Thoughts on Frederick?

No time crunch, just started TTC these days.

Top contenders for boys names are [name]Robert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] or [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name] (I know, the creativity is through the roof…haha. I like very strong, simple, classic boys names.)

DH is [name]Robert[/name] with no middle name, [name]Frederick[/name] is for my grandfather who raised me and was very very special.

This brings me to my questions on [name]Frederick[/name].

  1. What are you perceptions of the name [name]Frederick[/name]? Ready for revival? Still a little crusty for lack of a better word?

  2. [name]Frederick[/name] as a fn, yay or nay? Would you love to meet a little [name]Frederick[/name] or is it much better left to the middle spot?

  3. Nicknames. Obviously theres [name]Fred[/name]/[name]Freddy[/name]/[name]Freddie[/name], [name]Derick[/name] maybe, I’ve heard [name]Rick[/name]/[name]Ricky[/name]. Which do you like? Any others you can think of?

  4. I guess the overarching question is, which do you prefer? [name]Robert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] or [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name]? [name]Sister/name if he had them would be [name]Penelope[/name] and/or [name]Josephine[/name] with 1 syl middles.

I like [name]Frederick[/name], but not [name]Fred[/name], [name]Freddy[/name]. [name]Rick[/name] is ok. [name]Frederick[/name] sounds sophisticated to me, while the nicknames not so much. [name]Robert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] sounds just a tad smoother to me, but both orders work well. Would you call him by his first or middle if you name him [name]Robert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name]? He would have to deal with the problems of having the same first name as dad or the confusion of going by his middle name. DH has the same first name as his dad but has always been called by his middle. He wishes they had just named him the name they intended to call him by, but would have hated to be a [name]Junior[/name].

I really REALLY love [name]Frederick[/name]! I love that it has such special meaning for you…I think it’s a strong, handsome classic, and totally ready for revival! I would love to meet a little [name]Frederick[/name]!

([name]Frederick[/name] has been on my long-list of maybe-names for some time, and if I ever have a son, his middle name will definitely be [name]Robert[/name], so maybe I’m biased!)

Anyway, I think both combinations are nice, but I think [name]Frederick[/name] is better in the front spot for 3 reasons: 1 - it’s more distinctive than [name]Robert[/name], and sounds a little fresher. 2 - I think it’s nice for a son to have a different first name than his father…less confusion! I think having dad’s name in the middle spot is a great choice though! 3 - it flows better!

@kittybitter, [name]Glad[/name] you think both versions flow okay! If we used [name]Robert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] he wouldnt go by his middle. DH doesnt use any nn, so he would use [name]Robbie[/name], [name]Rob[/name], R.F., I recently kind of fell in love with [name]Hobbes[/name] as an old nn for [name]Robert[/name] (cartoon tiger aside, I think its adorable on a child) so I’d love to use that.

@claireelise, Yay, so happy [name]Frederick[/name] has some fans! My husband is the one who loves the idea of using his name, but I’m with you that it makes life so much easier to have it in the middle spot! I’d just need to get him on board for [name]Frederick[/name] as a fn…at least I have, well, at least 10 months!

As a whole I like frederick, but I hate the nicknames for it. [name]Fred[/name], or [name]Freddie[/name] are ugly to me.

I love the name [name]Frederick[/name], because I adore the nn [name]Fritz[/name]. So, so cute and strong!

I [name]LOVE[/name] the full name [name]Frederick[/name]! It’s a classy and sophisticated name. I am not crazy about the nn [name]Fred[/name] (rather crusty), but the nn [name]Rick[/name] is GREAT! It could work as a first name, and would be a 10-star middle name. On the current T.V. series i[name]Carly[/name], there is a very likeable, cute teenage boy named [name]Freddie[/name]. The name seems perfect for his character.

The question of [name]Robert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] or [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name] will largely depend on your last name, imo. [name]How[/name] many syllables? Would [name]Robert[/name] go by [name]Robert[/name] or a nn? I like the nn [name]Rick[/name] much better than [name]Rob[/name] or [name]Bob[/name].

I love [name]Frederick[/name]! My special great gpa was named [name]Fred[/name], so I’ve thought about it for the next boy. I like [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name] best, would be thrilled to meet a little [name]Frederick[/name]. I actually like the nns [name]Fred[/name] and [name]Freddie[/name] best. There’s that cute little British actor [name]Freddie[/name] Highmore to kind of freshen it up. I also had an uncle who went by Freed, which I think was a nn for [name]Frederick[/name] too, and he was such a special man, I’ve considered it too! Good luck.

[name]Fritz[/name] and Freed are definitely cuter to me than [name]Fred[/name] or [name]Freddie[/name]. (Although I’m glad to hear their are some younger people–actor and character–using [name]Freddie[/name]. Maybe it could grow on me.) Thanks!!

Nicknames are definitely the biggest stumbling block since I have a hard time imagining a little boy would always go by [name]Frederick[/name] full name. My grandfather was [name]Fred[/name] for work, but he was [name]Skipper[/name] as a kid and [name]Skip[/name] as an adult (So I guess his parents didnt like [name]Freddie[/name] either). Does anyone know a [name]Frederick[/name] who goes by [name]Frederick[/name]?

Thanks for all the great input, keep it coming!

I personally love [name]Fredrick[/name] for a fn, i had a friend named [name]Fredrick[/name] he had the brightest red hair i had ever seen and so everyone called him [name]Red[/name] because of f"[name]RED[/name]"rick.

Fredrick Robert doesn’t sound bad at all but it is more last name dependent

Fisk? But i do love Freddie!
Also i like making mns out of just letters in the name too so C.K. or D.K. maybe?

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Frederick[/name], and [name]Fred[/name] or [name]Freddie[/name] as nicknames. I’m a teacher (preK) and I find that most of my students do not go by traditional nicknames, but the full name, such as [name]William[/name], [name]Daniel[/name], [name]Nicholas[/name], [name]Matthew[/name], etc.

I actually do like [name]Frederick[/name] but I think [name]Freddie[/name] is a cute nn (maybe because of i[name]Carly[/name]…lol). [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name] would get my vote.

What about [name]Rupert[/name], the german variation of [name]Robert[/name]?

[name]Rupert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] sounds really nice.
I personally think that [name]Frederick[/name] sounds a little stale paired with [name]Robert[/name], but perhaps it’s better with the fresher and less used but still classic [name]Rupert[/name]. That way your husband and son won’t have exactly the same name and you won’t have to say “[name]Robert[/name] the elder” or “[name]Robert[/name] the younger”. You might simply give your son a nickname like [name]Robbie[/name] and avoid that problem.

All in all, choose names that you like and have a special meaning to you. With a such classic names and no “unique” name spellings you really can’t go wrong. Best of luck!

I’m so glad you posted this question! I am pregnant with #2 (although still in 1st trimester) and I can’t help thinking of names already…

I absolutely [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] but feel so conflicted about using it. Is it too old and dusty? Would it raise eyebrows? Or is it a classic name that is ready for revival?

It has been helpful to read other people’s thoughts about this. I don’t know if I am brave enough to take the plunge and use [name]Frederick[/name] (I really don’t care much for [name]Fred[/name] or [name]Freddie[/name] as nicknames), but I think I would have serious remorse if I didn’t use it. As it is, I feel slight pangs of envy when I meet other little Fredericks. It doesn’t happen often, although it does occasionally. I live in Germany.

I think [name]Frederick[/name] would go so well with my daughter’s name ([name]Louisa[/name]). I guess we’ll just have to see if this one is a boy…

Anyway, to the original poster, good luck TTC! And to everyone else, thanks for your comments.

Sorry, I just wanted to follow up post because I realized I made my reply all about me! I’m sorry!!!

To the original poster, I think [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name] sounds nice, but I personally wouldn’t shorten it to a nickname, but that’s my personal preference. I could definitely imagine a little boy going by [name]Frederick[/name] without a nickname.

I have to say, I also like the suggestion of [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Rupert[/name]. Very cute!

Anyway, [name]Frederick[/name] gets a big thumbs up from me. It’s a great classic name in my opinion! Good luck to you!

My vote is for [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Rupert[/name]. I love [name]Frederick[/name] as a full name and the pp suggestion of [name]Fritz[/name] as a nn.

[name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name], with the nickname [name]Rick[/name]…

I want to like [name]Rupert[/name] so badly because I know it works a bit better with [name]Frederick[/name]. Unfortunately, I cant say it without thinking of the teddy bear on Family [name]Guy[/name]. I hate when theres that association you cant shake!

I’m so happy to learn theres an i[name]Carly[/name] character with the name! Somehow that gives me a sense that it wouldnt be seen with too much of a raised eyebrow… I think I’d probably try using the name in full and just know I had some nns in mind if it got tiresome, or if he wanted options later he wouldnt be limited to [name]Fred[/name].

klh1980: [name]Glad[/name] I could help! I think [name]Frederick[/name] and [name]Louisa[/name] are lovely together! I’m glad youve met a few little Fredericks and think he could get by without a nn most of the time.

@lorijohnson: I [name]LOVE[/name] the image of “baked puddings in an age of sorbet.” My taste in boys names is definitely baked pudding.

Thank you thank you all!

I think I like [name]Frederick[/name]. It isn’t really my style, but I think it’s cute and would age well. I really think if I ran across a little [name]Frederick[/name], I would smile! He would fit in well with all the little Arthurs, Walters, and Augusts these days.

As for nicknames, my all-time favorite is [name]Fritz[/name], which is darling! [name]Freddie[/name] is also cute. I really don’t like [name]Derick[/name] or [name]Rick[/name]/[name]Ricky[/name] at all.

I HIGHLY prefer [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name] to [name]Robert[/name] [name]Frederick[/name]. I really dislike the name [name]Robert[/name], and I don’t like any of its nicknames. I also think that [name]Frederick[/name] is the perfect vintage/quirky name to go with [name]Penelope[/name] and [name]Josephine[/name].

I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Frederick[/name], and [name]Freddy[/name] sounds so cute to me. I was actually just thinking about how much I loved this name a few days ago. Seriously, use it. [name]Frederick[/name] [name]Robert[/name] is a nice combination, better than putting [name]Robert[/name] first [name]IMO[/name].
