Thoughts on Katharine?

So, I’m not having kids any time soon, just planning in advance I suppose haha. A name I’ve really been liking recently is Katharine, with the nickname Kick. I also like the spelling Katherine although I think I slightly prefer the ‘a’ over the ‘e’. I think it’s classic without being overused and feels very Old Hollywood (on account of Katharine Hepburn). I like girls’ names that are strong and not overly frilly but still feminine. I think Katharine ticks all those boxes.

If I did ever use it, I like the nickname Kick. I’m not sure if that’s too Kennedy related as it was also the nickname of JFK’s sister Kathleen? To me, it’s a spunky and fun nickname although I’ve heard people say it’s too weird haha. I’m curious as some people have also said Katharine (or any spelling variation) is too boring and plain? I would like to pair it with a more unusual middle, although I don’t have any ideas yet.

I was wondering what everyone’s thoughts were on Katharine, specifically with the nickname Kick? Any ideas for middle names? Thanks for reading

I like [name_f]Katharine[/name_f]. It’s a lovely classic. I don’t think it’s boring or plain. I don’t like the nickname [name_u]Kick[/name_u]. Some middle name ideas: [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], [name_f]Dalia[/name_f], [name_f]Galilea[/name_f], [name_f]Luciana[/name_f], [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Mabel[/name_f], [name_f]Melina[/name_f], [name_u]Noa[/name_u], [name_f]Noemi[/name_f], [name_u]Noor[/name_u], [name_f]Rivka[/name_f], [name_u]Robin[/name_u], [name_f]Roxanne[/name_f], [name_f]Sapphire[/name_f], [name_u]Sol[/name_u], [name_u]Vida[/name_u], [name_f]Willa[/name_f], [name_f]Xiomara[/name_f].

[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] is lovely - classic, elegant and sweet. [name_u]Kick[/name_u] is an ok nickname choice, I’ve only ever heard it for [name_f]Kathleen[/name_f] [name_u]Kennedy[/name_u] myself, but I don’t think I’d say it was too tied to the Kennedys. The [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] spelling does make me think of [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] Hepburn though!

For middles, sorry if I’ve repeated some or if this isn’t what you were looking for!

I think the name [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] is effortlessly classy and I think [name_u]Kick[/name_u] would be an adorable nickname for your little girl :relaxed: I feel like you could also use the nickname [name_u]Kit[/name_u], which has a similar sound and feel to it.
Some MN suggestions (I think [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] sounds great with a punchy one syllable middle name):
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_f]Paige[/name_f]
[name_f]Katherine[/name_f] [name_m]Hart[/name_m]

[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] is gorgeous understated, regal & effortless. I prefer [name_f]Katherine[/name_f] but still [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] works and it’s a beautiful choice. I’m not mad on the nickname [name_u]Kick[/name_u] I think it feels random and doesn’t work effortlessly I think a nickname should be effortless natural to use [name_u]Kick[/name_u] doesn’t fit that memo. I like [name_u]Kit[/name_u] feels similar too [name_u]Kick[/name_u] but more of a natural nickname. Still If [name_u]Kick[/name_u] is the nickname you want to use go for it & I don’t think the name is too tied too the Kennedy’s the association isn’t there for me.

You’ve had a few suggestions so count any repeats as me being in agreement with the berries

[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] is classic but with something glamourous about it.

[name_u]Kick[/name_u] isn’t my favourite but it is kind of cool

[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] is lovely!! One of my favourite spellings. I personally think [name_u]Kick[/name_u] is really sweet, sounds friendly.
I wouldn’t say it’s overused at all!

here are some middle suggestions (sorry for any repeats)

[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Rosella[/name_f]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Maelys[/name_f]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Diana[/name_f]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Corinna[/name_f]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Vienna[/name_f]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]

I love, love, love this spelling! It’s so elegant, but the Hepburn association normalises it.

[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_u]Joan[/name_u]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_u]Antonia[/name_u]
[name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Elisabeth[/name_f]

I like Katharine/Katherine. It’s a classic and not boring. I like how it doesn’t have an -a or an -ie cutesy ending but is still totally feminine.

[name_u]Kick[/name_u] is a cute nn. I didn’t know about the Kennedys so no opinion on that. I’m not sure [name_u]Kick[/name_u] will stick around very long as its quite cutesy or might suit a more sporty girl better than some others but it’s worth a shot. [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] has a ton of other nn options if it doesn’t work out so that’s great.

I used to like [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] with a K and now I like it with a C. Who knows why?

But I will always love [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] with an A which says Hepburn.

There is nothing tame or boring about the K-A Hepburn version.

I wouldn’t accept [name_u]Kick[/name_u] as a nn, but if she’s anything like her namesake, she’ll let you know soon enough if she likes it or not!

I think [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] is very elegant and not super common anymore.

However, even if you call her [name_u]Kick[/name_u] at home, I think you have to be prepared that she is likely to become “Katie” to everyone else. I know lots of parents that tried to fight a nickname when it is so common like this and they all lost the battle in the end. However, if you like [name_f]Katie[/name_f], too, then I say go for it!

I’ve been considering [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] myself lately! I like that she reminds me of [name_f]Katharina[/name_f] von [name_f]Bora[/name_f] (who I super admire!), without the very German-ness of [name_f]Katharina[/name_f]. :joy:. I DO have a lot of [name_m]German[/name_m] blood but I’ve never really connected with the name 100%.

I’m considering [name_f]Katharine[/name_f] [name_f]Esme[/name_f] nn [name_u]Kit[/name_u] myself… I don’t find [name_u]Kick[/name_u] very appealing but I guess it’s fine?

Good luck!

This is my name  and I love this spelling. I have always just been called Katharine, but my favourite nickname is Kit. I am named after my German granny katharina.
