I just posted a similar thread in the girls forum, I’m just very interested to see what perceptions people have of my names. I tend to have a more unique taste than most people I’ve met, although less so here on Nameberry.
[name]Aditya[/name] - don’t think I like it. Doesn’t roll off the tongue.
[name]Alessandro[/name]/[name]Alessio[/name] - nice.
[name]Atlas[/name] - like it!
[name]Attila[/name] - Huge historical weight, negative connotations, and I don’t like the name enough to live with those.
[name]Augustus[/name] - like, though I prefer [name]August[/name].
[name]Boston[/name] - don’t like, but I think that’s cultural (I am Australian). It makes more sense to me for an American to use it.
Bremen - Hmm. Not sure.
[name]Beckham[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t hate, but I am not a fan of surname trend.
[name]Cain[/name] - My husband likes this, but I don’t particularly.
[name]Cedric[/name] - [name]Love[/name] it. Probably wouldn’t use it.
[name]Cyprian[/name] - This sounds not quite right to me, more adjective than noun.
[name]Diego[/name] - No, but I can see why you like it
[name]Deacon[/name] - Nup. Too surnamey.
[name]Ebenezer[/name] - LOOOOVE! And look, [name]Ebenezer[/name] Scrooge actually undergoes an amazing character transformation and becomes generous and kind so the Scrooge connotation doesn’t have to be negative. A kid who can learn and change? Excellent wish for him.
[name]Eelia[/name] - Prefer [name]Elias[/name].
[name]Eloi[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t really get this.
[name]Emilian[/name] - No, though I like [name]Emile[/name].
[name]Eoghan[/name] - [name]How[/name]'s this pronounced? Like [name]Ian[/name]? Because I’d just spell it [name]Ian[/name]. Which I like but don’t love.
[name]Errol[/name] - [name]Love[/name].
[name]Flavian[/name] - Like but not sure it’s masculine enough for me
[name]Florian[/name] - as above
[name]Geoffrey[/name] - My 4 year old suggested this, don’t know where she got it from! Not really into it.
[name]Grant[/name] - Nah.
[name]Hugh[/name] - Like, don’t love.
[name]Heath[/name] - No
[name]Iago[/name] - Oh yeah. Maybe. Though [name]Iago[/name] never redeems himself in [name]Othello[/name].
[name]Ilan[/name] - No.
[name]Jules[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name].
[name]Karsten[/name] - I don’t love K names
Kaspian - Prefer [name]Caspian[/name]
[name]Lucca[/name] - I like [name]Luca[/name]. Not sure about the two cs. Is it Loo-ka or [name]Luck[/name]-a or Loo-cha?
[name]Lucian[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this, can’t use it with our surname.
[name]Lachlan[/name] - I like this but it’s hugely popular in Australia where I live
[name]Madoc[/name] - Nah, too much like [name]Maddox[/name], which is too [name]Angelina[/name] Joelie for me.
[name]Matthias[/name] - Yeah, like.
[name]Maximillian[/name] - Mm. [name]Max[/name] is a bit overdone for my taste.
[name]Murray[/name] - Definitely like.
[name]Mathis[/name] - Yeah.
[name]Nehemiah[/name] - Sorta like. Could grow on me.
[name]Nils[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name].
[name]Nigel[/name] - [name]Don[/name]'t love.
[name]Piers[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name] written down but spoken aloud it doesn’t quite resonate for me (same with [name]Nils[/name]).
[name]Phineas[/name] - Nah, too [name]Julia[/name] [name]Roberts[/name]. Prefer [name]Finn[/name].
[name]Raleigh[/name] (not sure whether I prefer this on a girl or boy) - don’t like for either.
[name]Romney[/name] - Mm, love [name]Romany[/name] for a girl, not so big on this boy version.
[name]Rooney[/name] - Nah.
[name]Ritter[/name] - Nah.
[name]Severus[/name] - Yeah, I like this.
[name]Sascha[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]. One of my top names, though I have slight reservations because we have a girl baby [name]Sasha[/name] in our wider circle.
[name]Severin[/name] - Yeah.
[name]Tobias[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]. Husband doesn’t like [name]Toby[/name] at all. (I know, because I ask him every day.)
[name]Tomas[/name] - Like. Very popular though.
[name]Timaeus[/name] - A bit too Latin for me.
[name]Tiernan[/name] - Surnamey.
[name]Valerian[/name] - Nup, just associate with sleep drug.
[name]Vladimir[/name] - You’d have to have moxy, but this name is excellent in its way.
[name]York[/name] - yeah, don’t mind this.
[name]Yale[/name] - Not so much.
Thanks for the comments! I do live in the States, but am originally from Germany, so I want names that reflect my culture moreso than fit well into American society. I grew up with with a unique name for the US and it never really bothered me.
[name]Lucca[/name] is pronounced the same as [name]Luca[/name]. The reason I prefer the 2 ‘c’ spelling is that I first discovered the name in [name]Lucca[/name], [name]Italy[/name] and prefer to keep that connection.
I love:
[name]Alessandro[/name]/[name]Alessio[/name]
Bremen
[name]Cain[/name]
[name]Cedric[/name]
[name]Emilian[/name]
[name]Iago[/name]
Kaspian (prefer it with a C)
[name]Lucian[/name]
[name]Lachlan[/name]
[name]Matthias[/name]
[name]Nigel[/name]
[name]Severin[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name]
[name]Tiernan[/name]
My favorites from your list:
[name]Augustus[/name]
[name]Cedric[/name]
[name]Cyprian[/name]
[name]Ebenezer[/name]- My jaw dropped when I saw this, and then again when I realized I loved it. For some reason, the 5 year old bully in me thought of Ebesneezer, but if you have a nn like [name]Ben[/name] or even [name]Ezra[/name], that could be avoided.
[name]Geoffrey[/name]- I prefer this spelling.
[name]Heath[/name]
[name]Lucian[/name]- One of my favorite names is [name]Lucius[/name], so I love this.
[name]Matthias[/name]
[name]Nehemiah[/name]
[name]Nils[/name]- I’m Swedish, so I almost have to like this.
[name]Nigel[/name]
[name]Severus[/name]- Forget [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], this is just a flat-out awesome name.
[name]Tobias[/name]- Though I don’t love [name]Toby[/name] at all.
Overall, I really like your naming style. Good luck to you!
[name]Aditya[/name]- Very Feminine.
[name]Alessandro[/name]/[name]Alessio[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name] IT!!! Easily my two favorite names on your list. But very Italian- to me it would sound strange with a non-italian last name.
[name]Atlas[/name]- doomed to carry the world. Or a reference book.
[name]Attila[/name]- The hun.
[name]Augustus[/name]- I would stop at [name]August[/name].
[name]Boston[/name]- a city that, as a lifelong fan of the Yankees and Giants, I despise with every fiber of my being
Bremen- not bad, but not really that good either.
[name]Beckham[/name]- Bend it like. You might like [name]Beacan[/name] or [name]Becan[/name], pronounced the same but with an “n” at the end. It takes away the whole soccer association
[name]Cain[/name]- a HUGE biblical no-no. [name]Even[/name] if you aren’t religious (I’m not) it’s still very closely associated with the story.
[name]Cedric[/name]- the entertainer.
[name]Cyprian[/name]- seems like a really big name to have, but I don’t know why- it isn’t particularly long or loaded, but still seems like a lot.
[name]Diego[/name]- I like it a lot, but very ethnic. It would be strange to me to see a [name]Diego[/name] [name]Smith[/name] or something like that.
[name]Deacon[/name]- a guy at church who isn’t quite a priest.
[name]Ebenezer[/name]- Scrooge
[name]Eelia[/name]- feminine sounding
[name]Eloi[/name]- Hanoi.
[name]Emilian[/name]- I prefer [name]Emile[/name] or [name]Emilio[/name].
[name]Eoghan[/name]- MUCH easier when spelled [name]Owen[/name], but I like it a lot
[name]Errol[/name]- An owl in [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name].
[name]Flavian[/name]- I intensely dislike it for no apparent reason.
[name]Florian[/name]- See above.
[name]Geoffrey[/name]- I really like it. It’s kind of dated, but all the Jeffs or Geoffs I know are amazing people.
[name]Grant[/name]- [name]Ulysses[/name] S.
[name]Hugh[/name]- [name]Grant[/name].
[name]Heath[/name]- Ledger.
[name]Iago[/name]- Too literary.
[name]Ilan[/name]- I don’t really know what to make of it.
[name]Jules[/name]- [name]Love[/name] it! I think it would be a good idea to write [name]Julian[/name] or [name]Julius[/name] on the birth certificate, though, because of all the [name]Julias[/name] and Juliets called [name]Jules[/name].
[name]Karsten[/name]- I think It would be
Kaspian- like the sea. Personally I don’t think it’s that bad, but I remember being on a beach one time and there was a little boy named Kaspian. When his mother called his name out, my mother and sister burst out laughing. So not very wearable, I think.
[name]Lucca[/name]- I [name]Love[/name] it, but I prefer it spelled [name]Luca[/name]. I know it has a meaning for you, but since they’re pronounced the same I think it retains the connection
[name]Lucian[/name]- [name]Lucian[/name], [name]Lucius[/name], Lucifer- I don’t really like that whole family of names.
[name]Lachlan[/name]- Not bad, but not really my taste
[name]Madoc[/name]- would be confused with [name]Maddox[/name].
[name]Matthias[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name] it.
[name]Maximillian[/name]- It’s fine, but I don’t think anyone would ever call him by his full name. It would probably turn into [name]Max[/name], whether you want it to or not.
[name]Murray[/name]- Very last name-y, but I like it.
[name]Mathis[/name]- I really like it. I think it would be really easy to wear but still pretty unique.
[name]Nehemiah[/name]- I’ve heard of a couple of NEhemiahs lately, and I don’t quite know what to make of it. I think it’s okay, but a lot of name for my taste.
[name]Nils[/name]- [name]Nil[/name]. Like zero. Zilch. [name]Nada[/name]. That’s what I think when I see it.
[name]Nigel[/name]- Eh. It’s okay.
[name]Piers[/name]- Sounds like a spoiled rich kid.
[name]Phineas[/name]- This probably won’t be an issue with anyone other than me, but there was a man in the 19th century called [name]Phineas[/name] [name]Gage[/name] who had an accident where a 6 foot pole went straight through his brain and he survived for years afterward. I can’t think of anything else when I see it.
[name]Raleigh[/name] (not sure whether I prefer this on a girl or boy)- Very tied in my mind to the city in [name]North[/name] [name]Carolina[/name], and also very close to all the other -leigh, -ley, and -lie names that are currently ultra trendy (Like [name]Hailey[/name], [name]Bailey[/name], [name]Riley[/name], [name]Brylee[/name], etc.)
[name]Romney[/name]- Mitt [name]Romney[/name].
[name]Rooney[/name]- [name]Mickey[/name] [name]Rooney[/name].
[name]Ritter[/name]- Too last-namey.
[name]Severus[/name]- Snape, Snape, [name]Severus[/name] Snape (From [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name])
[name]Sascha[/name]- Too feminine
[name]Severin[/name]- See [name]Severus[/name]
[name]Tobias[/name]- I really like it, but I wouldn’t say I love it.
[name]Tomas[/name]- I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]TOMAS[/name]! I think it would be easier to spell it with an h, but it’s okay if you’re honoring a culture or person
[name]Timaeus[/name]- I prefer [name]Timothy[/name]. [name]Timaeus[/name] sounds more like a place to me than a person
[name]Tiernan[/name]- [name]LOVE[/name] it.
[name]Valerian[/name]- I kind of like it. Again, not love, but it’s a definite like.
[name]Vladimir[/name]- [name]Just[/name] makes me think of KGB officers or [name]Vladimir[/name] Putin. And also my incredibly intense, scary, Russian ballet teacher.
[name]York[/name]- I automatically want to put a “New” in front of it
[name]Yale[/name]- A school that is incredibly expensive and difficult to get into
