Thoughts on ‘Lurayna’

Pronounce Loo-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-na. Here is the story…

I am a total sucker for vintage names. My husband has left the naming up to me other than his one request that we have a child with the name [name_u]Ray[/name_u] (his great grandpas name). I began to grow fond the name [name_f]Rayna[/name_f] but it was just missing something. After remembering an elderly woman named ‘[name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]’ I began to ponder ‘Lorayna.’ This name is lovely [name_f]IMO[/name_f], but I love the unique [name_f]Lu[/name_f] as in [name_f]Luella[/name_f] (a name I have loved very much for quite sometime now). So my mind birthed the name ‘Lurayna’ <3 Honestly, I don’t like the way it looks written but the sound grew on me. Also, I worry that it may seem too made up (which is a pet peeve of mine since I love vintage names) However, i did some online snooping and found that it is an old but very uncommon name.

So basically, I just wanted to know other opinions on this name!

I couldn’t find anything on Lurayna, and you probably won’t get much support on this sight for made up names but I can appreciate your meaning and the sounds you like in this name. I like [name_f]Luella[/name_f] and [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f], you could always add a middle name for honor too.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Ray[/name_u]
[name_f]Laura[/name_f]
or just [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] is simple and beautiful.

Good luck!

I think it sounds pretty, and I want to love it because of the thought and meaning you put into it, but it just seems pretty made up and pieced together to me. It doesn’t really flow when it’s written down. And I’m not sure if this is only a problem in my head, but I feel like people will smush the pronunciation; it may end up more like ler-ay-na and lose that Loo sound at the beginning anyway. Maybe you would consider naming her [name_f]Lorena[/name_f] (a variant of [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f]) and nicknaming her [name_u]Ray[/name_u]? It still works out sound-wise.

[name_f]Luella[/name_f] could then be a sibling name possibly, since they’re not overly similar.

What about something like [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]?
Lurayna isn’t the worst, but the spelling looks really made up. Would you consider Luraina? It looks a bit more traditional to me. Though the pronunciation bothers me too, I feel like people would call her Lorraina/[name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] a lot.

I prefer simplifying the spelling, [name_f]Lorena[/name_f], like a previous poster said. To me, the difference in pronunciation between “[name_f]Lu[/name_f]-rena” and “Lo-rena” when said outloud is hard to distinguish. There are many nicknames you could use with [name_f]Lorena[/name_f]: Lo, [name_f]Lori[/name_f], [name_f]Rena[/name_f], and [name_u]Ray[/name_u]. If you love the nickname [name_f]Lu[/name_f], I think [name_f]Luella[/name_f] is a beautiful name.

Other ideas with nn [name_f]Lu[/name_f]

[name_f]Lucia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lucy[/name_f]/[name_f]Lucie[/name_f]
[name_f]Luann[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]

Other names for nn [name_u]Ray[/name_u]
[name_f]Rayna[/name_f]
[name_f]Raia[/name_f]
[name_f]Rachel[/name_f]
[name_u]Raven[/name_u]

Its wonderful that you’re really thinking outside the box on this!

Unfortunately I agree with the above posters - I dont think you’ll get the distinction you’re looking for with this name. When I first saw it I heard it as “lur-aina” with lur as in lurch. Sorry, I really appreciate the effort you’ve put in but I think you may need to keep trying.
Best of luck!

I’m afraid the spelling confused me for a couple seconds. I would also say it lur-ayna at first and it’s not as pretty and lyrical as loo-rayna. I’m not usually a fan of double names but I wonder if [name_u]Lou[/name_u] [name_f]Rayna[/name_f] or [name_u]Lou[/name_u]-[name_f]Rayna[/name_f] might appeal? I also like [name_f]Lorena[/name_f] but I’d say it lore-ayna or lore-enna so it doesn’t really sound like how you want it.

As lots of previous posters mentioned it reminds me of [name_f]Lorena[/name_f], just looks a lot less streamlined. I think most people would hear [name_f]Lorena[/name_f] and pronounce it that way. I do think “[name_f]Lura[/name_f]” is quite pretty sounding and looking, though; it’s sort of dreamy, and this might be a bit random but it reminds me of the Irish-American lullaby/song “Tura [name_f]Lura[/name_f] Lural”. There’s also a similar name, [name_f]Lurline[/name_f], which is supposedly a variation of [name_f]Lorelei[/name_f] (I’m not necessarily suggesting you use it as I do think the -line ending could come across as dated - [name_f]Jolene[/name_f], [name_f]Marlene[/name_f], etc). [name_m]Just[/name_m] some thoughts to consider! As I believe others suggested I like the idea of calling her Lurayna as a short form of a first and middle name combination such as [name_f]Luella[/name_f] [name_f]Rayna[/name_f] (or [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f] [name_f]Rainey[/name_f], [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] Renelde, etc).

If it weren’t for the spelling I would like it, the pronunciation is quite pretty. I made up “Glorietta” so I understand falling in love with names you make up.
