Thoughts on Mardou

It’s the name of a character who is kind of ‘the one who got away’ romanticized woman from a [name_m]Jack[/name_m] [name_m]Kerouac[/name_m] novel.

With the similarities to [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], [name_f]Harlow[/name_f] & [name_f]Margo[/name_f]/[name_f]Margot[/name_f]/ect it feels usable to me.

What do you think? What would you think if you met a girl with this name? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce it?

Thank you

I pronounce it Mahr-doh.

It sounds more like it could be a last name to me, rather than a first name. (I feel the same about [name_u]Marlow[/name_u] and [name_f]Harlow[/name_f], if that means anything.) I probably wouldn’t think much if I met a girl with this name. I’ve never read the book it comes from, so I have no impressions of a character that might affect my opinion of this name. To be quite frank, I don’t think it’s all that pretty of a name.

I like it! I would intuitively say [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-due. It’s spunky, sophisticated, obscure, and intriguing - like a smart spy-girl name! It’s only downfall is that I can’t really think of a super cute NN:(

Thanks for the feedback!

This is how I would have pronounced it as well from first view (as an English speaking American) but like the sound of [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-doh better now that someone corrected me.

I like it. I would pronounce it [name_f]Mar[/name_f]-DOH, with a slight emphasis on the second syllable. [name_u]Mars[/name_u] or [name_f]Mimi[/name_f] might be cute nicknames, if you were so inclined.

I like it too, with the long ‘o’ as in [name_f]Angelou[/name_f]: MAHR-doh or mahr-DOH. It does remind me of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_f]Mardi[/name_f], and looks like those cute Dutch mush names [name_f]Malou[/name_f], Marlou, [name_f]Milou[/name_f], etc. You could call her [name_f]Doe[/name_f] for short.

For me personally it’s a bit nickname-y, surname-y and pseudo [name_m]French[/name_m], and I don’t know enough about the literary character, but as you said it’s definitely doable with people naming daughters [name_u]Marlowe[/name_u], [name_f]Meadow[/name_f], etc.

It’s not my usual style, but I am drawn to it. I actually haven’t even read the book since high school, so I should reread it before I seriously consider it! It might make an interesting middle that connects to books that I loved growing up. Thanks for all of your feedback! I just hope it doesn’t have a pretentious vibe or a made-up try hard vibe or a cheesy pseudo [name_m]French[/name_m] vibe!!

At first glance I assumed it to be a male nn for [name_m]Marmaduke[/name_m].

ohhh no!!!
