The name I am currently in love with is [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. But I’ve always heard that a child with this name would get a lot of bullying because it’s so close to “lunatic”.
[name_f]Do[/name_f] you guys really think it’s that big of a deal? Kids can find any reason to make jokes, but would a child named [name_f]Luna[/name_f] be an easy target?
I am also in love with [name_f]Violet[/name_f], which happens to look a lot like “violent”. So if I were ever to use them together I would have a violent lunatic! This is such an odd predicament!
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is so lovely but sadly I have to split them up for this reason.
I really love [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I think it’s a lot more connected to the moon and stars (gorgeous imagery) than to ‘lunatic’ or ‘loony’. I don’t think I’ve ever actually heard those words spoken in my life! (Not counting books or movies here). Almost any name you love you will start to double guess and try to invade the mind of a 9-year-old, but to be honest, I don’t think kids are really all that cruel! I have a very uncommon name and I was never teased for it (I may have been teased for other things, but never for my name). I don’t think a kid in say 5 years (assuming your child was born today) would even know the word lunatic! I think [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is perfect and gorgeous.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - I adore it. I think of the purple flowers WELL before ‘violent’ even crosses my mind. In fact, the word ‘violent’ now looks purple to me
I think [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f] would be amazing sister names! I would swoon if I came across it in a sibset.
Best of luck!
I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f]! It’s even in my signature. Unfortunately, I would never be able to convince my other half to use this. (I am an extreme [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] nerd, and he is fully aware of this) I hope you do use it!
I love the name [name_f]Luna[/name_f] but I think in this day and age the [name_f]Luna[/name_f] Lovegood from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association has severely diminished any stereotypes against the name.
This is what I think of and not looney.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] will get teased no more than [name_f]Gina[/name_f] (add ‘va’ to the start of the name or alter the pronunciation of [name_f]Gina[/name_f]) or [name_f]Virginia[/name_f] (-the ‘ia’)
Kids will tease your kid no matter what… It is a part of life we all deal with it and more importantly have all survived.
The name may make your kid an easier target but no less of a target without the name.
I think the Violent Lunatic association is quite funny but also something I would never have thought of as [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is such a familiar and common name nowadays.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is a lovely name stop worrying as much.
If it makes you feel any better [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] Hungtington-Whiteley got teased both for her double barrelled last name and for being tall and less developed than the other girls.
The best of us go through it
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] is beautiful. To be honest, you could find any name and find something kids could make fun of. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if the kid’s name is [name_m]Tim[/name_m], they’re gonna find something mean to call him. If you love [name_f]Luna[/name_f], do it! Most [name_f]Luna[/name_f]'s I know love their name.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is gorgeous, and besides, the kids at school will only see [name_f]Luna[/name_f] V. unless she tells them what her middle is. If she’s the only [name_f]Luna[/name_f], she probably will only be known by [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. [name_f]Lu[/name_f] is also a darling nickname.
You can nit pick any name and find something that reflects negatively on it, so I wouldn’t worry. We called our cat [name_f]Luna[/name_f], and we do call her Looney, but that’s because she IS looney!
Let me try to assure you. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is one of my nickname and I got ALL compliments on it. I love [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is very pretty.
“Kids will tease your kid no matter what… It is a part of life we all deal with it and more importantly have all survived.”
Sorry, I just don’t agree. Kids are mean, [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is an easy target, and it is one thing to be teased, another thing to have your NAME teased. [name_m]How[/name_m] you feel about your name is harder to get over. And this name makes a very easy target. There are LOTS of names that are not one step away from a common slur like Looney. By 7th or 8th grade every naughty boy in your DD’s school is going to have Looney on the tip of his tongue.
I also have an unusual name but that is way different from having an easily targeted name. Furthermore, it’s one thing to have [name_f]Luna[/name_f] as a nickname and quite another to be using it with only [name_f]Lu[/name_f] as a legit nickname.
My suggestion is to use this as a middle name if you will be in the USA.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] is beautiful. It’s Russian word for moon so it has romantic, nature vibes for me. I’d never associate it with lunatic, by the way, it’s a safe enough name.
I love the sound and meaning of the name too much to take it off my list.
I am glad most of you had similar thoughts!
The [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connection doesn’t bother me at all. I loved [name_f]Luna[/name_f]'s character and wouldn’t mind people associating the name with that.
