Thoughts on Jemima

I had completely forgotten this name existed until yesterday, which is odd since I was addicted to [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and Play School (Australian Play School) when I was a child. But I was reading [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] Puddle duck to my daughters yesterday and had a ‘Woah, [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. Now that’s a nice name’ moment.

What are everyone’s thoughts on [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]? I personally really like it, it feels very sweet. But I can’t help thinking of [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] whenever I hear it/think about it. And I like the name [name_f]Jemma[/name_f]/[name_f]Gemma[/name_f] but it hasn’t got the same charm as [name_f]Jemima[/name_f].

I adore the name [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]. I see what you mean about [name_f]Jemma[/name_f], it definitely doesn’t have the same charm to it, but [name_u]Jem[/name_u] is quite sweet. I do prefer [name_u]Jem[/name_u] as a boys nickname though.
[name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_u]Jem[/name_u], Emi and [name_f]Emma[/name_f] could all work as nicknames, but if you really just like [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], you can insist on no nickname. People tend to fall in line with how you nickname a child (if at all) anyway.

I know it has a negative connotation in the states, but I dont get that here in the UK at all. Its much more of an underused classic. Feels quite sophisticated too. I noticed you’re in Australia, so I’m assuming you also don’t tend to find that people feel negatively about it.

[name_f]Melody[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_u]Arden[/name_u] [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] ____ would make a lovely sibset too.

From your signature as a middle, I like

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]

I’m from the southern United States and I can’t get past the negative connotations here. Also, I don’t like the sound. I much prefer [name_f]Gemma[/name_f]. That being said I know it’s well liked in the UK and Australia.

I think that many people will associate the name with Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] right off the bat. I do love the name though! I dont see anything wrong with [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] either personally. My favorite variation is Jemina, I have only hear it used once (Jemina [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], pronounced jem-in-uh) but I think it is gorgeous!

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is a wonderful name, and the negative connotations of Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] are virtually unknown outside the US I think. I had to look it up to see what the issue is, since I’ve seen it mentioned on here a few times. Since you’re in Australia, I really wouldn’t worry.

I’d use [name_u]Jem[/name_u] as a nickname - I love how sweet yet tomboyish it is - but the suggestion of [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] is a lovely one if you’re looking for something a little cuter, girlier and further from [name_f]Jemma[/name_f].

I too am from the US and can’t get past that. But I do think it has a very pretty sound, and is a beautiful, regal sounding name.

It’s a pretty familiar name where I live (UK).

But I think if you are American or planning on moving to the US then you might want to reconsider since it has racist connotations there via a company called Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f], who used a racist character archetype as a logo for their company and products.

Outside the US it would probably be OK.

I’m also Australian, and there are no racist connotations with the name here. I’ve only ever heard about the ‘Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]’ thing on Nameberry. [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is a gorgeous name, and also reminds me of [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] Puddle-duck & Playschool (and a late-teens girl I know called [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] - she’s from UK). I love it, and I say use it!

Also maybe worth mentioning [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_m]Kirke[/name_m]- not a bad namesake!

Oh I had absolutely no idea about the negative US connotations, that’s awful. I don’t think we’ll use it as a first name, we’re rather set on either [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f] or [name_f]Blythe[/name_f] but it would make a lovely middle name. Or perhaps a pets name. What a shame about the Aunt [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] association.

I agree with everyone though, [name_u]Jem[/name_u] and [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] are such adorable nicknames. Also someone’s suggestion of [name_f]Jemima[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] does make me want to consider it as a first just because of how well the two go together.

You know, the other day I was thinking of this name also and just how lovely it is… And I too would use [name_u]Jem[/name_u] as a nickname. I always figured it was pronounced [name_u]Jem[/name_u]-em-ah. I always loved it that way, until the other day I saw it pronounced [name_u]Jem[/name_u]-Ime-ah. I was so baffled, like, had I been mispronouncing it all these years? Correct or not, I stilly prefer my original pronunciation of it.

Now I’m interested, how do you berries pronounce [name_f]Jemima[/name_f]?

Unfortunately, it’s too iffy in the US. I think it’s lovely, but I would never want to offend someone. Racial associations can be incredibly painful. I say juh my muh.

It’s regularly used where I live and it’s: juh-MY-mah, MY like the word my.

I’ve always pronounced it juh-MY-mah because that’s how everyone says it here.

[name_f]Jemima[/name_f] is absolutely gorgeous, and I adore it  I also like [name_f]Mimi[/name_f], [name_f]Jemma[/name_f] or [name_f]Emmie[/name_f] as nn options!

I think it’s absolutely too loaded to ever use. I’d never be able to look at a person the same if they knowingly (or unknowingly, tbh) used it in [name_u]America[/name_u].
