Thoughts on Lucifer?

I don’t even think it’s appropriate for a cat.

I like the way [name]Lucifer[/name] sounds. Unfortunately, the connotation would make it a name that I would not use for a child. I think it would make a great name for a dog. Its the same way I feel about the name"[name]Jagger[/name]." I love the way it sounds but I knew I could never name a child that so I named my female [name]Boston[/name] Terrier, “[name]Jagger[/name].” It was a cute name and actually ended up suiting her well. [name]Glad[/name] I got to use the name

[name]Lucifer[/name] is the Devil/Satan’s actual name [regardless of your beliefs or not]. Yes it has a nice meaning of the name, but then again he is supposed to be very handsome…and not to mention absolutely evil. Why would anyone want child to have that association.

To be honest I think if I saw [and I sadly have] seen children with this name I am convinced their parents dislike them, cause I seriously can’t fathom why anyone would use it.

I think some names are unusable for their negative connotations; for instance, think about the connotation of the name [name]Adolph[/name] in our modern world.

I also agree with what [name]East[/name] said; for many people [name]Lucifer[/name] is always going to be problematic, and not just people of a certain religious background. Think about how many books and movies use the devil/Satan/[name]Lucifer[/name] as an antagonist and about how he is portrayed. Yes, there are some that go against type (i.e., His Dark Materials), but overall, by and large, the connotation of the name is extremely negative and I think will give many people pause for either truly religious or superstitious reasons.

I would also avoid using the name Iblis for the same purposes; I think it would be setting your child up for some serious problems when he goes out into the world. I agree that [name]Idris[/name] would be a great alternative.

For those who asked, for one, he’s not very religious and the community they live in isn’t either. He took the name and saw the bad connotations, then read up on history, meaning, all those kids of things and just decided that with names like [name]Lucian[/name]/[name]Lucius[/name] gaining popularity, people naming their kids [name]Pandora[/name] and such even though those are bad people in mythology just like [name]Lucifer[/name], he just decided to go for it. [name]Lucifer[/name] is actually quite pleased with his name and as I said, he gets an equal amount of “What were you thinking” and “Well that’s very brave” and while he’s not old enough for jobs, teachers tend to be the ones most likely to question his name but then he started going by [name]Luc[/name] in class and it cleared it up someone. Whenever any one asks, he just calmly explains the reason why he was named that. As for [name]Alastair[/name], that’s a heritage thing. he loved the sound and the Scottish history.

On another note, he has a Thanatos (just born and people think it’s very cool and seem not to care about the “embodiment of death in Greek myth” thing) and a little daughter [name]Lilith[/name] [name]Pandora[/name] (and again, no one has one little bit of a problem with either of those names) It’s really only [name]Lucifer[/name]'s name that bothers anybody, which makes no sense considering the sibling names. Why are people okay with Thanatos, [name]Lilith[/name], and [name]Pandora[/name] but not [name]Lucifer[/name]?

[name]Ah[/name], I thought it might have had something to do with Aleister Crowley.

I think it’s because [name]Lucifer[/name] is way more well known in the U.s. than the others. Honestly, I think of the jewelry store before I think of the box ([name]Pandora[/name]). As for [name]Lilith[/name] and Thantos, I have no idea who they are or what bad connotations are associated with them.

Dantea, I don’t think many people really know much about the history or mythologies of some of the other names you mentioned, except for maybe [name]Pandora[/name], who wasn’t really anything except insatiably curious and disobedient, if I remember her story correctly, and whose name would probably be on par with [name]Eve[/name] if one were looking for negatives.

On the other hand, [name]Lucifer[/name] is often synonymous with Satan, and even in secular pop-culture has a hugely negative connotation. (Which also taints names such as [name]Nicholas[/name], [name]Damian[/name], and [name]Rosemary[/name] with guilt by association, thank you Hollywood.) [name]Even[/name] people who don’t have true religious reasons for not liking or approving of the name may have superstitious ones because they have seen so many horror movies about the devil.

For people who don’t avoid names like [name]Pandora[/name] or [name]Persephone[/name] for religious purposes, I think they don’t have problems with the majority of those names because many of them are considered literary and are widely used for other purposes; i.e., space-shuttle names, constellations, planets, Internet radio stations, etc. None of them have a hugely negative connotation and have lost their mythological one for a lot of people over the years.

Hahaha, well while I can’t say I would condone that choice for a child, I can absoultely picture a cat named [name]Lucifer[/name]… The sound and meaning is admittably desirable, but it would be much easier for a pet to pull it off and not be judged by negative associations.

With the right personality to match (you all know what I mean, those terribly naughty kitties that destroy everything and are still somehow sooo lovable) I am easily picturing a bratty little kitten nn [name]Lucy[/name]! =]

I don’t think [name]Lucifer[/name] is a suitable name. It’s sort of like naming your child [name]Jezebel[/name], nice sound, but the connotation is just awful. As a religious person, I find it appalling, but if you have no ties to religion and really like it, it is not my place to tell you otherwise. Use it if you love it, but be prepared for a lifetime of criticism. Some say that helps build character.

As someone who is against the use of [name]Lucifer[/name], I also have issues with [name]Lilith[/name] and Thanatos as well, I can’t fathom why anyone would choose such names for their child. I don’t know much about [name]Pandora[/name] other than the whole box incident, and I wouldn’t use it either.

Well the thing with [name]Pandora[/name] is she was given a task by the gods and failed. She is the one who released all evil onto the world. It’s not really like [name]Eve[/name], who doomed herself and cursed woman kind, but [name]Pandora[/name] literally released everything evil into the world.

And I’m glad to see you aren’t a hypocrite when it comes to the “evil” names. At least you dislike them all :stuck_out_tongue:

I love meaning and the sound of the name. But in the end, I just can’t see it being something people can get over. Certainly those closest to the child would associate the name with him instead of Satan as time went on, but the sheer number of people any one person meets/comes into contact with/introduces themselves to throughout their life would make this name something of a nightmare.
Of course, as dantea mentioned in one of her posts, if they’re not living in a very religious community, a lot of people likely will think its brave choice and a great name. But most times they stepped out of their community or group, I think it would get far more trouble than its worth.
And while I really like the nickname [name]Luc[/name] option, and it provides something of a way to get around the resume issues later in life, on all official documents it would still say [name]Lucifer[/name], and I wouldn’t want a child to feel like they had to hide their name (ie go by [name]Luc[/name] to be even given a callback on an interview).
However, in the end, I still think I’d almost rather see a [name]Lucifer[/name] than another butchered spelling of a name that ends in -ayden

Ohhhkay. I understand that now…that makes me wonder why the jewelry store named themselves [name]Pandora[/name]…

Haha, yeah. I’m big on meanings and deep connotations. I view names as what you’re referring to your child as, so if you’re naming him [name]Lucifer[/name], that’s what you’re calling him…[name]Lucifer[/name], and the deeper meaning behind it; Satan. It’s part of the reason why I don’t like the idea of naming children after people.

I don’t know why the jewelry store (or radio) named themselves that either. To me, naming a daughter [name]Pandora[/name] is like saying she’s so incompetent she can’t follow the simplest orders.

And do agree about meanings. The meaning of [name]Lucifer[/name] is quiet lovely, and while the mythology behind [name]Lucifer[/name] isn’t mine, I wouldn’t use it. It does work fine in his neighborhood as most people there aren’t religious. [name]Lucifer[/name] is only just old enough to work and he’s been working as a volunteer at a local art gallery.

I am putting [name]Eve[/name] on the same level as [name]Pandora[/name] because she also had just one rule to follow and broke it, but she didn’t really release all the evil (and [name]Adam[/name] is the one who really blew it). I never really looked at [name]Pandora[/name] as being evil though, or incompetent. [name]Just[/name] really young and really human.

I also don’t really like the idea of using names of deities from any belief system (because whether or not I follow a system, I still believe that it means something and I believe in supernatural reality, if that makes sense?), but I don’t know if there are any edicts against it, and many people are okay with it and some beliefs encourage it. From a [name]Christian[/name] perspective, in the New Testament, one of the apostles who is frequently mentioned is even named [name]Apollos[/name]. The only name that was really forbidden was the name of God if I remember correctly.

I’m a very religious person, so that name is an absolute no go for me.Similarly, i couldn’t ever use the names [name]Delilah[/name] and [name]Jezebelle[/name] both of which i love. [name]Lucifer[/name] might be a nice name in and of itself and i really do like the “light bearer” meaning. I just don’t think i could ever get past the association with satan though. [name]Even[/name] if i could get past that association, i know others wouldn’t be able to and that would probably be a huge source of discomfort for my child in the future.
However, i really like the previously suggested name of [name]Lucius[/name] and i adore [name]Lucas[/name].

It would be more acceptable as a middle name than a first, but I would suggest not using it at all. It’s the equivalent of using other names with negative connotations such as [name]Adolf[/name] or Stalin.

I’ve got to say that there’s a difference between Hades and Lucifer, bdcause Hades is one if my favorite Greek gods and I hate it when people refer to him as the devil. There’s also a difference between Pandora and Lucifer. Pandora was not an evil person in the myths just a too curious girl who was basically manipulated into messing with things she shouldn’t have messed with.

Myth rant over, According to my Sunday school teacher Lucifer means morning star and is mentioned twicde in the Bible. Once it is referringbto Satan but the other time it refers to Jesus. However I still don’t think I’d ever name a kid that, because whether it actuwlly refers to him or not in people’s minds it will always mean the devil.

As an alternative I would suggest Lucian which has a similar sound and meaning but is less likely to cause people to accuse you of being a Satanist.

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is interesting. I am religious, but I’ve still pondered it.

I am aware it is loaded, but it is multifaceted. In Jewish belief (I am Jewish) [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] was [name_m]Adam[/name_m]'s first wife, but she would not be subservient to him. She was replaced with more compliant - though perhaps more gullible - [name_f]Eve[/name_f]. And now she is considered to be a demon, though she didn’t do anything very evil until sent away. [name_f]Eve[/name_f]'s name means ‘life’ and [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]'s name means, not evil or death, but ‘night’ - perhaps symbolic of her exile or of the mysteries formed in darkness. Not life’s exact opposite, but definitely not very easy-going.

I’m not sure I’d ever use [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] - and I definitely wouldn’t use [name_f]Delilah[/name_f] or [name_f]Jezebel[/name_f] - but I can see some of it’s draw. As a middle name, perhaps. Maybe I’m weird.
