Thoughts on girl names

Hello!

I have a 2 year old son named [name]Leon[/name] and just found out I am having a girl! We may choose [name]Jo[/name] as her middle name…(because my mother’s name is [name]Joellen[/name]) but, still cannot decide a first name. We both really like girl’s names that can easily be made into nicknames, so most on our list can be. Also, some are after our favorite artists. Let me know what you think and/or if you have any suggestions!

The possibilities are:

[name]Auguste[/name]
[name]Alice[/name]
[name]Toulouse[/name]
[name]Florence[/name]

I like [name]Alice[/name] best. [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Leon[/name] make wonderful sibling names, and [name]Alice[/name] works well with [name]Jo[/name] in the middle (have you considered [name]Joelle[/name]?).

I also like [name]Florence[/name], but [name]Flo[/name]-[name]Jo[/name] could be an unfortunate and rhyming nickname ([name]Florence[/name] IS pretty though, and due for revival!). I like [name]Florrie[/name] or [name]Flora[/name] as [name]Florence[/name] nns.

Thanks! Our last name is [name]Girard[/name] if that helps. I have been having a love/hate relationship with [name]Jo[/name], because as much as I want to use it as a middle name, it seems to only go with short names. Not that we would call her by both names, but still written out it looks somewhat awkward.

Thanks! Our last name is [name]Girard[/name] if that helps at all. I am debating whether or not to use [name]Jo[/name] as a middle name…I love it for a girl, but I don’t think it goes well with most of our list. [name]Joelle[/name] might be nice though…any other possibilities are much appreciated!

From your list I like [name]Alice[/name] and [name]Florence[/name]. [name]Auguste[/name] is also pretty.

With the name [name]Toulouse[/name], I immediately thought of a louse and that is a bad association (this is coming from someone in the states though who isn’t familiar with a lot of french names). That may not be the first association and I hope that doesn’t ruin it.

I listened to the pronounciation of [name]Toulouse[/name] on Forvo and it sounds very pretty. I think it can be usable.

[name]Toulouse[/name] is pronounced to-luce…I was thinking when she was younger in school to be called [name]Lucy[/name]. My husband is French, but the children are going to be raised in the states at least for the next 3 years.

I love the name [name]Auguste[/name]…but I know children will pronounce it august rather than oh-goost as it is in [name]France[/name]. Anyway, thank you for your help! Everyone in my family is too opinionated…and my husband just says “they’re all nice, you decide!”

I did look it up later and it sounds lovely. It would be wonderful especially since your DH is French. I am just weird and thought of something that probably no-one else would think of. Sorry if my post was bad.

Anyway good luck!

No it was good! Luckily, I don’t think most American kids no what a louse is, so hopefully wouldn’t be a problem if we choose it.

[name]Auguste[/name]- major pronunciation issues that I am sure will irk u to no end. We named our son Miró and i wanted to use the spanish pronunciation but nobody would pronounce it that way.
[name]Alice[/name]- nice solid name
[name]Toulouse[/name]- also considered this name for our son but i kept hearing “too loose”
[name]Florence[/name]- very nice

I am a little worried about the possible mispronunciation, but I really like the name [name]Auguste[/name]. My mother-in-law says I should “save it for a boy” because girls having more masculine names is more of an American trend I guess. I am also leaning to [name]Joelle[/name] as a middle name, however, my husband also brought up [name]Josette[/name]…

I like [name]Florence[/name] and [name]Alice[/name].

I love both [name]Florence[/name] and [name]Alice[/name], although I agree [name]Flo[/name] [name]Jo[/name] is a bit much (I don’t know how seriously to take that though).
[name]Toulouse[/name] is very tied to “too loose”. There is just too much teasing potential there I am afraid.
If [name]Joellen[/name] went mostly by [name]Jo[/name] would [name]Josephine[/name] be OK? [name]Alice[/name] [name]Josephine[/name] is delightful.

I like [name]Florence[/name], and think [name]Florence[/name] [name]Jo[/name] is cute.

[name]Alice[/name] [name]Josette[/name] is so beautiful! So is [name]Alice[/name] [name]Joelle[/name]. I feel like the pronunciation issues could be real problem for her if she were going to preschool in the US with names like [name]Toulouse[/name] and [name]Auguste[/name]. However, I think naming her [name]Toulouse[/name] and calling her [name]Lucy[/name] is a super cute idea. I also agree with the idea of saving [name]Auguste[/name] for a boy because I think it’s a very handsome name. I’ve never been a fan of the name [name]Florence[/name] but that’s entirely personal and other than [name]Flo[/name] [name]Jo[/name] I don’t think there’s anything objectively wrong with it.

I wouldn’t use [name]Toulouse[/name], personally. It’s a decently large city in [name]France[/name], and a male painter. I think it would be like naming your daughter “[name]Philadelphia[/name]” or “[name]Charleston[/name]” here in the US-- might raise some eyebrows.

[name]Jo[/name] middles, in addition to [name]Joelle[/name] and [name]Josette[/name]:

Joscelin
Jocose
[name]Josiane[/name]
[name]Josee[/name]
[name]Josephine[/name]
[name]Jourdain[/name]
[name]Jovienne[/name]
[name]Joy[/name]

Thank you everyone! It’s funny what someone said about [name]Toulouse[/name] because it is used in [name]France[/name], but only for men. I am leaning to [name]Florence[/name] [name]Joelle[/name]…but have weeks to decide. I don’t think any kids will no her middle name so I’m not too worried about [name]Flo[/name] [name]Jo[/name].

I was going to say that I love [name]Florance[/name] as well, but worried about [name]Flo[/name]-[name]Jo[/name]. [name]How[/name] about something like [name]Elodie[/name] [name]Jo[/name]?

[name]Alice[/name] and [name]Florence[/name] work perfectly with [name]Leon[/name]! As for nicknames - [name]Allie[/name], [name]Alix[/name], Alicky, Lissy, [name]Lili[/name], [name]Flore[/name], [name]Fleur[/name], [name]Flossie[/name], [name]Florrie[/name], [name]Ren[/name]…

I don’t see how you take [name]Lucy[/name] from [name]Toulouse[/name], which is is pronounced “too-looz” like the painter and the city. I also think your French family may find the name silly (especially on a girl), and it doesn’t seem to fit with a classic, strong name like [name]Leon[/name]. [name]Auguste[/name] is also a (very old) masculine name in French - I’d use [name]Augusta[/name] or [name]Augustine[/name] on a woman…

other suggestions:
[name]Aurore[/name]
Aurélie
[name]Alexandra[/name]
[name]Adelaide[/name]
[name]Aline[/name]
[name]Audrey[/name]
[name]Flavie[/name]
[name]Constance[/name]

For the nickname [name]Lucy[/name] I suggest [name]Lucienne[/name], [name]Lucille[/name], or [name]Lucette[/name]. [name]Louise[/name] would be pretty too!

Are you sure about that? Because according to official statistics (available online) not a single French baby was registred as Toulose between 1900 and 2010. I’m not saying there aren’t any man named Tolouse in French, but it’s certainly very rare and will seem pretty strange/almost laughable to the average [name]France[/name] - imagine an American being called Chicago or [name]Boston[/name]…

Toulose-[name]Lautrec[/name]'s given name was [name]Henri[/name] - if you really wanted to honour him, you could use [name]Henriette[/name].

My vote goes to [name]Florence[/name] [name]Jolie[/name]. I think [name]Jolie[/name] is a nice way to honor your mother while still remaining feminine. I’m not a fan of [name]Jo[/name].
