Thoughts on Fiona

We are expecting our 3rd child. Oldest [name_f]Sister[/name_f] is [name_f]Violet[/name_f], Brother is [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]. [name_f]Violet[/name_f] was one of 3 in her preschool class in our very small midwest town. I feared it was becoming too popular when I named her but it was my Grandma’s name so we went with it. I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] for many reasons.
[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Apple[/name_f] is my favorite singer ever. My Husband wants a Gaelic name to honor his Scottish roots. I don’t think it will be too popular but I worry about 2 things

  1. The nickname [name_f]FiFi[/name_f]- BARF
  2. Shrek association.
    Thoughts on [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]?

1: I wouldn’t worry about people calling her [name_f]Fifi[/name_f]. If you always introduce her as [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], she probably won’t be called [name_f]Fifi[/name_f].

2: I didn’t immediately think of Shrek (not at all, until you mentioned it). I wouldn’t worry too much about the association. It’s not like calling your child [name_f]Katniss[/name_f] or [name_f]Beyonce[/name_f], or another one-person only name.

I really like [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. It’s not too popular, but people have heard of it, making spelling/pronunciation easier. It’s very pretty but not frilly, and has a lot of spunk.

My first thought is shrek everytime I hear [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].

never even considered [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] as a nn. I don’t know where you got it from, but it doesn’t seem like such an obvious choice that would come to people imo. [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is quite a short name anyway so I don’t think it would get a nn at all. I do however think only of Shrek when I hear it

[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is my favorite name! I think it would be a lovely choice and sounds good with the sibling names, too. I vote yes times a million :). Regarding your concerns:

  1. I’ve actually only ever heard the nickname “Fi” for [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], and I’ve only ever heard it when someone’s saying something quickly (ex: “Fi, where’s your coat?”). I don’t think you should be worried about [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] happening, and it definitely shouldn’t stop you from using a fabulous name.

  2. I love the Shrek films and don’t even associate the name with them. There are so many people in so many movies, it would be pretty impossible to try to find one that doesn’t have ANY association for ANYONE. But regardless, [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] in Shrek is an awesome character. Her whole arc revolves around embracing who you are and the importance of inner beauty, and of loving people who accept you for you. I think that’s a pretty great association!

I know a [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] so don’t immediately think of Shrek. It’s not a bad association though as PP pointed out. I like the name a lot and think it works with your other kids’ names.

As you can see in my signature, I adore [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. I think it’s a very lovely, sweet name and personally the shrek association doesn’t bother me at all. Also [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] in the Shrek movie is a good character anyway.

[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] can have other nickname (or no nickname), if you don’t want [name_f]Fifi[/name_f].

It’s lovely and goes well with [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. I really doubt anyone would call her [name_f]Fifi[/name_f]. And I didn’t think of Shrek immediately but like PP pointed out, she’s a great character. I think you should go for it!

I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]! I don’t think the nickname or the Shrek assoiciation should be a problem.

I think even with the Shrek association [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a lovely name! If you’re unsure, you could always opt for [name_f]Flora[/name_f]!

I’ve always liked [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Apple[/name_f] too and she was my main association with the name for many years so I think it’s great. I don’t think of Shrek, but even if some people do it’s really not a terrible association. I also think that since [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is not an uncommon name outside of pop culture (unlike, for example, [name_f]Katniss[/name_f]) it’s not a big deal and a lot of people’s thoughts probably won’t even go there.

I don’t think [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] should be a big concern either. If anyone calls her by a nickname it would likely just be Fi.

I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]!

I think [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] goes really well with [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]! I really like the name [name_f]Fiona[/name_f], I have known a few (of various ages from mid-thirties to toddler) and none have been called by a nickname that I know of. Because of my age, I think of [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] [name_f]Apple[/name_f] before [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] from Shrek

I’m a little biased, but [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a great name! That’s what we named our daughter who was born in [name_f]April[/name_f]. She’s now 8 months old, and I have only had 2-3 people mention Shrek lightheartedly. And [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a pretty kick-butt princess, for what it’s worth.

I also hated the nickname [name_f]Fifi[/name_f], but the only person that really calls her that is her 6 year old uncle, which makes it cute. Almost everyone calls her “Fi” ([name_u]Fee[/name_u]), Fi-Bug, etc. [name_u]Haven[/name_u]'t met another [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] yet, although we’ve heard of a couple…all different ages.

We too, like you, wanted something with Scottish or Irish roots, a little less common…I think it fits well with your sibset. Good luck!

[name_f]Fiona[/name_f] is a name I’ve always disliked, but I am also of the opinion that if you like it you should do it. Unfortunately knowing very few Fionas in real life the first thing that comes to mind is Shrek

I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]. It strikes me as warm, happy, and intriguing all in one. I don’t think of Shrek immediately, and I’ve seen it many times. If my son were a girl he likely would have been a [name_f]Fiona[/name_f].

Thanks everyone! My 2 fears came from telling my [name_m]SIL[/name_m] and she said “Like Shrek?” and telling my friend and she said “oh [name_f]Fifi[/name_f]!”
But I just saw on nameberry that it is a cool name for 2017 or something like that. So thanks for the encouragement.

I love [name_f]Fiona[/name_f]! [name_f]Fiona[/name_f] will be on the short list for another girl (if hell freezes over and I have another, lol).
