Yay or nay?
I think it’s very pretty. Pronounced “Fill-oh-mee-na” ? Is that correct? Nickname options?

Its pretty though I wouldn’t use it myself. There is more emphasis on the meen part though. fil-ə-MEEN-ə
Nicknames: [name]Mina[/name]/[name]Mena[/name]/Meni/[name]Mini[/name]/Filly
As an ex-Catholic-schoolgirl, [name]Philomena[/name] will always be the name of a dour, poker-faced nun. So that would be a big ‘no’, sorry!
[name]Love[/name] it, my great aunt was nn [name]Philly[/name] and I’ve always thought it was lovely - rare but not odd, the perfect gem.
I have a cousin named [name]Mary[/name] [name]Philomena[/name] who we call [name]Mary[/name] [name]Phil[/name]. I always thought it was cute and unique.
Not the hugest fan, but I think if I met a little girl with the name, I’d find it really darling. [name]Mena[/name]/[name]Mina[/name], [name]Pippa[/name], [name]Pippie[/name]/[name]Pippy[/name], Lo, [name]FiFi[/name], [name]Fia[/name], are all possible nicks.
Yay! I think it’s a great name. I’ve always loved [name]Wilhelmina[/name] nn [name]Minnie[/name]. I think [name]Minnie[/name] could work as a nn for [name]Philomena[/name] as well.
I like the [name]Mina[/name]/[name]Mena[/name] option, but the name as a whole makes me think of “filament” like in a light bulb.
[name]Love[/name] it! And so many nickname possibilities!
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Philomena[/name]! The saint connection is so special for me but I love the way the whole name sounds. I think [name]Minnie[/name] and [name]Mimi[/name]/ Meme are adorable NNs for it. [name]Philly[/name] is adorable though too, I had ever thougt of it before.
I would love to meet a little [name]Philomena[/name], how enchanting!
My mum’s best friend in school was called [name]Philomena[/name]. I quite like it
[name]Love[/name] [name]Philomena[/name]! Met a girl with this name. Her siblings were [name]Felicity[/name], [name]Claire[/name], [name]Edward[/name] ([name]Eddie[/name]), [name]Louis[/name], [name]Charles[/name] ([name]Charlie[/name]), [name]Joseph[/name] ([name]Joe[/name]), [name]Dominique[/name].
I’m intrigued by it, not sure how much I “like” it. I did recently hear the name [name]Philomela[/name], which I think I actually like better.
[name]Philomina[/name] is one of my very favorite names! I will most likely use it someday as it is the full name of my Dear Aunt [name]Minnie[/name]. (that was the nn she used). I also love [name]Mina[/name], [name]Meena[/name], and Philli.
I think it would be an intriguing choice. It’s different without being unrecognizable and it has quite a pretty sound and rhythm. [name]Minnie[/name] and [name]Pim[/name] would be cute nicknames.
It’s very pretty. Te only problem is, is the name of a much-beloved relatively recent saint who was determined by the Church not to exist. So-- please correct me if I’m wrong, Catholic berries-- since she was officially un-canonized, I think you’re not supposed to use it.
I adore the nickname [name]Pippa[/name] for [name]Philomena[/name]. Great name.
Whoah! I had no idea about that. Intriguing. (But sorry, bad Catholic here - I don’t know the answer.)
I am surprised that so many people find this pretty: the dominant sounds are ‘[name]Phil[/name]’ and ‘mean’, so I find it kind of masculine and unpleasant. Each to her own!
Sorry to dredge up an old thread; we’re looking at [name]Philomena[/name] for #3 (nn [name]Pim[/name]. [name]Pim[/name] and [name]Pip[/name]? I die) As far as I can tell from my research she wasn’t so much un-cannonized as technically not officially cannonized to begin with (same difference? eh, maybe). Doesn’t mean she isn’t a saint (one in heaven), just not part of the [name]Roman[/name] calendar. The whole situation is a murky one, right from the start. Except for some cryptic crypt notes and a few visions no one has any clue who she really was, yet she has a HUGE following!
I’m trying to get more info on this name-ban you suggest, [name]Blade[/name]. I’d really like to know more. She is an enigma, for sure.
Her unofficial-official feast day is Aug 9, but it could originally have been Sept 9; our due date.
