Thoughts on list? Boy/Girl

I’m currently expecting, and very excited! My partner and I have been wanting to have kids for awhile now, and finally struck lucky. No clue of gender, but we have decided not to find out until the birth.

  • marks our top contenders at the moment.

Girl:

[name]Mona[/name]*
[name]Elise[/name]
[name]Branwen[/name]
[name]Iseult[/name]
[name]Catalina[/name]

Boys:

[name]Louis[/name]
[name]Etienne[/name]
[name]Alistair[/name]
[name]Nathaniel[/name]
[name]Colum[/name]*

Girl:
I like all of your names here except for [name]Lolita[/name]. The connection to the novel is too much for me, especially given the fact that “Lolitas” are a popular figure in some cosplay, and there is an entire fashion trend revolving around adult women dressing as Lolis.

Girls: I don’t care much for [name]Mona[/name]. I would NEVER inflict [name]Lolita[/name] on a child, the novel and film are way too much of a bad association - I’d strongly suggest using [name]Lola[/name] instead, or better yet, their mother name [name]Dolores[/name], which is very classic and underrated. [name]Elise[/name] is pretty. [name]Branwen[/name] is fabulous. I adore [name]Iseult[/name], but I’d worry about pronunciation in English-speaking countries. [name]Catalina[/name] is one of my favorite [name]Katherine[/name] variations. I’d go with either [name]Branwen[/name] or [name]Catalina[/name], personally - or [name]Dolores[/name].

Boys: I like all your names to varying degrees, but I’m particularly fond of [name]Louis[/name] and [name]Etienne[/name].

For girls, I really like [name]Elise[/name], [name]Iseult[/name], and [name]Catalina[/name]. Not a fan of [name]Mona[/name], and [name]Lolita[/name] is an absolute NEVER because of the associations.

Boys, [name]Louis[/name], [name]Etienne[/name], and [name]Nathaniel[/name] are my favorites. [name]Colum[/name] is ok, but I prefer it spelled Collum, or [name]Callum[/name].

Oh thank you! We spotted [name]Lolita[/name] in a baby name book and thought it was pretty, neither of us have read the book but knew of it but not what it was actually about. I’ve researched it now, and I think we’ll refrain from using it.

[name]Mona[/name] and [name]Colum[/name] are old favourites, but I think we might need some fresh suggestions.

Not a fan of [name]Dolores[/name], sorry.

love [name]Iseult[/name] or [name]Isolde[/name], currently top on my list! I think although people may struggle with the pronunciation at 1st they’ll easily catch on & you can shorten it to [name]Izzy[/name]. [name]Nathaniel[/name] is one of my faves too but hubby doesn’t like it

I like all your boys names, but consider this: [name]Both[/name] your top contenders ([name]Mona[/name] and [name]Colum[/name]) have a strong “O” sound in them…if you plan on using both for siblings, it might be a bit of a mouthful.

For now though, I honestly think your boys list is great…classic, but not common. That can be difficult to achieve!

Your girls’ list, I find a little trickier. I’m not a fan of [name]Lolita[/name], and [name]Mona[/name] is not something I’m fond of, but to each their own, there’s nothing wrong with [name]Mona[/name], it just doesn’t seem to appeal to many peoples’ styles on this site. I think [name]Elise[/name] is gorgeous (though I’m biased, it’s my mn!) and [name]Branwen[/name] is pretty.

[name]Catalina[/name] is alright, but for some reason, I hear “CATTLE ina”, so for that reason, it’s not a favourite. And I agree with previous posts, [name]Iseult[/name] is very beautiful, but you’d run into a lot of pronunciation problems in the future.

I like [name]Elise[/name] and [name]Louis[/name]. [name]Mona[/name] and [name]Lolita[/name] both have a sexual conotation, so I would avoid those.

boyandgirl-could you explain the sexual links to [name]Mona[/name] please, I wasn’t aware of it and cannot find anything on it.

Correct me if I’m wrong boyandgirl, I think she’s referring to the name [name]Mona[/name] sounding like “moaner”, which has sexual overtones. FWIW, I unfortunately got the same vibe. I think [name]Monica[/name] “Moni/[name]Mona[/name]” could be a nice compromise though, as a full name.

From your boys names, my favorites are [name]Louis[/name] and [name]Alistair[/name]. I think [name]Elise[/name] is a nice girls name. [name]Iseult[/name] this spelling looks like ‘insult’ to me, sorry.

I love [name]Branwen[/name], [name]Iseult[/name], [name]Catalina[/name], [name]Alistair[/name], and [name]Colum[/name]! Great choice!

I like [name]Nathaniel[/name] and [name]Elise[/name]. I like [name]Colum[/name] too, but vastly prefer the [name]Colm[/name] spelling.

Girl:

[name]Mona[/name] - Eh, not a fan. I don’t like that it has “moan” in it.
[name]Elise[/name] - NMS but pretty.
[name]Branwen[/name] - Not bad. I think I prefer [name]Bronwen[/name] though (or even [name]Bronwyn[/name]).
[name]Iseult[/name] - A little too “out there” for me. Not sure how to pronounce it.
[name]Catalina[/name] - My favorite! Pretty!

Boys:

[name]Louis[/name] - A good name. NMS but very nice.
[name]Etienne[/name] - Eh, a little too “out there”.
[name]Alistair[/name] - Not bad. NMS.
[name]Nathaniel[/name] - [name]Love[/name]!
[name]Colum[/name] - It’s ok but I prefer [name]Callum[/name] ([name]LOVE[/name]) or [name]Collin[/name].

[name]Mona[/name] - Eh, all I hear is moan, sorry.
[name]Elise[/name] - I don’t think this name has anything substantial to it, and it doesn’t seem to flow very well in my opinion.
[name]Branwen[/name] - I like this, but I like unisex-y surname-y names. Although, I hear brawn a lot in it as in brains vs brawns. I might try [name]Bronwen[/name] so it looks less brawny.
[name]Iseult[/name] - I think this is really pretty! I like it quite a bit, actually! My only thing is that it almost sounds like insult, but I think that goes away the more you make the s sound z-like.
[name]Catalina[/name] - Sounds very hispanic to me, I don’t know if I could see this on any non-spanish speaker, unless, of course, you are. It’s pretty, though.

Boys:

[name]Louis[/name] - Nms, but very traditional yet jazzy. I can see the appeal.
[name]Etienne[/name] - Very pretty and french! It kind of catches in my throat, though, and I kinda speak french… Are you saying it the two or three syllable way? Two is more correct, but three is easier to prn.
[name]Alistair[/name] - I love [name]Alistair[/name]! I think it’s very traditional and handsome without being uber popular. I would love to see this on a little boy!
[name]Nathaniel[/name] - [name]Nathaniel[/name] is beautiful, it’s one of my favourite “normal” boy names. I hate [name]Nathan[/name], though.
[name]Colum[/name] - It makes me think of columns too much, I ver much prefer [name]Callum[/name].

Best of luck~

It’s funny to me when posters say “I can’t see this Spanish name on a non-Spanish person… OOH A FRENCH NAME!”

I love [name]Branwen[/name], [name]Catalina[/name] & [name]Iseult[/name]

For the boys I like: [name]Louis[/name], [name]Etienne[/name] & [name]Nathaniel[/name]

I also prefer the spelling/sound of “[name]Bronwyn[/name]” to “[name]Branwen[/name]”. I like “[name]Iseult[/name]”, too, but that might be one where you get a lot of mispronounciation. [name]Elise[/name] is absoutely gorgeous, I love this one.

For the boys- I adore [name]Etienne[/name]. It is one of my favorite names. I like [name]Nathanial[/name], too, but not [name]Colum[/name] or [name]Louis[/name].

dislike colum…calum is better, mona is nice

I love [name]Mona[/name] and [name]Elise[/name]! If [name]Mona[/name] is your top contender then what about [name]Mona[/name] [name]Elise[/name]? [name]Elise[/name] would be the middle name it sounds really pretty. For the boy I like [name]Nathaniel[/name] and he could be nicknamed [name]Nate[/name] which I think it a really good boys name! Congrats!

Thank you for your input! Plus there is no need to comment on [name]Lolita[/name] anymore, as we have taken it off the list.

[name]Mona[/name] is still a contender, I mean we’ve loved it since 2009 when I fostered a little girl named this. But…the ‘moaner’ thing might be too much…

I’m going to close this thread, and create a new one for suggestions. But thanks for the help.
