Thoughts on Hosanna and Annora

What are your thoughts on Hosanna and [name]Annora[/name]? From my research, Hosanna is a Greek name meaning “praise,” while [name]Annora[/name] is an English variant of the Medieval [name]Honora[/name], meaning “honor.”

So, do you like them? Together? Separately? With a nickname - [name]Annie[/name]? Any similar names you like, but still somewhat “classic”?

ALL HYPOTHETICAL…

Hosanna doesn’t really grab me. It seems somewhat clunky to me? It does remind me of [name]Johanna[/name] a little (pronounced [name]Yo[/name]-hunna), which I like.

[name]Annora[/name] is lovely, I hadn’t heard it before. It has a lovely meaning and good nn choices - annie or nora. I like it a lot.

I agree. I don’t like the sound of Hosanna but I think [name]Annora[/name] is very nice.

[name]Annora[/name] is lovely, but don’t you just know
Hosanna will only be nicknamed a “Ho”.

– [name]Nephele[/name]

I actually love both, although nephele has a point about the possible nn for Hosanna (and I hadn’t thought about that before). I love the sounds of both and the meanings of both and I love that both could use nn’s [name]Ann[/name] or [name]Anna[/name].

I love [name]Annora[/name]! [name]Annie[/name] and [name]Nora[/name] are both great nns, though it’s a beautiful name with or without nicknames.

I don’t love Hosanna though…it reminds me of “Hose” and I agree with [name]Nephele[/name] about possible teasing.

Instead of Hosanna, what about [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Annika[/name], [name]Roxana[/name], or [name]Honor[/name]? (Not necessarily as siblings to [name]Annora[/name], just names you might like as replacements.)

Good luck!

I think they would make great twin names, Hosanna for a boy, [name]Honora[/name] for a girl, I prefer the H spelling.

I like [name]Annora[/name]. It’s so pretty and old-fashioned. Hosanna is pretty too, but it doesn’t really sound . . . namelike to me. What about [name]Susannah[/name] or [name]Susana[/name] as an alternative?

Thanks, girls! I honestly hadn’t at all considered the “Ho” nickname problem for Hosanna, and coming in to this, I liked it more than [name]Annora[/name] - I absolutely hate the name [name]Nora[/name], that’s why.

What do you think of them as potential middle names, for names like [name]Charlotte[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], [name]Catherine[/name], [name]Margaret[/name], [name]Cecily[/name], or [name]Emmeline[/name]?

Oh, and thanks for the suggestion of [name]Susannah[/name] - so cute! Any more?

I think [name]Annora[/name] is very pretty, but I fear that non-NEs or borderline NEs might misinterpret it as made up, so maybe the [name]Honora[/name] spelling would be better (although that eliminates the [name]Ann[/name] nicknames). Hosanna isn’t a name to me – it’s a religious exclamation along the lines of Alleluia. Pretty sound, but too much for a name.

I like [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Annora[/name], [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Annora[/name], and [name]Cecily[/name] [name]Annora[/name].

Two more Hosanna alternatives: [name]Odelia[/name] and [name]Osanna[/name]. THey both mean praise, like Hosanna. Good luck.

[name]Annora[/name] is very pretty.

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Lemon[/name],

Hosanna is quite a pretty name – perhaps most appropriate in the middle, since the name would tend to be a conversation starter, which might get tiring.

BTW…

In about 10 years, I am going to be wondering what names you and Mr. Right ended up using for your children. Would you please be sure to announce the names on NB (assuming NB is still here) – using the same user ID “[name]Lemon[/name]”? Otherwise, I will always wonder in the back of my mind how many kids you had and which of your names you used.

Thanks in advance!

I am pretty new here, but I actually like Hosanna quite a bit. I used the name–for my avatar on second life when my dh and I tried that out.

Since then my taste in names has gotten a bit more conservative, and then expanded again. My two living children are [name]Hannah[/name] and [name]Peter[/name], but after I’m out of family names ([name]Benjamin[/name] [name]Mark[/name] “[name]Jamin[/name]”, [name]John[/name] [name]Ernest[/name], and [name]George[/name] [name]Alfred[/name] “[name]Geordi[/name]”), I’d like to use some more obscure Biblical boys’ names ([name]Shem[/name]? [name]Hezekiah[/name]? [name]Asa[/name]? probably not Mephibosheth…) My girls’ names tend more to the unusual but traditional at the moment (family names [name]Rebecca[/name] [name]May[/name], [name]Rhoda[/name] [name]Lucy[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name] [name]Susan[/name], maybe [name]Virginia[/name], [name]Rose[/name], [name]Leah[/name], [name]Charity[/name]; long list includes [name]Pearl[/name], [name]Eve[/name], [name]Trinity[/name], [name]Eden[/name], [name]Natalia[/name], [name]Martha[/name], though Kezziah pops on and off).

I prefer straight-up [name]Honor[/name] to [name]Annora[/name]. It seems like a pointless spelling change to [name]Honora[/name] to me, even though I know it has some history.

Not keen on either name. Hosanna makes me think of “hose”, as well as the bratty girl from [name]Johnny[/name] Tremain ([name]Isannah[/name]). [name]Annora[/name] just doesn’t appeal to me for some reason.

Bumping this up to making the thread easier for [name]Lemon[/name] to find.

love, love love [name]Annora[/name]. Prefer Shoshanna …

Ha! I was wondering how and when this thread got resurrected! I didn’t even remember making it, to be honest…

Oh, everwaiteing! Of course - how could I possibly name a child without you all? If NB is around - and I assume it will be - I will definitely tell you all if and when I have children. [name]Don[/name]'t you worry! You’ll probably have to stop me from ripping all my hair out because my future husband doesn’t like the names I’ve picked out…

Thanks, [name]Lemon[/name]! I am so glad to know that I won’t be left in suspense forever!
