Thoughts on Jarvis

My partner is dead set on Jarvis for a boy. I just don’t like it. But willing to hear a good rationale that isn’t connected to rockstars or Marvel characters. What do you think about the name? Any associations or nn suggestions?

I don’t know any rockstars or [name_u]Marvel[/name_u] characters named [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m], so I have that advantage. I once had a cute boy in school named [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] and the way people joked with him and said his name (nicely) made me love it. Would he/you like [name_m]Jerome[/name_m], [name_u]Jericho[/name_u], [name_m]Jethro[/name_m], [name_m]Jeremy[/name_m], [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m], something like that?

I also dislike this name

I think it’s handsome! I associate it with the youtuber [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m], which is a positive association for me.

[name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] Cocker is the rockstar and J.A.R.V.I.S is the AI butler of [name_m]Iron[/name_m] [name_m]Man[/name_m]. I’m not a fan of either but my boyfriend is. He’s even tried to put on playlists with [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] Cocker to convince me to like him. Not working.

I’m from [name_u]Sweden[/name_u] and I want a name that would sound good for my family to pronounce. [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] would sound like “ja visst” which roughly translates to “yes of course”. We have very soft sounds in Swedish, so would not have the D sound before the J in any name. [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] would be more like Yarvis. This is of course also an issue with any J or G names.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite boy names include [name_m]Nevio[/name_m], [name_m]Leif[/name_m], [name_m]Eben[/name_m], [name_m]Viggo[/name_m], [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_m]Elio[/name_m].

Unfortunately he doesn’t really like any of them. His other favourites include [name_m]Heath[/name_m], [name_u]Rudy[/name_u], [name_m]Dante[/name_m], [name_m]Donald[/name_m] (hard no on that one for me) [name_m]Chester[/name_m] and Kemba.

[name_f]My[/name_f] only meet-you-middle-way of those is [name_u]Rudy[/name_u] if the full name is [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m]. But he said no on that.

I think his style is based on basketball players and comic book heroes, as well as some old old school names. [name_f]My[/name_f] style is a bit more Scandinavian I guess.

Any suggestions to bridge the gap?

Thank you! What about it don’t you like? I need specifics so that I can tell my boyfriend to shelf this name.

Oh sure!

The only [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] I know is the one from marvel, which may lead to teasing or just a too strong of an association even if it isn’t negative. I can imagine saying “I’m Jarvis” and people saying “Like in Avengers?”, which may be frustrating. [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] (if pronounced yar-vis) reminds me of Barf or Yarf. If Jar-vis I immediately think of Jar, Jars, [name_m]Jarred[/name_m] or Jarring. I can’t think of any other names that have the Jahr sound. It also reminds me [name_f]Mavis[/name_f] and [name_m]Marvin[/name_m], which to me sound dated and not appealing.

Oh, dear. I share your taste in names, not his! Although I do love [name_m]Chester[/name_m]. Maybe some of your favorite names, slightly altered, are the names of comic book characters or rock stars?

It reminds me of Faze [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] from youtube, but it isnt TERRIBLE.

Very true. They could definitely be teased for being named after a comic book butler.

I just think of jars, jar sauce, jarheads, jarring. It’s not a kind name. More like an insult, like “you bloody jarvis!”

I’ve never heard of the name outside of a YouTuber. It’s very spunky and vibrant!

I kind of like [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]. It’s solid and interesting

Maybe you could offer some traditional, international-sounding comic book names and see if he likes those? Something like Pietro (Quicksilver), Peter (Spiderman), or Stephen (Doctor Strange)?. Or try to find a traditional name with a pop culture nickname like Benedict ‘Bucky’ or Laurence ‘Loki’. Or maybe Stanley for Stan Lee?

As for basketball players, maybe he would use a more traditional one like Stephen, Bryant, or James?

I like [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m]. There’s a BEAUTIFUL place near where I live called [name_m]Jervis[/name_m] [name_u]Bay[/name_u] (pronounced Jarvis)…It’s one of the most unspoiled beaches in the world so while positive for me!

But if you hate it maybe [name_u]Jasper[/name_u] or [name_m]Jolyon[/name_m] might work?

I don’t love the sound of it. I prefer [name_m]Jari[/name_m].

Oh I love [name_m]Jarvis[/name_m] so much. (I don’t think I could use it since it’s the name of the superintendent of a school I work out, and now it has a negative connotation as he is not my favorite person lol)
