My brother and sister-in-law just found out they are expecting a baby girl in [name]August[/name]! She will be named [name]Liesl[/name] [name]Victoria[/name], and I was wondering what everyone’s opinions are! I’m excited to be Auntie [name]Em[/name] to baby [name]Liesl[/name]. I’ve always liked the name from The Sound of [name]Music[/name], but wouldn’t use it myself. What do you think?
[name]Lovely[/name] name, it does have a strong association with the Sound of [name]Music[/name], but it’s a good association! I think it is very pretty but doesn’t work with my last name very well.
So many great characters are named [name]Liesl[/name]. The Sound of [name]Music[/name] is one of my favorite movies. The main character in The Book Thief by [name]Markus[/name] Zusak spells it “[name]Liesel[/name],” but I love her too.
I guess I’ll be the voice of dissent here. I don’t really like [name]Liesl[/name] too much. It rhymes with weasel and diesel so I don’t find the sound very appealing. I prefer [name]Anneliese[/name].
I know a [name]Liesl[/name] so I didn’t think of tSoM first. Though the [name]Liesl[/name] I know is 60ish and it thus feels old fashioned to me.
[name]Heidi[/name] and [name]Liesl[/name] however are names that berries seem to like and that just sound like old country bumpkin names to me.
(I think they are sweet, in an old fashioned innocent sort of way, I just wouldn’t use them).
Being [name]German[/name], I was genuinely surprised when I found out (stumbling across Australian swimmer Leisel [name]Jones[/name] on TV) that this name is also used in English-speaking countries. It’s considered really old-fashioned here, along with other [name]German[/name] names that are brought up here on Nameberry every once in a while such as [name]Anneliese[/name] or [name]Hannelore[/name]. It is also really nickname-y, most Liesels are likely to have been christened [name]Elisabeth[/name], [name]Anneliese[/name], [name]Lieselotte[/name] or something else containing Li(e)se.
In any case, I prefer the most common spelling - [name]Liesel[/name]. Dropping the -e- before -l is very Bavarian/Austrian - and this is coming from someone who has been living in Bavaria all of her life.
This is not meant to discourage you - I just felt the need to throw in some background information. If you like [name]Liesl[/name], go for it!
Interesting information! It’s actually to be my niece’s name, so I have no say on the spelling. It’s actually my sister-in-law’s middle name, and since she was named after the Sound of [name]Music[/name] character, I know they are going with the [name]Liesl[/name] spelling.
