Thoughts on our top girl's names - what is your favourite from this list?

Hello all,

I had posted a while back with a list of potential baby names that my husband and I were considering. Unfortunately we lost that pregnancy, but I find myself expecting again. We’ve gone back to our old name list, but have added a couple of new names to the list this time. We don’t know yet if it’s a boy or girl, but for some reason our boy’s list has been MUCH easier to sort out. (We both love [name]James[/name] [name]Frederick[/name] for a boy - and both names are family names, so very happy with that). However, our girl’s list has been trickier. Here’s our top list (in no particular order). Please let me know what you think; ie. reactions, preferences, etc.
All of these names flow nicely with our last name, and each incorporates a meaningful family name as well. I don’t know how we will choose!

Girls names:

[name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - this seems to be my husband’s favourite; I’m just a little worried about the popularity of [name]Charlotte[/name], although it’s not necessarily a huge problem for me

[name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - I love the simplicity of the name [name]Grace[/name], and my husband likes it too. However, I know it’s popular as well.

[name]Jane[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] - I love the name [name]Jane[/name]…the only problem is that [name]James[/name] is our favourite boy’s name…

[name]Mary[/name] [name]Louise[/name] - we both like this combination, and could see using either name on its own or both paired together as a double-barreled first name

[name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Mary[/name] - a recent addition to our list

[name]Louise[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] - both are family names, and we both like the name [name]Louise[/name]

[name]Sally[/name] [name]Anne[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] - another recent addition. The name [name]Sally[/name] popped into my head, and my husband said he really like this name too. We’re just worried that it would be too ‘cutesy’ on an adult…although I’ve known adult Sallys who have carried the name. We could name her [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Anne[/name] and just call her [name]Sally[/name], I suppose. Thoughts on this one?

Thanks so much everyone! I would love some insight that would help in narrowing down the list.

I like [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] best, and I would call her [name]Charlie[/name]. I think it’s traditional and pretty while still being able to cary a spunkier nn.

[name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Jane[/name] are my favorites.

My deepest condolences and best wishes for a healthy, uneventful pregnancy!

My favorites from your list are [name]Mary[/name] [name]Louise[/name] and [name]Louise[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]! They are both sweetly old-fashioned, and work well for every age. I love [name]Jane[/name], as well, but I don’t think you could have a [name]Jane[/name] and a [name]James[/name]. [name]Charlotte[/name] and [name]Grace[/name] are lovely names, but are heard much more than [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Louise[/name]. I like [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Mary[/name], but the combination seems off a bit. The only one I don’t particularly care for is [name]Sally[/name] [name]Anne[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name].

As far as combos go, [name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is by far my favorite. It’s classic and sweet and charming. My favorite fn, however, would be [name]Charlotte[/name]–I think it’s perfect. I don’t love [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] (a bit on the long side for me), but it is very pretty. Would you consider something like [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Eliza[/name]?

Oh, I love your list. My only concern with [name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Mary[/name] is that maybe you couldn’t use the first name, [name]Mary[/name], in the future if you wanted to with a 2nd girl? I do love the combinatin though. My favorites are [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Jane[/name], [name]Mary[/name], and [name]Sally[/name] - not necessarily in that order though. It would be hard to rank them. My husband and I considered using the name [name]Sarah[/name] with the nickname [name]Sally[/name] with our newest baby girl.

Thank you so much for all these replies, everyone! It’s very helpful, and so interesting to hear how others react to these names. Hmmmm…I’m still feeling very torn!! But many of you have raised some good points - I agree that [name]Jane[/name] will probably be crossed off because of its similarity with [name]James[/name]. I find myself drawn to [name]Mary[/name] [name]Louise[/name] for its old-fashioned simplicity. And I personally love [name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] as well. I think I find [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] a little long too, as ashthedreamer stated. It’s very hard!

[name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Sally[/name] [name]Anne[/name] are my favorites. [name]Mary[/name] [name]Louise[/name]…rolls great, but I feel like I know 100 southern women named this, lol

I like all of your names! I have a [name]James[/name] myself! My favorites are [name]Mary[/name] and [name]Grace[/name] (which we would have used had my 3rd pregnancy been a girl). If you go with [name]Sally[/name] I’d use [name]Sarah[/name] as a given name and [name]Sally[/name] as a nickname.

Can I just say that [name]James[/name] is fabulous! I would also like to add that if [name]Charlotte[/name] did not clash horribly with my last name, we would be using it in a heartbeat. [name]Lottie[/name] is my preferred nn from [name]Charlotte[/name]. Sigh. [name]Don[/name]'t get me started or I will have horrible [name]Charlotte[/name] envy again!

[name]Sally[/name] [name]Anne[/name] is darling! If you love [name]Sally[/name] and are soso on [name]Sarah[/name], I’d use [name]Sally[/name] as a first name.

[name]Charlotte[/name] is pretty popular, but it is lovely and there are many nickname options to make it more her own. [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is nice.
Can I mix and match? I also like the sound of [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Louise[/name].

Your boys choice is wonderful. [name]Frederick[/name] is my mn pick too if I ever have a son. Family name here too and such a great old classic.

I love [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Louise[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]. I really love [name]Jane[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] too, but if you plan on having more children, you may regret not being able to use your favorite boys name later on, something to consider. My overall pick would hands down go to [name]Louise[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]. So beautiful, and I love [name]Louise[/name] in the FN spot!

[name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] is lovely!

Oh, I love the name [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Anne[/name]…possibly because my littlest sister (age 10) is my sweet, sunny [name]Sarah[/name] [name]Anne[/name]! What about [name]Mary[/name] [name]Grace[/name] and possibly a third name? I know a little [name]Meredith[/name] [name]Grace[/name] who is called MeriGrace, and I love the sound of that too. [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Louise[/name] is really nice too…with the additional plus of making a terribly cute [name]Maggie[/name] [name]Lou[/name] to her family only. :stuck_out_tongue: (In my family we have “family only” nicknames, and then we use our actual first names with everyone else.)

I love all these names! My favorites would be [name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] and [name]Mary[/name] [name]Louise[/name]. I’d probably choose [name]Mary[/name] just because like you said [name]Grace[/name] is a tad overused. But [name]Grace[/name] is still so sweet! [name]Charlotte[/name]'s great but it’s just so hot right now, and only getting hotter! [name]Mary[/name] would be my choice overall! GL!

Wow, thanks so much everyone! It’s nice to know that most of the names are well received anyway; and I think hearing all these opinions is helping to give me different angles to consider in narrowing down the list. [name]Louise[/name] [name]Margaret[/name] seems to be one that appeals to many of you. I like the suggestion of [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Louise[/name] as well, which a poster suggested - I think it flows better than [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name]. I’ll have to take these ideas to my husband and see what he thinks!

I love [name]Louise[/name]-So under used in my country and so lovely. [name]Louise[/name] margaret is my pick. (Or louise [name]Elizabeth[/name] even though it is not there)!
I like [name]Sally[/name] but don’t like [name]Sally[/name] [name]Anne[/name]. Would just do [name]Sally[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name].

My name is [name]Grace[/name] so I’m going to have to vote for [name]Grace[/name] [name]Elizabeth[/name] here  I also love [name]Louise[/name]! My sister’s name is [name]Louisa[/name], which I also think is lovely. Have you considered [name]Louisa[/name]? I love [name]Margaret[/name] [name]Louise[/name] and [name]Louise[/name] [name]Margaret[/name]. It’s beautiful either way!

[name]Beatrice[/name] [name]Mary[/name] is my favourite. I also like it reversed.

I like [name]Sally[/name] as a nickname but prefer [name]Sarah[/name] as a full name.

I find [name]Charlotte[/name] attractive but too trendy to use as a first name. I don’t think [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Mary[/name], or [name]Jane[/name] date the same way because they never really go away, but [name]Charlotte[/name] is on its big 70 year return, you know? I do like it though, maybe moved to the middle. [name]Mary[/name] [name]Charlotte[/name] is quite cute.

I don’t DISLIKE [name]Grace[/name] but I find it a rather sleepy pick. All the other virtue names are in less popular rotation.

What a beautiful, classic list you have made!

Any of these would be wonderful!

I’d love to see [name]Sally[/name] as nn for [name]Sarah[/name] resurrected. [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Mary[/name], [name]Louise[/name], and [name]Charlotte[/name] all see like nice names for you and a potential brother [name]James[/name].
