Thoughts on list of unique names Please :)

Hey,

Almost two years ago, we adopted four sisters, who are now 2, 3, 5, and 7, and we asked if they wanted to change their names for a fresh start and they said yes. Should I wait until the two younger ones are a little older so they can make the choice or should I change their names now. For the two older ones, what are your thoughts about (this is a long list, I want them to have a couple names to chose from), we are also expecting a little girl so this would be really useful:

[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
Anea (ah - ney - ah)
[name_f]Electra[/name_f]
Ileah (ill - ee - ah) /Aily /Eyelee
Xecia
Everie
[name_f]Acacia[/name_f]
[name_f]Clarity[/name_f]
[name_u]Sequoia[/name_u]
[name_u]Hudson[/name_u]
[name_f]Zena[/name_f]
[name_f]Kacia[/name_f]
Suhaila
[name_f]Stasia[/name_f]
[name_m]Pacific[/name_m]

[name_u]Winter[/name_u]

Thanks!!

Adoption can be such a long process! Congrats on your new little one on the way too! You have such an interesting list! I’m a little unsure about the pronunciation of some of them.
My favorites are:

[name_f]Iris[/name_f]
[name_f]Acacia[/name_f]
[name_f]Zena[/name_f]
[name_f]Stacia[/name_f]
[name_u]Winter[/name_u]
[name_f]Amber[/name_f]
[name_f]Zahara[/name_f]

[name_u]Story[/name_u]
[name_u]Raven[/name_u]

I would let the 17 loose on nameberry to choose her own name. I’d also wait for the other three to be older to make a more mature decision. Congratulations on your new baby as well as the adoption going through!

Firstly, something immediately took me about your list: I have never, ever seen my own name ([name_f]Zena[/name_f]) in a favourites list here on these forums before, and I’ve been in and around these parts for well over a decade! I used to hate my name at school - it brought attention to me due to the ‘[name_f]Xena[/name_f]: Warrior [name_f]Princess[/name_f]’ association (which was quite a popular TV show at the time), and I loathed being the centre of attention. That said, I grew to love my name - I’ve only ever come upon a couple of people with the name before, and I love that.

From your list, my favourite is [name_f]Iris[/name_f], but I also quite like [name_f]Electra[/name_f], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], [name_u]Sequoia[/name_u], [name_u]Winter[/name_u], Cinder, [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] & [name_f]Zahara[/name_f].

However, in regard to your situation, honestly, I would likely wait a while before all four of the girls are old enough to make a good, mature choice on their own so as to avoid them making speedy choices at their young ages that they may regret in their later lives. I also think that while giving them a list of names you yourself like and explaining to them why you like them, they should be free, ultimately, to choose their own name outside of that limitation too. Perhaps you could let them all know now that they can legally change their names on a specific birthday, somewhat like a coming of age, special thing (maybe their 8th, to give your eldest a little time to sit with her new name)? Or, ask them how they feel about you giving them names now as their parents (with their input), just as you are giving the new baby her name at birth? It’s hard to say really though, as a complete outsider, due to it all being such a personal thing, dependent upon so many variables – I guess it’d be best just to play it be ear, and see what choices, opinions and discussions come out of naming the new baby together, as a family?

I might wait until they’re a bit older to make the choice themselves. However, if I chose a set of 5 sisters I’d pick:
[name_u]Aspen[/name_u], Everie, [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f] & Aily.

It might seem excessive, but I would talk to your pediatrician and a child psychologist before going through with changing their names, especially for the younger two. They most likely don’t understand a “fresh start” and would be more confused, but are also young enough to perhaps not remember ever having the original name. I think it’s worth it to get professional input before going through such a lengthy process.

That being said, I’d take Anea, [name_f]Electra[/name_f], Everie, and Ileah off the list. [name_f]Electra[/name_f] comes with all kinds of baggage, and Anea and Ileah both sound and look VERY close to parts of the human digestive system. Everie is just too much like “every,” and I think it would cause confusion.

I like [name_f]Clarity[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Acacia[/name_f], [name_u]Winter[/name_u], [name_u]Sequoia[/name_u], Cinder, [name_f]Zena[/name_f], and [name_f]Zahara[/name_f]. I like Izmir and Essen fine, but I only recognize them as names of cities, and that turns me off (maybe these places are special to you or the girls, which would be meaningful, I just don’t love place names myself). [name_u]Aspen[/name_u] and [name_f]Amber[/name_f] feel a little dated to me, but that’s because I personally know some of both. [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] and [name_m]Pacific[/name_m] are cool, but they feel more masculine to me, perfect if you should ever have a boy.

In the end, though, I think if you are to change their names, you should pick it with their input, but not letting them make the choice. If I had chosen a new name at the age of seven, I’d likely be [name_f]Glimmer[/name_f] [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f] Grapefruit, which is interesting and sparkly, but certainly not something I’d like as an adult

For clarification, the two oldest asked to change their names. Thanks for your input it is much apreciated!
