Thoughts on Harlock?

Hello! I am a first time poster and having a baby boy but having the hardest time coming up with a name my husband and I agree on. His tastes seem to differ a bit from mine where he leans toward a more creative, original names and I don’t know how I feel about that when applied to boys.

His current preference is the name Harlock with the option to call him [name_m]Lock[/name_m]. I don’t hate the name but it it is pretty different. I’d love and appreciate some feedback on this!

I instantly think Warlock - sorry! If it’s the nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m] he really likes though, I’m sure there are plenty of other ways to use that nn if you ultimately decide Harlock isn’t for you.

Oh I like it. Its got the [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] feel and its not common or something as widely recognized as [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]. Har and [name_m]Lock[/name_m] are both current sounds, like people like them and [name_m]Lock[/name_m] is a strong nn, I can see how a lot of people might not go for it as it does feel very masculine but I can also see why someone would really like it.

Two things:

It sounds like a combination of harlot and warlock. I don’t like it.

May I suggest Lachlan / Lochlan / Locklin nn Lock?

I’m not a huge fan of Harlock, but it isn’t terrible. Definitely a little out there. [name_m]Havelock[/name_m], though, is a huge GP name of mine. haha I agree with pp poster’s suggestion of [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m].

Instantly I thought of warlocks and all things sinister. I like someone’s suggestion of [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]; that’s a great name that can be nicknamed Lach or even [name_m]Lock[/name_m].

Really hate to agree with the first part of this post, as I want to like Harlock, but these are also the first things I thought of. But I looove the suggestion of [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m]! There’s also [name_m]Havelock[/name_m] which I like a lot!

It makes me think “havoc” sorry!
I also like [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] nn [name_m]Lock[/name_m]
If your husband wants something rarer what about [name_u]Loki[/name_u] nn Lok?

If he will have a two or three syllable last name, I would go straight to [name_m]Lock[/name_m] which I really like. [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] is a great name too.

I don’t like it. It just sounds “off” to me. I prefer [name_u]Harley[/name_u] or [name_m]Harlyn[/name_m], but if you want to get the [name_m]Lock[/name_m] nickname I also think [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] or maybe [name_m]Lockwood[/name_m] would be a better option. Or you could just use [name_m]Lock[/name_m]/[name_m]Locke[/name_m].

Thanks for the feedback everyone! I do like the other suggestions but it seems using [name_m]Lock[/name_m] was only an option with Harlock, which while I kind of like it, I just don’t think my little guy would be loving that name throughout his life. I agree with most of the responses and have talked him into revisiting our list.

Also, I did like the [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] suggestions but our last name is one syllable so I think I wasn’t loving the sound of [name_m]Locke[/name_m] really either unless it’s a middle name. Oh well, back to the drawing board!

I like it
What do you think of Hemlock?

It sounds poisonous. Maybe because it is similar to hemlock

I immediately thought of [name_m]Captain[/name_m] Harlock.

I’m not a fan. It sounds too much like harlot.

Have to agree with previous posters; it’s too close to both ‘harlot’ and ‘warlock.’ I love the suggestion of [name_m]Havelock[/name_m] and would like to add the vaguely similar [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m], [name_m]Enoch[/name_m], [name_m]Rocco[/name_m], Winoc, [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], [name_m]Harlan[/name_m], and [name_m]Hawthorn[/name_m].

I really like Harlock - it has [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] vibes and is reminiscient of [name_m]Hawthorne[/name_m]/[name_u]Harper[/name_u]/[name_u]Harley[/name_u] sounds. Alternatively, I quite like [name_m]Lorcan[/name_m]?
