name that came from a Disney movie, you’d exclude a lot of names! I would think more people would think of [name]Evangeline[/name] [name]Lilly[/name] (and [name]Henry[/name] Wadsworth [name]Longfellow[/name]'s poem) long before they’d think of the Disney character. Wasn’t she a moon, or a star, or something? I think the connection is actually quite beautiful.
I once met a Finnish girl named [name]Eeva[/name]-[name]Leena[/name] pronounced like ([name]Ava[/name]-[name]Layna[/name])–I love that pronunciation best. [name]Evangeline[/name] is about the only ‘E’ name I really like.
