Thoughts on Leland Thomas?

Hello all! I was hoping to get opinions on the name [name_u]Leland[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m]. [name_u]Leland[/name_u] is my boyfriend’s grandfather’s middle name and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is my boyfriend’s middle name as well as his dad’s first name. I think it’s a strong name and obviously has a lot of meaning to my boyfriend. He’s just worried kids will make fun of the name [name_u]Leland[/name_u]. I don’t think they will and kids will be jerks regardless of someone’s name anyway. He’s also afraid it will be pronounced incorrectly. I’d like to know how you would pronounce [name_u]Leland[/name_u] upon looking at how it’s spelled. It’s kind of rare so I am afraid people will botch it.

ETA: Wanted to give people some options for how they think Leland should be pronounced. If you would be able to pick the option below that most closely matches how you perceive the pronunciation to be, that would be extremely helpful!

  1. Lee-land
  2. Lee-lind
  3. Lay-land
  4. Lay-lind
  5. Lel-and
  6. Lel-ind

Thank you!

I love it! It is a strong and handsome name even without the family meaning. I pronounce [name_u]Leland[/name_u], [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-land. I don’t think pronunciation will be an issue. While it is an unpopular name, it’s pretty familiar and the spelling is not counter intuitive. [name_u]Lee[/name_u] is also a good nn. I think [name_u]Leland[/name_u] will fit in great with the many vintage names that are being revived. Like you said any name can be made fun of, I don’t see [name_u]Leland[/name_u] being an obvious target. I met a little [name_u]Leland[/name_u] a couple weeks ago and it made me love the name even more!

It’s nice, especially with such meaning to you both! If you’re worried about teasing (which I wouldn’t really be), you could just call him by nn [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. I’d pronounce it lee-land, but if that’s not what you’re thinking for the pronunciation, you might have issues.

I just wanna clarify, do you pronounce it with the last syllable rhyming with wind (as in "the wind is strong today) or exactly like the word land? Because I pronounce it more like [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-lind.

Yes, sorry, I pronounce it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-[name_u]Lind[/name_u] not “land”!

[name_u]Love[/name_u] it! Such a beautiful name. I say [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-lind.

  1. [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-lind

I don’t see anything particularly easy to tease from it. I’d say it is a very handsome/distinguished sounding name. I can hear the baliff say “All rise, The Honorable [name_u]Leland[/name_u] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] XYZ presiding”

Very handsome and unexpected choice!

Great name! Very handsome and strong! I say [name_u]LEE[/name_u]-lind. Well, maybe it comes out more like [name_u]LEE[/name_u]-lund.

You could use the nickname [name_u]Lee[/name_u] or [name_m]Leo[/name_m] or even [name_m]Land[/name_m]!

I’ve never met one and I’m surprised it is ranked as high as it is. I guess little Lelands are out there somewhere!

Good luck!

I pronounce it [name_u]LEE[/name_u]-lind. Handsome name! I also love the nickname [name_u]Lee[/name_u] it comes with.

I think it’s because how I have heard it pronounced before but I pronounce it [name_m]Lay[/name_m]-land

I would say [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-land and I think that’s how most people seeing the name for the first time would assume it was pronounced.

Thanks for your thoughts! I’m new to Nameberry and was wondering what the different colors in your signature mean for each name? I would like to make one for myself eventually.

I think it’s quite a good combo, and obviously both names have strong meaning for you. I pronounce [name_u]Leland[/name_u] like option 1 or 2.

Cool name! No teasing.

I say it [name_u]LEE[/name_u]-lund.

The different colours are just up the the preferences of the person in question - when you make a signature, you can choose the text colours (as well as font, size, and other cool stuff).

Fantastic name. The closest prn I use is [name_u]Lee[/name_u] [name_u]Lind[/name_u] or [name_u]Lee[/name_u] luhnd

Such a handsome name! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! I pronounce it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-lind
