Thoughts on Linux?

[name_m]Linux[/name_m]- does it sound made up? I tend to like tradional names and I enjoy [name_m]Linus[/name_m], but I think the X really adds something. Am I the only one? Can you think of names similar to this one that fit more of the names in my signature? Thank you!

[name_m]Linux[/name_m] does sound kind of made up, like a combination between [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and Kleenex. If you like X, you might like [name_u]Lennox[/name_u], [name_m]Felix[/name_m], [name_m]Xavier[/name_m], or [name_m]Maddox[/name_m].

It’s an operating system - like Windows or IOS.

You probably saw it somewhere because it is an existing brand name and pulled it out of your subconscious one day. It is a popular (amongst programmers and other computer nerd types) OS. People will probably think that either you or your partner is a computer nerd who really loves [name_m]Linux[/name_m]. Nothing wrong with that per se, but you should be aware that to quite a lot of people this would sound like a child named Windows.

My first impression was that it is a made up name. I much prefer [name_u]Lennox[/name_u] which I assume is pronunced much the same. Also @persphine.mare has great suggestions.

Sounds, and looks, made up.

I’ve been a fan of [name_m]Linus[/name_m] for years, and am familiar with [name_m]Linux[/name_m] because of a novel I read (or started to read!) several years ago, so I like it. Not as much as [name_m]Linus[/name_m], but it does have that scifi-ish cool feeling because of the “X” on the end. However, I do think most people will think of the computer operating system. I hadn’t expected so many people to think it looked or sounded made-up, but maybe it’s just from my familiarity with it. If I am remembering correctly, it is, in fact, an ancient [name_m]Roman[/name_m] name, which I find really cool, since it’s so different from the usual -us and -ian endings (like [name_m]Julian[/name_m], [name_m]Augustus[/name_m], etc.). (Come to think of it, that’s probably why I like [name_u]Cato[/name_u] so much, too!)

I think it’s probably safer to go with [name_m]Linus[/name_m]. But I do like it and am intrigued by it.

Good luck!

As others have said [name_m]Linux[/name_m] is an open source OS heavily used by programmers or anyone into computers, software, or open source.

The man who created [name_m]Linux[/name_m] is [name_m]Linus[/name_m].

It’s akin to naming a child iOS, Windows, or even Ubuntu (a distribution of [name_m]Linux[/name_m]).

I love [name_m]Linus[/name_m] and dislike [name_u]Lennox[/name_u] but either are preferable to [name_m]Linux[/name_m], this coming from a computer nerd.

I agree with @asthedreamer. It is a legitimate name and was around long before computers. Now, is it worth having to explain that to all the tech people out there? Probably not.

I also immediately think of it as an OS; this is coming from someone who is in no way technically inclined. Linus is better by far.

That’s what I was going to say! But I do think it’s better than naming one’s child Windows…as Windows can also mean “glass panels on a building used to look outside” and not just an OS.

As in the computer OS? The boy will grow up either boxed in to computer science or loathing it for the rest of his life. Hahaha

Until I looked closely at it I thought it was a misspelling of [name_u]Lennox[/name_u].

I prefer [name_m]Linus[/name_m] or [name_u]Lennox[/name_u].

Sorry im not really liking [name_m]Linux[/name_m] as it feels a bit awkward to say but i just love the name [name_u]Lennox[/name_u]…which could also have the cute nicknames of [name_u]Lex[/name_u] or [name_m]Lenny[/name_m]
