Thoughts on Macsen?

Struggling big time on boys names and need help/thoughts/suggestions

I can’t shake [name_m]Macsen[/name_m] but am not 100%. It’s Welsh, which is our background but were living in Australia. Is it too different? And could you use [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] as a logical nn for [name_m]Macsen[/name_m]? Or too much of a stretch?

We have a daughter [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], so ideally want something slightly unusual to go along with that.

Other names on the list are:

[name_m]Archer[/name_m] (too popular?)
[name_m]Maxwell[/name_m]
[name_m]Macsen[/name_m] (could we use sonny as a nn?)
[name_u]Sonny[/name_u] (prefer as a nn but for what?)
[name_u]Noah[/name_u] (too popular?)
[name_m]Otto[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Bodhi[/name_m]
[name_m]Franklin[/name_m]/[name_u]Frankie[/name_u]

I like [name_m]Macsen[/name_m]. It’s got great historical credit while sounding modern and is definitely one of the more usable welsh names.

[name_u]Sonny[/name_u] would be fine and I wouldn’t go changing the spelling to mackson or such just to make sonny more obvious. I think it fits and works.

[name_m]Macsen[/name_m] and [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] are great siblings.

I know a [name_u]Hudson[/name_u] that goes by sonny but that doesn’t seem your style. Perhaps just use the advance search feature and go through all the son ending names to see if you can make the NN you love work.

I really like [name_m]Macsen[/name_m], especially if it has a meaning behind it for you. [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u] and [name_m]Macsen[/name_m] sounds great together.

[name_u]Sonny[/name_u] could be a nn, but I think [name_m]Mac[/name_m]/[name_m]Mack[/name_m] would be better.

From your list I think [name_m]Archer[/name_m] is a lovely name. I don’t think it’s getting to popular, but it’s more we’ll known than [name_m]Macsen[/name_m] if that’s what you’re looking for.

Madson/[name_f]Madsen[/name_f] is another possibility. And [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] [name_f]May[/name_f] be a more obvious nn.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps!

[name_m]Macsen[/name_m] is interesting - I quite like it. I think that while it’s different, its fairly intuitive to pronounce. [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] also makes sense as a middle

use [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] as a logical nn for [name_m]Macsen[/name_m]? Or too much of a stretch?

From your longer list, I also like [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] and [name_m]Franklin[/name_m]. I think you might even be able to use [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] for [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]

A couple of suggestions:

[name_u]Owen[/name_u]
[name_m]Brody[/name_m]
[name_u]Rory[/name_u]
[name_u]Tristan[/name_u]
[name_m]Samson[/name_m] ‘[name_u]Sonny[/name_u]’
[name_m]Orson[/name_m] ‘[name_u]Sonny[/name_u]’
[name_m]Jonah[/name_m]

The thing about [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] is he is your son so you could name him [name_m]Steve[/name_m] and call him [name_u]Sonny[/name_u]… But with a soft of -son name you’re golden and you can totally do that.

I know [name_m]Macsen[/name_m] is a legitimate name, but living in Australia be prepared for people to assume it’s made up and trendy. I think [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] could easily be a nickname for it though! I love [name_m]Otto[/name_m] and [name_u]Sonny[/name_u], not a fan of [name_u]Noah[/name_u] and [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] because I’ve seen so many toddler with those names.
[name_u]Sonny[/name_u] could be a nickname for [name_m]Wilson[/name_m], [name_m]Solomon[/name_m] and [name_m]Samson[/name_m]. [name_m]Even[/name_m] [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u], if you don’t mind a bit of a stretch.

I think that’s what I’m worried about. [name_m]Macsen[/name_m] sounds a bit like [name_m]Jackson[/name_m] etc, will it sound made up?!

So hard!

I second that. I’m unfamiliar with the name and that’s what I thought before I opened this thread. But then I read in your post that it’s Welsh and your background as well and that changed my perspective. That is exactly how you can respond to any remarks about it being “unusual,” “interesting” or what have you.

I agree with greyblue it’s quite easy to pronounce, though the opposite would be true for spelling it. Whilst [name_m]Macsen[/name_m] is certainly unique, it also feels modern and wouldn’t at all feel out of place in the Australian playground. I think [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] works well as a nickname. There’s definitely some connection there though I feel the nickname [name_u]Sonny[/name_u] could be used regardless of what you name him. He could also go by [name_u]Max[/name_u].

The other names on your list are also wonderful if you do change your mind about [name_m]Macsen[/name_m]. Some others you may like: Ffionn, [name_u]Dylan[/name_u], [name_m]Griffin[/name_m], [name_m]Grady[/name_m], [name_u]Sully[/name_u] and Samwell.
