thoughts on Ivory?

My sister is considering this name for her daughter and I’m torn. I really want to be supportive of the name she likes but i just have a big meh reaction to her choices lately. Especially [name_u]Ivory[/name_u].

What do you guys think? When i first heard it, my immediate thoughts were about white supremacy and elephant poaching. But i mentioned that to a friend who insisted [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] was delicate and vintage and lace-like. For her it brought up images of vintage wallpaper and cameo necklaces.

So…what do you guys think? Can [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] work? Am i being too judgy? Help me love [name_u]Ivory[/name_u].

I’m on your side. [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] sounds pretty (it’s very similar to [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]) but it doesn’t bring up positive images for me. Whenever I hear the name [name_u]Ivory[/name_u], I hear the song [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] and [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] playing in my head. It’s definitely not a favorite of mine.

Yeah, I’m on your side, too. [name_m]Just[/name_m] reading the title of your post (before I read what you had to say), I immediately thought - ugh, elephant poaching and white supremacy!! Not positive images to be associated with a name. Or the expression “tickling the ivories.” Ew, weird. Oh, and isn’t there a soap called [name_u]Ivory[/name_u]? If she likes [name_u]Ivory[/name_u], why not suggest [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] or [name_f]Iris[/name_f]? [name_m]Both[/name_m] vintage-y, both unique, both “thing” names (in this case, plants rather than elephant tusks…). Or if she likes the white theme, what about [name_f]Bianca[/name_f]? Sounds vintage-y and unique, and no elephant poaching involved. Or [name_u]Emory[/name_u], [name_u]Ellery[/name_u]? It has a similar sound to [name_u]Ivory[/name_u]. Or if she’s into the ‘v’ sound, how about [name_u]Ever[/name_u]? Really, anything but [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] would probably be a step up.

I will answer as an [name_f]Ebony[/name_f]. It sounds great in theory but I always get [name_f]Ebony[/name_f] and [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] sung to me and its always one line. Its considered lower class and trashy in the US and UK and I’m sure [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] would too. I do love my name and an [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] could always go by [name_f]Ivy[/name_f].

I agree with you. Also, I think of [name_u]Ivory[/name_u] brand soap. I don’t think it is usable.

Yes I think about elephants and that song too.

There’s lots of other more pleasant names ending with “ry” like [name_u]Avery[/name_u], [name_f]Annemarie[/name_f] etc and other names that call to mind that imagery your friend came up with.
