Thoughts on James?

We like the name [name_u]James[/name_u] a lot. It’s a family name and goes well with our daughter’s name. We only want him to be called [name_u]James[/name_u] (not [name_m]Jim[/name_m], [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m], [name_u]Jamie[/name_u], etc.), but I think it will be fine because we can just correct people if they try to call him one of those nicknames. Here are the things holding us back:

  1. When writing [name_u]James[/name_u] in the possessive (ex. [name_u]James[/name_u]’ appt. went well) , you have to write either [name_u]James[/name_u]’ or [name_u]James[/name_u]'s (apparently either way is acceptable). This seems a little awkward as compared to other names that don’t end in s.

  2. When verbally saying the possessive, you have to say “Jameses appt. went well.” Once again, maybe a little awkward compared to the other names not ending in s.

  3. Our last name starts with an s. Not sure if that’s a big deal or not. Our family member did it with the same last name and so did [name_u]James[/name_u] Spader.

Please let me know your thoughts on these things and if you think they matter. I know [name_u]James[/name_u] is a popular name, so it seems like people probably don’t mind the name in the possessive. Thanks!

[name_u]James[/name_u] is a great classic name! I’d stick w/the simpler “[name_u]James[/name_u]’ appt, [name_u]James[/name_u]’ dog,” etc. [name_m]Just[/name_m] pretend it’s plural when it suits you. I doubt it will ever be a big deal.

I love [name_u]James[/name_u]! I don’t see a problem with the plurals or an S last name. I also have a little cousin that goes exclusively by [name_u]James[/name_u] and its never been a problem.

I love [name_u]James[/name_u]. I’m with on not liking anything but [name_u]James[/name_u]. I don’t say any of what you said being an issue.

[name_f]My[/name_f] husbands name ends in s and I’ve never given the s’ thing much thought its what it is and people do it without even thinking about it or at least I do and have., 2 of our picks end in a as well and I’m certain that if there is an issue with the names that won’t be it  [name_u]James[/name_u] is one of those classic names that never went away and had just steadily plodded along. [name_f]My[/name_f] personal experiences have been the nn is usually only there if the parents put it there . [name_m]Jimmy[/name_m] is older like nn jack for [name_m]John[/name_m] and unlikely to come up., [name_u]Jamie[/name_u] might when he’s older like someone like a wife might call him that bit [name_u]James[/name_u] is short already and likely won’t be corrupted by peers. I know multiple children with it as forst and as middle and it seems a very clean and accepted name that everyone loves and when you say his name is [name_u]James[/name_u] people usually say oh I love [name_u]James[/name_u] . If you’re christian there is the nt namesake and most people know a [name_u]James[/name_u] but when another pops up they don’t say oh I know a [name_u]James[/name_u] they accept that its one of those magic names that is all around and still manages to be special and unique. Its a good name .

Oh and the s last name thing won’t be am issue because [name_u]James[/name_u] is a single syllable so you don’t say the a them another a its smooth and shouldn’t cause a problem. Give him a 2-3 syllable middle without an a in it and that will be a good extra buffer like say you Ln is [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] .
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] …
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u]
Neither reads with difficulty

Oh [name_u]James[/name_u]! Such a great classic. You really can’t go wrong with such a handsome name : )

Nope, I think [name_u]James[/name_u] sounds splendid. I would personally stick with the plural of [name_u]James[/name_u] as [name_u]James[/name_u]’ for simplicities sake (plus, it looks neater) and it’s not weird, either. It’s an old name, and many people have used [name_u]James[/name_u] just like any other name. And for what it’s worth, I prefer [name_u]James[/name_u] just as [name_u]James[/name_u], too
