My mom suggested [name]Gabriella[/name] last night to me which I thought was just ew. But I’ve been thinking about it and kind of like [name]Gabrielle[/name] nn [name]Gabby[/name]. But it’s SO not my normal style…wondering what people think of this name? Pretty/cheesy/overdone/etc?? Any feedback. I feel like my brain may be going to mush from all the baby name obsessing and I just don’t trust myself anymore!! ahah
I like [name]Gabrielle[/name]. But I don’t like [name]Gabby[/name] at all, in fact [name]Gabby[/name] is my main problem with considering it.
I like the feminizations of angel names: [name]Gabrielle[/name], [name]Arielle[/name], [name]Raphaela[/name], [name]Raziela[/name], Katriela, etc. I wouldn’t call [name]Gabrielle[/name] my favourite but it IS probably one of the most classic and well-known of them, and fairly straightfoward to spell.
I like [name]Gabrielle[/name] a lot! Better than [name]Gabriella[/name], although I do love both. I really love [name]Ella[/name]/[name]Bella[/name]/[name]Ari[/name]/[name]Arie[/name]/[name]Elle[/name] as nicknames, too, but lately I’ve really come around to [name]Gabby[/name]! I think it’s really cute. I do think [name]Gabrielle[/name]'s much more mainstream than your daughter’s name, though. [name]Don[/name]'t know if that bothers you. I think Mhairi and [name]Gabrielle[/name]/[name]Gabby[/name] are cute together, though.
I like [name]Gabrielle[/name], but prefer [name]Gabriella[/name], ideally spelled [name]Gabriela[/name].
I didn’t like the nn [name]Gabby[/name] until I met the most gorgeous, and very lovely, 3 year old nicknamed [name]Gabby[/name]. She was so dynamic, and mature, she seemed more like 5. Calling her [name]Gabby[/name] made me like the sound of it more.
I don’t like [name]Gabriella[/name]…I don’t like when the name has that ella type ending…too princessy feeling. I was going to ask if [name]Gabrielle[/name] sounded silly w/ Mhairi b/c they’re not similar. But I do also think [name]Ellie[/name] would be a cute nickname for [name]Gabrielle[/name]. Mhairi and [name]Ellie[/name] is cute. I like [name]Gabby[/name] too though. I’m due [name]December[/name] 23rd, hence the [name]Gabrielle[/name] idea. I’m not fond of most [name]Christmas[/name] style names but this one is growing on me.
I don’t really like [name]Gabrielle[/name], to be honest. I hate [name]Gabby[/name] and [name]Gabrielle[/name] feels frilly and annoying to me. I would vastly prefer something simpler like [name]Elle[/name] or [name]Brie[/name]. [name]Just[/name] my personal opinion, though. It’s a bit cheesy and kind of ruined for me by negative connotations but regardless of that it is not my favourite name.
I appreciate hearing people’s thoughts…positive and negative! That’s why I ask…I like to know what it makes people think of when they hear it. Normally I am not a fan of the frilly/girly style names so much…that’s why i am questioning myself haha I think my brain is on baby name overload.
I like [name]Gabrielle[/name] a lot, much better than [name]Gabriella[/name] (which is still pretty but much less my style.) I generally prefer names without the final “a”. (For example: [name]Sophie[/name] instead of [name]Sophia[/name], [name]Isabel[/name] instead of [name]Isabella[/name], ect.)
As far as nicknames go, I like [name]Ellie[/name] a lot, and it works for [name]Gabrielle[/name]. But if you like [name]Gabby[/name] it has good connotations for me and I say go for it, it’s very cute!
I love the name. When I was younger and thought my given name was boring, I wanted to change it to [name]Gabrielle[/name].
I like the names w/o the a ending as well! Now to wait and see if husband likes it. I’ve texted him (he works on other side of country). He told me earlier today he doesn’t want to discuss names anymore until he gets home ahah but that’s not until [name]December[/name] 15th and I’m due the 23rd…I can’t help but think about names constantly!
It’s my 8 month old daughter’s name and I love it. I am really happy with our decision and have had lots of compliments on her name so far.
Some of my reasons for picking it were that to me it is a strong ‘grown up’ name while still being feminine. Funny that people are saying it sounds ‘frilly’ to them - I don’t see this, although I think Gabriella is more girly. It is recognisable so (hopefully) easy for most people to spell & pronounce, but not too poplar. It also has lots of good nickname options, as pp; I know Gabby is a bit controversial & many people seem to dislike it, but we like it, although Gabs seems to be emerging as her most usual nn and sometimes Gib-Gab. I do like Ellie too.
Regarding the sib-set issue; I think that it is best just to pick good names; your children will only be defined as part of a set for a small part of their life, but they will carry their name for all their life.
Gabrielle was also one of the VERY few names that my husband & I agreed on; my top pick was actually Astrid, nn Didi, but hubby vetoed it (as I did many of his suggestions). My signature includes a lot of my other shortlisted options, which may be of interest?
Good luck with your choice, I’m interested to see what you pick!
Aww nice to hear from someone w/ a sweet little girl named this! I had actually never heard of people disliking [name]Gabby[/name] until this thread so it’s interesting how everyone has dif taste. I’ve never met anyone in real life with this name though.
I also really like your point about the sibsets. I’ve been so fixated on making sure the names sound perfect together when really, they are separate people and will live totally separate lives!
I just named my DD [name]Gabriella[/name], nn [name]Gabby[/name] (well, really [name]Gavriella[/name], but you know). So clearly i think its awesome, and i’ve only gotten positive reactions.
Like [name]Gabrielle[/name] but I strongly dislike the nn gabby :/. And I’m
Not a fan of having to avoid the most common nn’s for a name. It can be done for sure, but it’s a hassle that I just don’t want to deal with personally. I know you said you liked the nn so then [name]Gabrielle[/name] is definitely doable
For toy. But honestly I find gabby to be harsh and reminds me of talking a lot
Seems irrelevant now since husband says he hates [name]Gabrielle[/name]! UGH. What do you do w/ a husband that hates every name suggested! I’m keeping it on the list in case she’s born on [name]Christmas[/name] (due Dec 23) would be a nice [name]Christmas[/name] name.
[name]Gabrielle[/name] is a name that I really love even though it goes against so many things I don’t normally like. I normally don’t like names that end in elle/ella. I don’t care for many french names. I don’t like biblical names. I don’t like [name]Brielle[/name] on its own. I normally don’t care for name what start with the letter G all that much (except for [name]Gemma[/name], [name]Gideon[/name] and a few others).
I like [name]Gabrielle[/name], but do prefer the full name rather than any of its nicknames. My main problem with [name]Gabrielle[/name] is remembering how each of my friends with the name pronounces it–some say Goh-bre-elle (like the “o” in hot), others, Gah-bre-elle (like the “a” in cat). I know a few of them and have had to really work to keep their preference straight in my mind.
Oh, the husband factor. I feel your pain!
Mine drove me nuts, saying no to everything but making very few suggestions of his own. In the end I made a list of my top five names and then left five blank spaces below for my husband to add his (he couldn’t come up with that many). We were then allowed to veto anything we really really hated and that left us with 2/3 final contenders including [name]Gabrielle[/name] (my preference). I must admit in the end I reminded him that our first daughter’s name was really ‘his’ pick so maybe it was my turn for final say.
thanks for the tip! I will try that…no way he could come up with 5! ha
