[name_m]Hi[/name_m] all. Would love to know thoughts on baby name Mackenroe. (NN could be [name_u]Mack[/name_u] or Roe).
I know typically it’s spelt McEnroe, but I’m not a huge fan of the big M little c in a first name. Could I spell it Mackenroe instead and get the same pronunciation? And PS this is for a baby girl, and I know a lot of ppl don’t like boy names for girls, but my hubby and I actually really like it… is it too odd? Too much of an association with the tennis player?
I’ve never heard of this used as a name before besides the tennis player. Yes I definitely prefer Mackenroe as opposed to McEnroe because that spelling just reminds me of McDonalds lol. And yes I do think that you’d get the same pronunciations with both names, and I like how it’s a boy’s name on a girl. It sounds very strong, yet also girly because of [name_u]Mackenzie[/name_u]. The association is definitely there, but it’s not so popular like [name_f]Beyoncé[/name_f]. Overall, I think it’s great!
Yeah I think the tennis player isn’t a great association since he was such a drama queen.
It’s similar to [name_u]Makenzie[/name_u] or [name_f]Makayla[/name_f] in some aspects so it would probably be ok when people got used to it. It is hard to imagine a girl wanting the name Mackenroe, if I’m honest. Is Mackenroe going to be wishing she was an [name_f]Olivia[/name_f]? That would be my main concern.
It’s definitely interesting. It’s a little over the top for me but it’s spunky. I’d say Mackenroe and McEnroe differently though: MACK-en-row vs. mick-EN-row so I’m not sure which you’re after (I’m not familiar with the tennis player so idk how they say it). I don’t really like either spelling though. Mackenroe reminds me of Mackinac so I keep trying to read it like that.
I quite like it in theory, although I’ll confess I assumed this was for a boy when I saw the title. [name_u]Mack[/name_u] and [name_f]Roe[/name_f] would be such cool nicknames!
For me, the association with the tennis player is too strong, and as others have said he was an incredibly talented but fairly controversial player. But I think it’s usable and the spelling alteration and gender-switch helps to disassociate the name from the namesake a little.
Same. Though with Mackenroe, I instinctively want to stress the middle syllable . . . so I keep saying mack-EN-row.
I prefer the pronunciation of mick-EN-row, and think that makes a cool name for a girl. However, I also don’t like the McEnroe spelling. But, at the same time, I also don’t really like the Mackenroe spelling. For some reason it makes me think of fish, like hardcore. Maybe because of mackerel (a type of fish) and roe (a name for fish eggs).
Maybe a third spelling option? Micenroe (though this might get pronounced as Mice-en-row, and it’s still not as pretty visually) or Mikenro/Mikenroe.
I feel like the “Mik” grouping LOOKS visually appealing, and more like a name, while also intuitively getting that prettier mick-EN-row (or mi-KEN-row, which I think is even prettier).
Hopefully you find my train-of-thought musings helpful! I definitely think it’s an awesome, unique name for a girl, so I hope you’re able to find a spelling you love.
