When you read and hear [name]Genever[/name] what are your first thoughts? [name]Do[/name] you think of anything in particular? [name]How[/name] does it sound, how do you pronounce it? Ongoing discussion on this name with my husband. Your opinions and/or experiences can help us clear this up. Thank you!
I look at it and feel like it should be [name]Genevieve[/name] or [name]Genevra[/name] or [name]Geneva[/name] but isn’t, and I am confused. I say it and basically hear [name]Jennifer[/name]. I look at it again and see the word never. I think [name]Genevieve[/name] or [name]Genevra[/name] or [name]Geneva[/name] is lovely, or [name]Guinevere[/name], and even [name]Jennifer[/name] I honestly don’t hate, but I think if you want to go with [name]Jennifer[/name], you should spell it that way. [name]Even[/name] if people hear the f/v distinction here, they will probably guess [name]Jenniver[/name].
To me it sounds like how someone from New [name]Jersey[/name] would pronounce [name]Geneva[/name]. [name]Kinda[/name] like how they say “soder” for “soda”.
[name]Genever[/name] looks incomplete and mis-spelled. [name]Don[/name]'t like it, sorry.
Looks like [name]Genevra[/name] or [name]Gen[/name]évrier misspelled, Im guessing its pronounced the same as [name]Jennifer[/name] right?
Thanks for your replies. I too see a shortened [name]Genevieve[/name] and only hear [name]Jennifer[/name], which I do not really like at all. My husband doesn’t hear “[name]Jennifer[/name]” but also said that he doesn’t think [name]Jennifer[/name] is that bad. He actually suggested we post it and see what others were seeing/hearing. Thanks. We actually both prefer [name]Geni[/name]èvre but are held back a little by English speaking pronunciation problems.
I encountered a [name]Geneive[/name] recently.
Hmmm… it looks incomplete to the eye and sounds the same aloud. I’m saying it “gen-ever” but it may be “gen-eve-er”. I clicked on this because I thought it was maybe supposed to say “[name]Geneva[/name]” in the title. I’m not trying to slam the name, it isn’t all bad, just not my favorite option when I like [name]Genevieve[/name] and [name]Geneva[/name] so much more.
Sounds like [name]Guinevere[/name] without the W sound, to me. I think I should pronounce it jen-EV-ear, just to get the most appealing pronunciation. I see it being [name]Jennifer[/name], though.
[name]Genever[/name] is the phoenetic spelling of geneva and comes from the piedmont ‘r’ intrusion. My great great aunt was ‘aunt genever’ in the family bible, although her name was actually [name]Geneva[/name]. The limited literacy of the author began writing the name as they pronounced it, a practice which obviously gained general acceptance. For example, you would never write ‘idear’ for idea, although the same dialect pronounces the ‘r’ in spoken word. Thus, your name is really a butchered (but beautiful) pronunciation of [name]Geneva[/name].
